Why Grid Sample
1. 13611 B St Omaha, NE 68144 (402) 334-7770 www.midwestlabs.com
Why Grid Sample?
Over the last two decades Midwest Laboratories has seen large increases in
the number of soil samples submitted for nutrient analysis. GPS based grid
and zone type sampling has been a major reason for this increase.
What is grid sampling?
Grid or zone based sampling uses global positioning information to break a
field down into smaller management units. These grids or zones are typically
1 to 5 acres in size. A separate soil sample is taken from each of these
areas. Samples are analyzed at Midwest Laboratories and a fertilizer
prescription is developed to apply nutrients at rates that vary according to a
map of these soil test values.
Why grid sample?
With the increased use of yield maps, growers can now see the variability of
yields and, consequently, nutrient removal from area to area within their
fields. This is a major reason for variable rate fertilizer application. Other
reasons include:
1. Old building sites and livestock facilities are now included in
cropped areas.
2. Smaller fields with different crop and fertilizer history are now
combined into larger fields.
3. Irrigated and non-irrigated areas often require separate fertility
rates.
4. There are different natural fertility levels and soil nutrient holding
capabilities within the same field.
What a grower really wants to accomplish with grid or zone sampling is to
identify areas that need additional fertility as well as those that do not.
Fertilizer can then be applied accordingly. For example, an 80 acre field may
August 2013
2. have an average P1 Bray phosphorus value of 15 ppm and an average soil
pH of 5.8, but the field has a 5 acre old building site and feed yard with a P1
Bray value of 80 ppm and a soil pH of 7.3. This same field also contains a
low yielding area that has received the same broadcast fertilizer application
as the rest of the field and now tests 32 ppm on the P1 Bray test. The
fertilizer that would have been applied to the old building site, feed yard, and
low yielding area in a broadcast program can now be applied in a higher
yielding area of the field that only tests at a P1 Bray level of 12 ppm. A
higher rate of lime can be applied to an area testing at a pH of 5.5 instead of
applying it on the area with a pH of 7.3.
GPS based grid or zone type sampling and variable rate fertilizer
prescriptions automate the fertilizing process. They can apply this logic
across hundreds of separate areas in a field and come up with the optimal
amount of fertilizer or lime to apply to each area.

3. A Real World Example
The soil test values for an example field are shown on the next few pages.
We've also included the mapped soil test values using software interpolation
based off the analysis of the soil samples and their geo-referenced locations.
On report # 12-331-0980, we see the average soil test Bray 1 Phosphorus (P)
level is 19 ppm with the lowest testing area at 4 ppm and the highest at
207 ppm. A good composite sample of this field showing 19 ppm would call
for a nutrient recommendation at or slightly above crop removal. A grid
sample based recommendation would vary significantly across this field but
would have approximately the same total amount of fertilizer applied. The
same holds true for the potassium (K) test levels. The average value is 174
ppm with the lowest area tests at 89 ppm and with the highest at 691 ppm.
The amount of potassium fertilizer applied should vary according to these
differences.
