Life in the Industrial
Revolution
By: Brett Gendoes, Elliot Chambers, and
Nolan McDonald
New Industrial Powers
Emerge
Britain tries to protect its status as the leader of
the Industrial Revolution by instating strict rules
and regulations on the trading of ideas and
inventions
William Cockerill-British mechanic who opened
shops in Belgium to manufacture spinning and
weaving machines
Belgium becomes the second European nation
- Britain was the first - to industrialize
New Industrial Powers
Emerge

Countries including the US, Germany, and
France had more raw materials and could
follow Belgium and Britain’s lead when it came
to industrializing
This abled them to industrialize quicker and
   more efficiently
New Industrial Powers
Emerge

The first American textile factory was built in
Pawtucket, Rhode Island
Germany became a world industrial power, as
did the United States
New Industrial Powers
Emerge
Many countries were not able to industrialize as
quickly because they lacked the will-power of
the government or the natural resources
Japan lacked many natural resources but
flourished and industrialized rapidly because of
the institution of a new government that
prioritized modernization and industrialization
New Industrial Powers
EmergeRevolution not only drastically
 The Industrial
changed the way things were made and how
factories worked, but also the way of life for
 many people
During the early years of the Industrial
Revolution, men, women, and children all
 worked in dangerous and uncomfortable
 conditions in sweatshop-like factories
These conditions will better by the 1900s,
but during this time, the average workplace
    was extremely hazardous and dangerous
New Industrial Powers
Emerge
The Industrial Revolution also helped narrow the
gap between the rich and the poor when it
came to possessions
The Revolution’s factories made everything a
lot cheaper to make, which allowed the prices
of goods to plummet
This gave the poor people the ability to
   purchase more and nicer goods
New Industrial Powers
Emerge

Wealthy Western nations were able to trade
and get better deals because of their
industrialization and their economic and
technological advantages
This caused Western nations to dominate the
trade, and the world, more than they ever had
Technology Sparks
Industrial Growth
The Industrial Revolution was a time of
innovation and the improving of old inventions
Steel productions and use soars because of
Henry Bessemer’s new way of making steel
His new way makes steel easier to make,
cheaper to make, stronger, and more
   efficient
Technology Sparks
Industrial Growth
Many scientific and chemistry inventions and
innovations were made during the Industrial
Revolution
Alfred Nobel invents the explosive dynamite,
and it is immediately used in construction and
warfare
This earned Nobel a large fortune
   Funded the famous Nobel Prize
Technology Sparks
Industrial Growth
Electricity power soon overtakes steam power
English chemist Michael Faraday creates the
“dynamo” or a machine that generates
electricity
   Today’s generators and transformers all
have a basis in Faraday’s innovative designs
Thomas Edison creates the first ever lightbulb
Technology Sparks
Industrial Growth
The factory system is further improved upon
with the creation of interchangeable parts
Parts of a system that can be used in place
   of another part
Another new method of factory production
comes around in assembly lines
Having one worker specialize in one specific
part of a job and doing the same part over
   and over
Transportation and
Communication
Advances
Railroads and steam-powered boats are used
throughout the Industrial Revolution
When a gasoline-powered internal combustion
engine is created, the first models of the
automobile emerge
Henry Ford’s car makes America a leading
power in the automobile industry
Transportation and
Communication
Advances
Orville and Wilbur Wright create the first airplane
    Kitty Hawk, NC
Could only stay in the air for only a few
    seconds
Began the “air stage” of the Industrial
Revolution
Transportation and
Communication
Advances

Samuel F. B. Morse creates the telegraph
