Transformational Leadership: Advanced Practice Registered Nurse’s Role Terren L.
Cheesbro Louise Herrington School of Nursing, Baylor University NUR 5211: Servant
Leadership Dr. Marcella Upshaw-Owens July 2, 2021 2 Transformational Leadership:
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse’s Role Leadership in the healthcare field is essential
and not related to only management. Anyone can be a leader, and many are without
realizing they are leading. During a recent interview of an Advanced Practice Registered
Nurse (APRN), Valentino Parris, it was discovered that he possesses the characteristics of a
transformational leader. Mr. Parris has been an APRN for eight years and has been working
at the Federal Medical Center for just over a year. A broad search was conducted for
literature to identify studies on the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) role in
transformational leadership. CINAHL and the Baylor University library OneSearch were
searched using the keywords “transformational leadership,” “transformational leadership
theory in nursing,” and “Advanced Practice Registered Nurses.” The search resulted in 475
articles, narrowed to 10 by reading the bibliography reviews for relevance. Unfortunately,
only a few articles discussed the APRN, so most of the articles discuss how transformational
nursing relates to Registered Nurses.Nursing Transformational Leadership PaperThe need
for transformational leadership in healthcare organizations is essential as they are
constantly required to change, revise, and adapt to a constantly changing environment
(McCaffrey & Reinoso, 2017). According to Poghosyan & Bernhardt (2018), nurse
practitioners play a significant role in leadership. While there are not many studies on it,
they recognize transformational leadership as the style that significantly impacts
healthcare. The ability to adapt to change and to inspire followers to adapt to change is one
of the main leadership roles of the APRN in healthcare (Elliot & Walden, 2015; Leggat,
Balding & Schiftan, 2015). Utley, Anderson, Atwell (2011), Pearson (2020), and Goldsberry
(2018) state that for an APRN to be 3 successful they need to be able to help others achieve
goals, be a partner in the healthcare team, and to have good communications skills. APRNs
may not view themselves as leaders, but as part of the team; and advanced practice nurses,
they are looked up to by fellow nurses. Transformational leadership allows for change and
emphasizes the importance of working as a team and allowing other members of the
organization to have a voice (Blake, 2020). By encouraging innovative thinking and creating
new ideas from team members, the APRN can develop a successful team that also creates an
improved environment for the patients. When the team can work together to improve
healthcare, the patients as well as the team benefit. If staff are unhappy in their jobs, their
productivity, and their drive to succeed are diminished. According to Fischer (2016), the
key characteristics of transformational leadership, such as caring for followers, ethical
behaviors, and value-based decisions, can be taught. Elliott et al. (2017) discuss the
Transformational Advanced Professional Practice (TAPP) Model, which supports the
development of advanced practice providers that offers structure, role clarity, and support
from management. For an APRN to be a good role model and leader, they need to also feel
4. like they are a part of the team and their voice matters.Nursing Transformational
Leadership PaperThese works all describe transformational leadership characteristics and
some of the essential characteristics that are essential to be a good leader and role model.
While not all the articles describe the role of the APRN, they do describe the effects of
transformational leadership on the healthcare field and nursing in general. 4 References
