Power of Social Media is Getting Things Done; “Social media is technology used to engage three or more people. Social learning is participating with others to make sense of new ideas. What’s new is how powerfully they work together.”- Marcia Conner, The New Social Learning; Not an add on or blended in addition to what you already are doing (like education & workplace training). What is Open Source: Drupal is an open source content management framework that's easy to modify and has a user base of hundreds of thousands of people. The very active community has an estimated 240,000 websites powered by Drupal 6. Open Atrium is one, being built on Drupal 6 core. Drupal 7 was released in January of 2011, and upgrading Open Atrium to Drupal 7 is a priority for us in the coming months.A team collaboration tool with open source hotness:ALAIN: There are no plans/need to have OA on Drupal 7. We need to remove that comment.\\.
How organizations are evolving to meet the challenges of rapid change, complexity and connectivity (always on) and NetworksWork Teams need to get things done. An effective collaborative work team integrates work and learning while focused on delivering products or services. Open communications, keeping processes as simple as possible, releasing and testing often – all make sense in an increasingly complex workplace.Learning Networks, on the other hand, have to be personal or they won’t get used. However, they have a great value to the organization as a whole by being on the periphery and embracing chaos. Another benefit of online, open personal learning networks is to promote critical thinking.Communities of Practice are an in-between place – lightly structured with general goals and open to opportunities. Successful online communities are run with a gentle hand.To deal with increasing complexity, organizations need to support emergent work practices, in addition to their training efforts. They must support collaboration, communication, synthesis, pattern recognition and creative tension, all within a trusting environment in order to be effective. One method of supporting emergent work is the fostering of communities of practice (CoP).So if you wonder what all the hype over web social media is about, in my mind it’s the potential to support emergent work practices. Twitter, blogs, wikis and social networks are tools for communities of practice. They can be used effectively or not. How these tools get used is itself an emergent practice, but if you don’t practice, nothing will emerge.
