8. Change Video that highlights many of the communications and technology changes; many employees may not have access to this at work, so here’s the link to view at home if you so choose: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ILQrUrEWe8
13. Current way the public is presented with news; the top section includes news releases from OPA that cover some agencies while the bottom half presents department news releases. This is not helpful or user friendly for our public
14. NewsWire: Latest News Solution: Integrated news releases from all departments presented in one list
19. Left: Web page with info about immunization shots; right page news release about same info on the left. Why duplicate work?
20. NewsWire: Latest News Solution: integrate web updates and existing content with news releases on the NewsWire
21. NewsWire: Latest News We already follow this model of web updates and news releases during emergencies; now making it the day-to-day practice of publishing news
22.
23. NewsWire: Events You can use the same calendar system as the Public Meetings Calendar to setup an agency calendar; DIT can then provide a countywide calendar drawing upon all entries. Contact wwwdev to setup a calendar
24. NewsWire: Event Map NewsWire will include an Event Map that features selected events from which people can look visually on a map and find events nearby. Only selected events will be manually entered, not all county events.

27. NewsWire: News Feeds RSS news feeds will be one way we share information with people who choose this method. Agencies are now required to have RSS feeds for their news sections. You may choose to use RSS for your whole agency, by program or topic area, etc. While it’s ideal to constantly update news feeds, it’s recognized that not all topics will feature updates all of the time.
29. NewsWire: News Feeds RSS news feeds broken down by departments, topics and locations. OPA will manage countywide topic and location RSS feeds (and a few department feeds), while departments will manage their own. OPA editors will then add department news items to related RSS feeds such “Environment” or by locations such as “Reston.”
30. NewsWire: E-mail E-mail remains the No. 1 reason why people access the Internet. While some of the demographics are changing and younger people are relying more heavily on texting, E-mail is a critical tool people can choose to access our information.
31. NewsWire: E-mail The Weekly Agenda E-mail will continue as part of countywide E-mail efforts. However, our E-mail options will expand…
32. NewsWire: E-mail Daily Digest of NewsWire updates E-mailed to subscribers between 3 and 4 p.m. Weekly Digest of NewsWire updates E-mailed each Wednesday
33. NewsWire: E-mail Weekender E-mail highlighting upcoming events sponsored by county agencies; E-mailed on Thursdays in advance of the weekend so our residents can plan accordingly
35. NewsWire: Mobile 93 percent of Americans have a cell phone. Mobile devices will be the primary way people access the Internet; no longer will people be tethered to desks to surf the Web. We need to ensure our place on this platform so people can access us on the go and/or as the primary way they receive county information.
37. NewsWire: Mobile Introduce news by texts for people who want to receive their information this way; large numbers of people rely on texting; we can share updates such as “Electronics Recycling Sunday, I-66 Transfer Station in Fairfax, 10-3”
38. NewsWire: Mobile Twitter now provides a “Fast Follow” option that does not require someone to sign up through Twitter.com, but rather text 40404 with “follow @fairfaxcounty” and people will receive our tweets as text messages
39. NewsWire: Mobile DIT is working on a new mobile version of our website that will display properly on iPhones, Blackberries, Androids and other platforms
40. NewsWire: Mobile DIT is working on a countywide iPhone app. There are also plans for a county emergency information iPhone app. Visit Fairfax has an app that’s now available.
41. NewsWire: Ask Fairfax! Much like washingtonpost.com online chats, the NewsWire will now feature chats with county staff. This is a way for us to engage our community through online tools.
42. NewsWire: Ask Fairfax! We will host a variety of topics from all agencies, departments, offices, Board members and more. The examples above show the various ways the chat options can be used. The topic will be posted online and then the public will have a few days to submit questions. We will then have the guest(s) answer the questions live for 1 hour, during which time some live questions may be asked, too.
43. NewsWire: Social Voting Yet another way to engage our public so they can submit their ideas about a variety of topics that we seek feedback about. We used social voting as a pilot in March when the Board and VDOT held a snow summit after the February blizzards. We asked people to submit their ideas for snow removal and communications. 60+ ideas were submitted. Everyone then has a chance to vote ideas up or down; we received more than 1500 votes on those ideas for elected officials and staff to consider.
45. NewsWire: Social Voting We will launch a social voting channel about the ways people want to receive information, what kinds of information and more. Many agencies have asked about using this tool to help public outreach efforts. We hope to expand, but there are some budgetary issues involved that will be decided later.
46. NewsWire: Video Video efforts will be a key piece of the NewsWire, both on our YouTube channel and Cable Channel 16
47. NewsWire: Podcasts Podcasts will continue: News to Use, Health & Safety, Board of Supervisors Recap; Parks and libraries also produce podcasts
48. NewsWire: SlideShare SlideShare is another tool we’re using as the “YouTube for PowerPoints.” This allows us to publish presentations in a central location and to embed them within a webpage
49. NewsWire: Flickr One countywide account started in May; 98,000+ views of our pictures; remarkable return on investment. Send more pictures!
51. NewsWire: Social Media Facebook will continue as our primary social media platform. With nearly 5,000 fans for the county page (and hundreds more for agency pages), lively discussions and more, it’s an essential tool for us to share key highlights about county government news.
52. NewsWire: Social Media Twitter is our other dominant social media tool. Like Facebook, we’ve experienced consistent growth and success on this platform.
53. More Change Video that asks the question, “Is Social Media a Fad?” Many employees may not have access to this at work, so here’s the link to view at home if you so choose: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFZ0z5Fm-Ng

57. NewsWire: Evolution 1 2 3 News releases only… … News releases and web updates… News releases, web updates and social media updates all in one list
58. NewsWire: Objective 3 The list of updates and the various other tools all work together; info from the list appears in the tools; the tools can promote other tools, for example Facebook can feature an Ask Fairfax! chat
