Catriona Cannon Deputy Librarian & Keeper of Collections University of Oxford Christine Madsen Co-Founder & Chief Innovation Officer Athenaeum21 Good resource discovery tools are not simply about making research easier and faster, but about facilitating the creation, preservation and discovery of knowledge by enabling new modes of research, especially across disciplines. In 2014 the University of Oxford began a robust and unique program of activities to improve discovery of and access to its intellectual assets: garden, museum and library collections, open educational resources and research outputs and data. With over 100 libraries, five museums, botanic gardens and an arboretum at the University, Oxford has been working to find world-leading solutions for connecting students and researchers at Oxford (and abroad) with the collections that are available to them. The University also aimed to make its resources more findable by the wider community, to increase engagement with its world-class collections and research. A year-long research study revealed the nuances of why incoming researchers and students struggle to find relevant collections and found that simply providing better search tools across existing metadata will not improve the situation. Therefore, the University has set out to scope entirely new approaches discovery, exploring new tools and approaches to enable students and researchers at Oxford and abroad to understand the scope of collections held by the University and to find them quickly and efficiently. A current project seeks to create an innovative working prototype that balances users’ needs for cognitive maps against wide-ranging types, and robustness, of data.

Mediated vs. open service model, various programming and marketing approaches, and the space and staffing considerations will be discussed with pros and cons to provide a solid starting point for creating a makerspace. We will also share some findings from experimenting with 3D printing devices and equipment at University of Maryland, Baltimore.

While collections dashboards are often used as an external communications tool, they have additional applications for improving internal processes and assisting subject selectors. The result of a collaboration between a subject selector, data librarian, and collection development librarian, this presentation focuses on the identification of data sources, the process of parsing collection data by subject area, and practical visualizations to support evidence-based decision making in subject collection development. Of particular interest to attendees may be visualization techniques for linking multiple data sources, from acquisitions data to holdings data, publisher provided usage data and library collected user experience data. Using Tableau, the presenters have developed dashboard frameworks to support collections decision making.

This is a slightly modified version of a presentation made at the American Library Association 2010 Annual Conference in Washington DC, June 28, 2010. Cataloging information is presented as observations on one or more library resources, grouped into as many as four levels or Points Of View. Resource/description complexes can be linked together by one or more relationships into simple and complex structures that can then be explored or extracted and reordered for presentation.

Professional Forum: Eleanor Fink, American Art Collaborative, USA, Shane Richey, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, USA, Jeremy Tubbs, Indianapolis Museum of Art, USA, Rebecca Menendez, Autry Museum of the American West, USA, Cathryn Goodwin, Princeton University, USA Last year the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded a planning grant to the American Art Collaborative (AAC), a consortium of thirteen U.S. museums who have come together to learn about and implement LOD within their respective museums. Under the grant AAC developed a road map for the Initiative that will test LOD reconciliation issues, develop production and reconciliation tools, and result in the publication of American art holdings as LOD for researchers, educators, general public, aggregators such as DPLA, ResearchSpace, and digital application developers. The road map also includes publication of best practices and guidelines to share with the broader museum community. In September 2015, AAC member Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art received on behalf of AAC, an IMLS National leadership grant and plans for additional grants are underway. These grants are allowing AAC to convert data to LOD using the CIDOC CRM, link to the Getty Vocabularies as well as contribute missing names to enhance the vocabularies, and implement an API and reader compliant with the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) that will allow researchers to compare and contrast AAC LOD. Several open source tools including a link curation tool and IIIF/CRM translator will be developed and made available for other museums. AAC is developing its LOD under a federated model whereby each AAC member assumes responsibility for updating and maintaining its own data. The session will bring together representatives from large as well as small AAC partners to discuss the benefits of LOD, some of the lessons learned and challenging documentation issues AAC is facing. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. The development from theoretical concepts to real-world applications illustrates both the potential benefits and the challenges that come with integrating advanced technologies into everyday life. We Decided to Build a Prototype! • “LibStats” project • A small team of two people • We inventoried all data sources programmable through connecting to either a backend db or a vendor-provided API • Then we made a lot of charts and graphs. (PHP + Google Charts Library) • Then we showed them to the senior administration.
