Welcome!! My name is Jay Odell. I am the VP of CRM Solutions for CRM Solutions for Blackbaud. I am joined onstage by my colleague, Anthony Tomaino, Sr. Prod Mgr for Raiser’s Edge NXT.
We are going to focus this session today on Raiser’s Edge NXT. We have another session tomorrow where we will go into more detail on RE7 enhancements we’ve made this year and our plan for a release in early 2015.
Before we get started, we’re going to have a little fun…
When we set out to build RE NXT, we spent a lot of time listening to questions you, our customers, had. Fortunately, we have a lot of loyal, passionate customers very willing to give us feedback!
Here are examples of what we heard
Make sure I don’t lose this piece of functionality – I really need batch or gift entry; someone else is very reliant on specific reports
Do I have to go through a migration again?
How do I get people to access information themselves? I spend so much time running queries and reports and giving them to people.
We created several guiding principles for how we built RE NXT (add messaging/words from Mktg team’s work below)
Mobile devices accounted for 55% of internet usage in January, 2014. It was the first time mobile devices surpasses PCs. The use of mobile devices to access the internet increased 67% over the last 12 months.
We wanted to build something that gave you access anytime, anywhere – mobile device in a coffee shop, tablet in the back of a car travelling to your next appointment, in the office, at home on the couch, etc. Every user has their preference for how they want to access information, and NXT will enable it.
You’ll hear us talk a lot about “being in the cloud.” How many of you use gmail? Facebook? You can access them anywhere…anytime. We want RE to be the same

We wanted to enable
Sending donor profiles with the click of a button. Sending a profile should be a link, not a report you have to run. Just like Anthony texted me a link to a constituent a few minutes ago
Development Officers actually enter in their key interactions with donors vs. asking the database administrator to do it because they don’t know how to use the system well
Enabling executives and development directors to access key information on their own. Instead of asking a DBA to run reports and analyze who to focus on, executives and Development Directors have the information they need at the fingertips and can access it on their own
The first thing we are doing to enable this, is RE NXT will be unlimited users. Anyone that you give access to can use the system…any time…any where.
We also wanted to enable full functionality on any device. So, I use Wells Fargo for my personal banking. Wells Fargo has a great web site and they have a nice mobile app. On the mobile app, I can take a picture and deposit a check, I can check my balances, and I can transfer funds. If I want to do more, I have to their web site on my computer – add my wife to account, change my address, open a new account.
We want to build Raiser’s Edge NXT so you get full functionality on your phone, tablet, or computer.
The second thing we did is we built a simple, beautiful user interface that anyone can use. You don’ t have to be an RE expert to use it.
We believe this will significantly cut down the time the primary RE users spend running reports and passing them around, entering data for other people.
…We wanted NXT to be more more than just a new interface…it will also provides insights and clear cut intelligence to those who need it – leveraging embedded analytics, such as wealth ratings or ask amounts AND built-in best practices to help you achieve better fundraising.
I heard a quote from a customer that really resonated with me. This customer told me “There is SO much good data in our Raiser’s Edge database. However, we have to work harder in order to be smarter and use this great data.” We want you to work less to be smarter and improve your fundraising results
Take the example from the role play Anthony and I did earlier – RE NXT told me there are three people who need my attention, and it suggested the action I should take with the yellow star. It also leveraged information from embedded analytics that are included with RE NXT, such as wealth
Anticipate what you will want to do, such as have a senior person make a personal call to a new high value donor; mark an action for the Development Director to assign them a solicitor)
We felt it was important to take a role-based approach with deep nonprofit expertise to the user interface. We wanted to focus on the jobs to be done. The person conducting high touch fundraising needs a different view into the application than the person doing data entry, which is different from the Development Director assigning solicitors and managing overall fundraising.

The initial version is focused on fundraisers, executives, and development directors.
And…we are very quickly going to expand the jobs and roles. Expect a new release every 1-2 months that expands the breadth of this new interface

Every constituent record in NXT is powered with analytics that actually target your best potential major gift candidates for you, screen their wealth profile, and recommend the dollar amount you should be asking them for; with the tools you need take that action provided right in NXT. I’ve talked to a lot of clients that are actually paying for these types of services from third parties, but with NXT, analytics are not only included in your price, but also fully integrated in the rest of your fundraising processes.
Every NXT package comes with Wealth Ratings, that draw on public assets, such as real estate and company ownership, to return a simple score that indicates wealth.

This tile shows an example of what you could allow Fundraisers see back in RE NXT on the constituent record, so you have the tools to fully qualify and move donors through the pipeline.
ResearchPoint is also where you can store your own custom models, which could also surface back into RE NXT.
So now that you have all of this great data about your supporters, what do you do with it?
The next exciting area of NXT is all around online fundraising – from email marketing to online giving to crowdfundraising, all of this comes standard with NXT.
NXT includes Online Express, a simple email marketing and online giving tool.
This allows for you to take your segmented lists built from analytics, and send mobile-friendly emails directly to constituents.

There are really 5 basic steps that you can use to determine the return on investment that NXT can bring to your organization.
The first step is to take an inventory of all the items you are paying for today.
This should include everything from your CRM database (including what you pay for RE7 if you’re a client), to NCOA costs, wealth screenings, online giving, email, payment services, events, membership, etc.
If you are currently housing software on your own servers, you will want to calculate the amount you are spending annually on maintaining this yourself.
Here you want to look at how much you spend each year on server hardware, maintenance, even power consumption, as well as backups, upgrades, and integrations.
You’ll also want to look at soft costs – such as labor and downtime. We think of labor costs tied to monitoring hardware and software as a “soft cost” because there are more strategic things that IT professionals could be spending time on to impact the org. Downtime can have a significant cost to the org – NPOs on average lose around $1,000 per hour they are down.
These are all costs that can be avoided when moving to a cloud solution such as NXT, where all of these services are baked into your subscription price.
The third step will be to look at how NXT can impact your annual performance.
These are just three ways to analyze the impact NXT can have, using an example of an organization with 50,000 records.
The first area we see a lot of savings is tied to address updates. To calculate this, take your total records x annual move rate x cost per mail
We also see annual GAINS tied to email appends. Take total records, multiply by 20% append rate, then use your avg gift/ email
Finally, we see the largest impact on annual revenue tied to major donor analytics. Here we take the total number of annual donors, and assume that 5% are identified as likely major donors. Using targeted asks, we expect about 1 out of 4 of these prospects to convert. Multiplying that by your average major gift amount, you can easily predict the additional revenue you could gain from major donor identification & targeted asks.
The next thing you will want to do is understand your NXT investment. Here you will want to have a conversation with your Account Executive, who will help you decide which package is right for you and the record band that you fall within.
Once you have these pieces of information, you are ready to put it all together for an analysis of your return on investment.
