22. Why Toyota Should Go Open Source
The software in Toyota's "black boxes" is like having a car with its hood
welded shut. Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst calls for more openness in autos

Open source is about leveraging the power of participation to solve complex problems such as manufacturing,
health care, and government. This advantage is why numerous 21st century successes—from Google (GOOG) to
Facebook to Wikipedia—are all based on open-source software and principles. It may also be how Toyota

can improve its vehicles and ultimately regain consumer trust. 2
23. Open Innovation's Challenge:
Letting Go Is Hard To Do
Companies want R&D help from outsiders, but granting them authority is another
matter
Open-source software provides an important example of how
companies can leverage external sources of innovation. In practice,
however, big high-tech companies often have a difficult time collaborating and
sharing control.
While most people have heard of Linux, an open-source community founded by
individual programmers, increasingly companies are sponsoring their own
communities and supplying development resources, infrastructure, and initial
technology in the hope of attracting individuals and other businesses to help
them create products and services for potential users. Sponsors also set rules
for developing and using cooperatively developed software, to align the
community to corporate objectives and avoid time-consuming
negotiations inherent in shared governance.
