1. CAFOD works in emergencies Haiti & Pakistan 2010

2. 12 January: Haiti In January 2010 a major earthquake hit Haiti, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale. This was the strongest earthquake that Haiti had experienced in more than 200 years. More than 200,000 people died and many more people lost their homes.

3. August: Pakistan In August 2010 Pakistan was hit by monsoon storms, bringing the worst rain for 80 years. Many people died and about 20 million people were affected. At one point an area larger than England was under water!

4. CAFOD supporters donated millions of pounds to help the people of Haiti and Pakistan. Thank you! A year after Haiti’s earthquake and six months after Pakistan’s floods what is happening now ?

5. First response In any emergency the first need is for clean water , food and shelter . People may also need medical help . This is how CAFOD partners in Haiti and Pakistan used the money donated by people in the first few days and weeks.

6. The last year has been really tough for people in Haiti. Thousands of people have had to live in tents during the monsoon season and through floods during the hurricane season. The picture shows people rebuilding their tent after heavy rain. What’s happening in Haiti now?

7. CAFOD’s partners are helping to make the camps better by building safe toilets and delivering gallons of water.

8. The next steps are to make new homes and help people earn money.

9. In Pakistan after the floods began CAFOD partners provided people with shelter kits (containing blankets and floor mats) and hygiene kits (containing soap, towels and cloths to filter water). They also provided food, medicine and clean water. What’s happening in Pakistan now?

10. People’s homes, crops, animals and businesses were destroyed or damaged along with the country’s roads, school and hospitals. Because so many people were affected, six months on people still need food, clean water, medicines and shelter.

11. Sher Ali’s family lost everything: “ Our house was washed away by the floods. We lost our maize and wheat crop. The flood washed away the chicken farm and the orchard [where I worked] and now I am without a job and money.” Sher Ali (14)

12. CAFOD partner, CRS, gave Sher Ali’s family an emergency kit. “With the kitchen utensils provided in the emergency kit we can now prepare our food and eat. The plastic sheet, water cooler and soap were the most important items. When it rained yesterday we had to use the plastic sheet to take cover and the cooler helps us store and keep our water clean. 13. There is still a lot of work to be done in Haiti and Pakistan but at CAFOD we stay with communities long term to help them rebuild after an emergency has happened. Photos: Caritas, CAFOD
