Importance of Benchmarking Information
Understanding what peers are doing and the current state of the
higher education facilities.
Survey Goals
● The goal of the survey is to provide a sense
of size and scale of college and university
facilities, along with a snapshot of what
institutions are prioritizing in terms of
planned changes to campus facilities.
● The survey will be administered next year
and beyond to provide institutions with
longitudinal data on how they compare to
peers.

2021 Campus Facilities Inventory
This is the second run of the Campus Facilities Inventory survey,
providing longitudinal insights on campus planning.
Information Collected
● Institutional Identification to cross reference
data with IPEDS database
● Respondent Information
● NASF by FICM Space Type
● Information on recent and planned changes
to campus facilities
● Effects of COVID-19 on campus planning
Key Insights
● Growth in student enrollment outpaced
growth in campus facilities since the last
iteration of the survey in 2007.
● Public schools tended to be larger in the
total amount of space on campus, but
private schools tended to offer more space
per in-person student.
● Institutions were much more likely to
adapt/update existing facilities rather than
build new ones.
● COVID was impacting planning for
workspace and instructional facilities.

2022 CFI Survey and Data Collection
Thirty-one institutions participated in the 2022 CFI survey from
twenty states and one Canadian province.
Survey Methodology
● Survey period was January 12 to
April 8, 2022
● 31 institutions participated
● Analysis of NASF data included data from
2021 participants (104 institutions total)
● Analysis of recent and planned changes was
a snapshot of 2022 respondents (31
institutions)

How We Cut the Data
Responses were analyzed by institutional size, sector, and campus
setting.
IPEDS Data
● The analysis calculated number of in-person
students using IPEDS data on the percent
of students engaged only in distance
learning and subtracting them from total
enrollment, since distance learners do not
use campus facilities.
● The survey data was cut by institution size
(in-person enrollment), sector (public,
private, 2-year, 4-year), and campus setting
(urban, suburban, town/rural).

High Level Findings

Key Findings - Current State
● Small private and public four-year schools provide
the most space per in-person student across sectors
and enrollment sizes.
● Private four year schools provide 45% more space
per in-person student as compared to public
four-year institutions.
● On average, four-year public and private schools
provide 277 NASF per in-person student.
Key Findings - Future Plans
● Similar to 2021, respondents are more likely to
update/adapt existing facilities rather than build
new ones.
● Updating campus infrastructure, making greater
use of outdoor space, and rethinking
administrative office facilities are key
considerations for responding institutions.
● There is an increased focus on decommissioning
facilities for respondents.
● COVID continues to affect planning for
workspace, instructional facilities, and HVAC
systems.
