Opinion: Tech City is destination of choice for ICT job seekers
1. Tech City destination of choice for ICT job seekers
The tech start-up scene is quickly becoming the preferential workplace for ICT job
seekers. According to a survey carried out by Silicon Milkroundabout earlier this year,
67% of respondents admitted that they would be persuaded to join a start-up company
for their next job.
LONDON’S TECHNOLOGY HUB, TECH CITY,
CONTINUES TO GATHER PACE AS MORE AND
MORE TECHNOLOGY JOB SEEKERS ARE DRAWN
TO THE IDEA OF WORKING IN A START-UP
ENVIRONMENT
Tech City, which encompasses Old Street, Shoreditch & Holborn, was established in
2010 as part of a £400 million government scheme to develop tech-led businesses
across the UK. Over the past three years the area has expanded at an exponential
rate and has become key in influencing the UK’s tech job market. Tech City News
reported that between March 2012 and March 2013, 15,000 new businesses set up
shop in Tech City. Organic initiatives such as crowd funding website Kickstarter &
Microsoft’s recent start-up programme have significantly aided Tech City’s success
as Britain aspires to remain home to Europe’s leading technology hub. This success
has created many attractive opportunities for the growing ICT talent pool across the
UK and Europe.
Technology clusters and a new digital landscape have a direct effect on today’s
evolving workplace. Fixed work hours, hierarchy and the corporate ladder are slowly
being replaced by flexibility, empowerment and engagement. Breaking tradition,
job seekers (especially in the ICT sphere) now put more emphasis on finding a good
cultural fit over factors such as a higher pay package when considering their next
career move. According to Silicon Milkroundabout, 72% of ICT specialists do not
expect or care about receiving more money in their next job, citing other factors
such as equity, job satisfaction, and learning opportunities as more attractive
considerations.
2. In a recent competition, Bridge Noble asked London’s Tech City start-up what makes
them unique. Answers included hack days, free beer and pizza and team trips
abroad. Clearly a new culture has be born out of the tech start-up scene, one that
transforms the office into a place that makes employees want to get out of bed for
on a cold London Monday morning.
Despite UK tech centers offering some of the best paid, stimulating and creative jobs
in the country, the UK has still a long way to go if it is to emulate the success of its
US counterpart, Silicon Valley. Over the past decade the USA has surpassed all other
nations by becoming the global leader in ICT. Silicon Valley, the original Tech hub,
is unrivalled when it comes to the speed and breadth of unveiling successful
technology. Silicon Valley are breeding a new kind of forward thinking ICT expert, a
feat that can be attributed to California’s non-corporate culture, experienced
existing players, and top technology schools, leaving the UK lagging behind.
More needs to be done if the UK is to be put on the map as a leading nation of
innovation and continue to attract top talent. ICT is an integral sector to our
economy and is one that must be nurtured. The British Government need to create
greater incentives to attract the talent and investors needed to drive innovation and
commercialization, bridge the current skill gap and re-establish our leadership
position. By supporting tech hubs across the country Britain will have the ability to
be at the forefront of global innovation and continue to drive economic growth.
