2. Unit 7 Completion Assignments In the first assignment, you will be learning about an Arabic form of poetry called the Ghazal. You will look at two Ghazal poems. The first will have notes for you explaining the poem. The second poem is the one that you will use in the first completion assignment. You will pick out your favorite couplet – you will write a three sentence explanation of the following posting you response to our class “Ghazal blog”. Why you like the couplet you have chosen. What you think it means. Why you think it is important to understanding the rest of the poem.
3. Unit 7 Completion Assignments In the next completion assignment, you will be studying lyric poetry. You will be using the TPCASTT method to analyze a lyric poem in this assignment. The poem that you will be analyzing is ‘The Guitar”. Make sure that you read the background information – gypsy population – flamenco music.

5. Unit 7 completion assignments Title - “the guitar” is a poem about music. Paraphrase – rewrite the poem in your own words. Connotation – this is where you analyze the figures of speech and sound effects of the poem. Alliteration – repetition of consonant sounds (w). Attitude – tone – the attitude of the speaker toward the subject of the poem -gloomy and dark. Shift – is there a change in time, tone, speaker Title – rethink the title – did your analysis change? Theme – the general insight into life conveyed by the author through his/her work.
6. Unit 7 Completion assignments In the last completion assignment, you will take a short assessment. The cry of the guitar begins at dawn – refer back to line 4. The guitar continues to weep or cry because no one seems to be capable of stopping the guitar from crying. The denotation (dictionary definition) of the word monotonous is that it remains the same – it does not vary. In lines 20 – 21 you will see what the guitar cries for – things that are far off. Hot southern sands yearning for white camellias (a type of flower). It mourns the arrow without target – no purpose Heart wounded by five swords – swords is a metaphor (comparison) for five fingers
7. Unit 7 completion assignments The overall mood of the poem could be described as not very happy. By using repetition of words, the author creates a rhythm in the poem. This poem is considered to be a free verse poem because it does not have any specific meter or rhyme scheme.
