The document provides an overview of the history of currencies in India, noting that the first currency notes were introduced by the Bank of Bengal in the early 1800s, though they lacked security features, and that the British government later established a monopoly on printing currency under the Paper Currency Act of 1861, introducing several different series of notes up until the modern-looking George V series in 1923, which also included a high-value 10000 denomination note.

The Lipstick Effect or Lipstick theory
Theory say's that lipstick purchases are a way of measuring the economy.
During times of economic uncertainty, women load up on affordable luxuries as a substitute for more
expensive items like clothing and jewelery. This phenomenon is called The Lipstick Effect. The theory was first
identified in the Great Depression, when industrial production in the US halved, but sales of cosmetics rose
between 1929 and 1933.
However as a theory it was proposed by Leonard Lauder, chairman of Estée Lauder Companies. After the
terrorist attacks of 2001, which affected the U.S. economy on a large scale, Lauder noted that his company
was selling more lipstick than usual.
Another is Revlon's history, this famous cosmetic company was founded in the middle of the Great
Depression, 1932, by Charles Revson and his brother Joseph, along with a chemist, Charles Lachman, who
contributed to " L "in the name of REVLON.

7. The POST-IT Notes Story
Art Fry, the inventor of Post-It Notes, used 3M‘s famed 15–percent rule to develop a bookmark he could use
for his choir book. Needing a placeholder that would stick temporarily without ripping the pages, he heard of
a 3M adhesive developed by Dr. Spence Silver that did not stick to a surface permanently. Working with
developers in engineering and production, they developed a unique coating process that would apply the
nonsticky adhesive to the back of small pieces of paper. Once the prototype was in place, Fry used company
employees to test his bookmark. Initial feedback was not reassuring as critics thought they were too frivolous
and expensive. It was only after receiving a letter with his ―bookmark‖ used to add scribbled comments, that
Fry realized he hadn‘t invented a bookmark but rather a new way to communicate or organize information.

From origin of Maruti to the existence of Durga Bhabhi
I was invited to meet Mr. Arvind Srivastava (owner of Lucknow based MBA-Preparation-Coaching -ICC) with
whom I had worked in the past, and was greeted by another acquaint, Gurjeet Sir ( ICC's maths and reasoning
faculty). It was a very exciting meet, which ended up in throwing some ‘s , little-bit of India TV or Aaj-Tak type
(like Rahul Baba‘s would-be is Jatin Prasad‘s sister) and lots of just-concluded-IPL‘s( which was won by UPA)
debating content.
Now, the two most amazing fact which I had not known before this meet was the origin of Maruti and
existence of Durga Bhabhi in my own city.
You don’t know who Maruti Mohan was...?
Like a typical UP wala all three of us started our debate on the outcome of just concluded political league, in
between to that discussion here come an interesting for all of you ..
Me: I was so happy that Junta in Lucknow taught Akhilesh Das a lesson that no one can win election using
only money-power
Gurjeet Sir: what more interesting is that Lucknow has shown it twice, first it was V. R. Mohan now its Das. (I
posted a qts on Mr. Mohan in the BiZdom 3*3 no 26, he is/was the owner of Mohan Mekin)
Arvind Sir: ok both of you tell me about another thing which is often seen by us and is very much part of V R
Mohan.
After a silence of few seconds and our lack of knowledge, came the word ‗Maruti‘
Gurjeet Sir: Ohh I was thinking that
Totally confused or rather in another world I asked them the logic, which was quite surprisingly responded by
Gurjeet sir ― aare tu Maruti Mohan ko nahi janta...aare Sanjay Gandhi ki girl friend thi..V R mohan ki beti..jis ke
naam pe Maruti company is named‖
Now it was my turn to surprise and hence responded ...never heard of this story..so here come the golden
word
Gurjeet Sir: this ‗Fact‘ was never shown light, after another amazing event, when the PM son was forced to
marry a girl and even his mother was not part of it and infact bridegroom himself was not part of it as the
The Best of BiZdoM ParT 1 | 4/14/2011
marriage took place on gun-point.
Given the conviction of both of them and their knowledge on political circle, I am now happy forced to accept
this story as a fact..
Below is the little prove of what I am saying ..[text is taken from a book called Committees and Commissions

9. You don’t know Durga Bhabhi also....
I didn‘t felt bad on my lack of knowledge on Maruti Mohan, but on the account of Durga Bhabhi, it was a
humiliation.
Anyway to cut the story short, Durga Bhabhi had spend most of his post-independence life in Lucknow and
she was the founder-principal of Lucknow Montessory School . In the movie Rang de Basanti, Soha Ali Khan is
shown in her role.
Married to Bhagwati Charan Vohra, another freedom fighter, Durga Bhabhi was a simple housewife living in
Lucknow till her husband‘s death. Vohra, closely associated with Hindustan Socialist Republican Association as
well as Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru, died in an explosion while conducting bomb trials. It was then The Best of BiZdoM ParT 1 | 4/14/2011
Durga Bhabhi took over. Her house became a meeting point for freedom fighters with Durga Bhabhi taking
part extensively in the discussions.
But her most famous contribution was when she pretended to be Bhagat Singh‘s wife and together, they
managed to flee from the first-class compartment of a train, after Bhagat Singh shot Saunders, a British
official.
After independence, Durga Bhabhi opened Lucknow Montessory School for poor children in Purana Qila area.
She died at the age of 92 in 1999, and was survived by her son Shachichandra Vohra.

History of Smiley Faces!
The need to involve feelings and emotions in a written text existed long before the creation of emoticons and
the emergence of computer networks. First such use is documented on 1857, when the numeric code "73"
was added in a message written in Morse code an a symbol of affectionate "love and kisses".
Later on , in September 1982, Scott Fahlman posted the following message to the BBS boards of Carnegie

The other 'smiley'
The Smiley Face was actually designed in 1964 by Harvey Ball, a co-owner of an advertising and public
relations firm in Worchester, Massachusetts. In the early 60s, State Mutual Life Assurance of Worcester
initiated a merger detrimentrally affected company morale. In 1964, the company started up a ―friendship
campaign‖ to get employees to smile whenever possible, even while they typed reports. How did the
company do this? This was where Harvey Ball came into play. Ball spent about 10 minutes designing the
smiley face and the company gave him $45 in return. Ball received no other profit from his invention and he
had never copyrighted it. By the 1970s, the smiley face became the ultimate symbol for Americans of
happiness and joy.
Indian Currencies Part 1
First currency notes were introduced in India by Bank
of Bengal initially known as Bank of Calcutta in early
1800. Initially, Bank of Bengal only introduced one
sided notes for limited circulation as substitute for
gold mohurs. These notes were printed on one side
while leaving blank other side of notes. However, later
The Best of BiZdoM ParT 1 | 4/14/2011
bank also introduced both side printed and more
advanced notes for commercial use.
These notes were very ordinary type and do not have
security feature like present notes have. Many of
these notes helped British government in funding
battle against various Indian rulers like Tipu Sultan
and Marathas. In 1861, British government passed Paper Currency Act of 1861 which provided them
monopoly to print and issue Indian currencies notes. British government published notes for India under
different series starting from Victoria portrait series and ending with George V series.
In between, they also introduced Underprint series and King‘s portrait series. With the introduction of Victoria

portrait series, first British Indian notes came into existence. These notes were available in the value of 10, 20,
50, 100 and 1000. In 1867, British government introduced more advanced and secure underprint series by
withdrawing Victoria portrait series because of reports of forgery. Present look of Indian currency mainly
emerge in 1923 with the introduction of George V series. In George V series, note of 10000 denomination was
also introduced by government.
In George V series notes, security thread was also introduced for first time in Indian currency notes as an
enhanced security feature. In 1935, Reserve Bank of India came in to existence and it took control of complete
currency circulation in India. British Indian currency remained in circulation in India till 1947 and as frozen
currency till 1950. Today, these British Indian currency notes have become part of Indian history. Below,
people can watch some pictures of rare paper currency notes of India which first came in to circulation
(before Independence).

The origin of Love, Duck and Nil
The term ‗love‘, meaning 0, in tennis is derived from the French ‗l‘oeuf‘, meaning ‗the egg‘ – an egg looking
not unlike a 0. The same thinking gave rise to the use of ‗duck‘ in cricket for a batsman‘s score of 0. Scratch is
the golfing term for 0, as in ‗scratch out‘, meaning to erase. A ‗scratch golfer‘ plays off a 0 handicap. Nil is a
term that is rarely used outside the field of (one exception being the medical phrase ‗nil by mouth‘, meaning
‗not to be swallowed‘). Nil is a simple abbreviation of ‗nihil‘, the Latin word for nothing.

19. The Men Behind Liquors
Here‘s some biographical detail on the men behind favorite tipples.
1. Captain Morga n
The Captain wasn‘t always just the choice of sorority girls looking to blend spiced
rum with Diet Coke; in the 17th century he was a feared privateer. Not only did the Welsh pirate marry his
own cousin, he ran risky missions for the governor of Jamaica, including capturing some Spanish prisoners in
Cuba and sacking Port-au-Prince in Haiti. He then plundered the Cuban coast before holding for ransom the
entire city of Portobelo, Panama. He later looted and burned Panama City, but his pillaging career came to an
end when Spain and England signed a peace treaty in 1671. Instead of getting in trouble for his high-seas
antics, Morgan received knighthood and became the lieutenant governor of Jamaica.
2. Johnnie Walker
The Best of BiZdoM ParT 1 | 4/14/2011
Walker, the name behind the world‘s most popular brand of Scotch whisky,
was born in 1805 in Ayrshire, Scotland. When his father died in 1819, Johnnie inherited a trust of a little over
400 pounds, which the trustees invested in a grocery store. Walker grew to become a very successful grocer in
the town of Kilmarnock and even sold a whisky, Walker‘s Kilmarnock Whisky. Johnnie‘s son Alexander was the
one who actually turned the family into famous whisky men, though. Alexander had spent time in Glasgow
learning how to blend teas, but he eventually returned to Kilmarnock to take over the grocery from his father.
Alexander turned his blending expertise to whisky, and came up with ―Old Highland Whisky,‖ which later
became Johnnie Walker Black Label.
3. Jack Daniel
18
20. THE BEST OF BIZDOM PART 1
Jasper Newton ―Jack‖ Daniel of Tennessee whiskey fame was the
descendant of Welsh settlers who came to the United States in the early 19th century. He was born in 1846 or
1850 and was one of 13 children. By 1866 he was distilling whiskey in Lynchburg, Tennessee. Unfortunately for
the distiller, he had a bit of a temper. One morning in 1911 Daniel showed up for work early and couldn‘t get
his safe open. He flew off the handle and kicked the offending strongbox. The kick was so ferocious that
Daniel injured his toe, which then became infected. The infection soon became the blood poisoning that
killed the whiskey mogul.
Curious about why your bottle of J.D. also has Lem Motlow listed as the distillery‘s proprietor? Daniel‘s own
busy life of distilling and safe-kicking kept him from ever finding a wife and siring an heir, so in 1907 he gave
the distillery to his beloved nephew Lem Motlow, who had come to work for him as a bookkeeper.
4. Jose Cuervo
The Best of BiZdoM ParT 1 | 4/14/2011
In 1758, Jose Antonio de Cuervo received a land grant from the King of
Spain to start an agave farm in the Jalisco region of Mexico. Jose used his agave plants to make mescal, a
popular Mexican liquor. In 1795, King Carlos IV gave the land grant to Cuervo‘s descendant Jose Maria
Guadalupe de Cuervo. Carlos IV also granted the Cuervo family the first license to commercially make tequila,
so they built a larger factory on the existing land. The family started packaging their wares in individual
bottles in 1880, and in 1900 the booze started going by the brand name Jose Cuervo. The brand is still under
the leadership of the original Jose Cuervo‘s family; current boss Juan-Domingo Beckmann is the sixth
generation of Cuervo ancestors to run the company.
19
21. 5. Jim Beam
Jim Beam, the namesake of the world‘s best-selling bourbon whiskey, didn‘t
actually start the distillery that now bears his name. His great-grandfather Jacob Beam opened the distillery in
1788 and started selling his first barrels of whiskey in 1795. In those days, the whiskey went by the less-catchy
moniker of ―Old Tub.‖ Jacob Beam handed down the distillery to his son David Beam, who in turn passed it
along to his son David M. Beam, who eventually handed the operation off to his son, Colonel James
Beauregard Beam, in 1894. Although he was only 30 years old when he took over the family business, Jim
Beam ran the distillery until Prohibition shut him down. Following repeal in 1933, Jim quickly built a distillery
and began resurrecting the Old Tub brand, but he also added something new to the company‘s portfolio: a
bourbon simply called Jim Beam.
6. Tanqueray
When he was a young boy, Charles Tanqueray‘s path through life seemed
pretty clear. He was the product of three straight generations of Bedfordshire clergymen, so it must have
seemed natural to assume that he would take up the cloth himself. Wrong. Instead, he started distilling gin in
1830 in a little plant in London‘s Bloomsbury district. By 1847, he was shipping his gin to colonies around the The Best of BiZdoM ParT 1 | 4/14/2011
British Empire, where many plantation owners and troops had developed a taste for Tanqueray and tonic.
7. Campari
20
22. THE BEST OF BIZDOM PART 1
Gaspare Campari found his calling quickly. By the time he was 14, he had
risen to become a master drink mixer in Turin, and in this capacity he started dabbling with a recipe for an
aperitif. When he eventually settled on the perfect mixture, his concoction had over 60 ingredients. In 1860,
he founded Gruppo Campari to make his trademark bitters in Milan. Like Colonel Sanders‘ spice blend, the
recipe for Campari is a closely guarded secret supposedly known by only the acting Gruppo Campari
chairman, who works with a tiny group of employees to make the concentrate with which alcohol and water
are infused to get Campari. The drink is still made from Gaspare Campari‘s recipe, though, which includes
quinine, orange peel, rhubarb, and countless other flavorings.

BAND-AIDS (1921)
The Best of BiZdoM ParT 1 | 4/14/2011
In 1921, Earle Dickson, and employee of Johnson & Johnson, married a woman
who kept injuring herself in the kitchen.
* As he repeatedly bandaged her cuts and burns with gauze and adhesive tape, he became frustrated; the
clumsy bandages kept falling off. So he decide to create something ―that would stay in place, be easily
applied, and still retain its sterility.‖ He stuck some gauze in the center of a piece of adhesive tape, and
covered the whole thing with crinoline to keep it sterile. It worked.
* He made up a batch for his wife and took a few in to show his co-workers. The company‘s owner, James
Johnson, heard about it and asked for a demonstration-which convinced him to begin manufacturing the
product.
IVORY SOAP (1879)
28
30. THE BEST OF BIZDOM PART 1
Harley Procter and his cousin, chemist James Gammble, came up with a special new soap in 1878. It was
smooth and fragrant and produced a consistant lather… but it wasn‘t Ivory-it was called White Soap-and it
didn‘t float.
* One day in 1879, the man operating Procter & Gamble‘s soap mixing machine forgot to turn it off when he
went to lunch. On returning, he discovered that so much air had been whipped into the soap that it actually
floated.
* For some reason, the batch wasn‘t discarded-it was made into bars and shipped out with the other White
Soap. Soon, to their surprise, P&G was getting letters demanding more of ―that soap that floats.‖ So they
started putting extra air into every bar.
* Now that they had a unique product, they needed a unique name. And they found it in the Bible. Procter
was reading the 45th Psalm-which say: “All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the
ivory palaces…”-when it hit him that ivory was just the word he was looking for.
* In October 1879, the first bar of Ivory Soap was sold.
VELCRO (1957)
A young Swiss inventor named George De Mestrel went for a hike one day in 1948. When he returned, he was
annoyed to find burrs stuck to his clothes. But his annoyance turned to fascination. Why, he wondered,
wouldn‘t it be possible to create synthetic burrs that could be used as fasteners?
The Best of BiZdoM ParT 1 | 4/14/2011
* Most people scoffed but a French weaver took him seriously. Using a small loom,
the weaver hand-wove two cotton strips that stuck together when they touched. The secret: one strip had
hooks, the other had loops.
* Years passed; De Mestrel experimented constantly. Finally he found a suitable material-nylon, which, it
turned out, became very hard when treated with infrared light.
* Now he knew how to make loops by machine-but he still couldn‘;t figure out how to mass-produce the
hooks.
* Finally a solution hit him. He bought a pair of barber‘s clippers and took then to a weaver. With the clippers,
he demonstrated his idea-a loom that snipped loops as it wove them, creating little nylon hooks. He worked

POP-UP ELECTRIC TOASTER
The first electric toasters, which appeared around 1900, were primitively constructed heating coils that were
terrible fire hazards. However, they were a luxury-it was the first time in history that people didn‘t need to fire
up a stove just to make a piece of toast.
* There was a built-in problem, though-the bread had to be constantly watched or it would burn to a crisp.
* In 1919, Charles Strite, a Minnesota factory worker, got sick of the burnt toast in the company cafeteria. So,
in his spare time, he designed and patented the first pop-up toaster. Then he went into business
manufacturing them. It took years to work out the bugs, but by 1926, Strite‘s ―Toastmasters‖ were relatively
fireproof.
* A few years late, a New York businessman purchased Strite‘s company and invested heavily in advertising-
which proved to be the key ingredient in making the toaster a common household appliance.

DISCOVERING X-RAYS
X-rays are a type of radiation can penetrate materials that light can not. These rays allow us to "see" inside
objects (for example, the human body) without opening them.
The story begins with X-ray experiments by the British scientist William Crookes , who investigated in the
nineteenth century the effect of certain gases to energy shocks. These experiments took place in a vacuum
tube, and electrodes to generate high voltage current. Él lo llamó tubo de Crookes . He called Crookes tube.
Despite the discovery, Crookes did not continue investigating this effect. Nikola Tesla , in 1887, he began to
study this effect created by Crookes tubes. One of the consequences of their research was to warn the
scientific community to the danger of biological organisms which involves exposure to these radiations.

The first ―self-acting‖ laundry detergent was launched by Henkel in the German market on June 6, 1907, and
was given the name ―Persil‖. The name derived from the two most important chemical raw materials in the

Persil quickly made its name on the market, winning the trust of consumers. To assure consumers of the
product‘s consistently high quality, Persil was given a manufacturer‘s warranty.

Mitticool - a product of Mansukhbhai
The Best of BiZdoM ParT 1 | 4/14/2011
Mansukhbhai, a school drop-out, he has achieved a feat that many in the world envy today. The simple and
unassuming Mansukhbhai is not keen on money. His ambition is to make more low-cost and eco-friendly
products for the masses. "I failed in the tenth standard. But I was not disappointed as I knew that I was
capable of making something new," says Mansukhbhai who holds a patent for Mitticool. He has been
popularising earthen products since 1988. Besides, the low-cost fridge, he has developed a water filter, non-
stick tava and a pressure cooker all made of clay.

Mitticool, a clay refrigerator that works without electricity had turned the world's attention to its creator
Mansukhbhai Prajapati, a craftsman based in Gujarat. "A good majority of Indians cannot buy a fridge as it is
expensive. Besides this, electricity bills and maintenance cost is also high. Mitticool is an eco-friendly product
which has no maintenance costs. It also retains the original taste of vegetables, says Mansukhbhai who has
sold 1500 units so far. The upper part of the refrigerator stores water, while the bottom unit has space for
fruits, vegetables and milk.

The beginning
Pottery has been the Prajapati family's traditional business. Mansukhbhai‘s family belonged to Morbi in Rajkot
district. However, his father gave up the profession as it was not getting them any money. It was all hard work
without much gain. He being the only son was sent to school on the hope that he would do well in academics
and get a good life. However, he disappointed them when he failed tenth standard. To make matters worse,
he refused to take up construction work which his father had started doing. He was however forced to do all
sorts of odd jobs. He even injured an eye working in a brick factory. "I was fed up. I wanted to start my own
factory. But there was no way I could do it without resources. I joined a tile factory. I worked there for
sometime. This was a turning point for me," he says.
He found that tiles were manufactured at a fast pace with a machine which was quite expensive. He took a
loan of Rs 30,000 and started a small factory. At the age of 18, he made a machine, which could make 600
tavas a day instead of 100 tavas they used to make manually. This gave him lot of confidence to explore and
innovate. He got the idea to make a machine for about Rs 4,000, which could help him manufacture more
tavas than was being done manually. His initiative to restart the pottery business was not taken positively. But
he went ahead despite opposition.
The business
By 1995, he realised the need to build a water filter. The market had steel filters which were not very efficient.
After months of research and hard work, he built a water filter. Luck favoured him too. "A person who had
The Best of BiZdoM ParT 1 | 4/14/2011
settled in Nairobi heard about my project and approached me for 500 units. I was excited. I sold it making Rs
100,000 on the first sale. It was a good start. The product I developed was sold in Nairobi even before it sold
in India," he says. The water filters priced at Rs 350 to 400 are quite popular. Later in 2005, he started the non-
stick tava (pan) business. "My wife could not buy a non-stick tava as it was costly. So I thought many people
would be facing the same problem. That's when I designed the non-stick tavas, priced between Rs 50-100." It
took him a year to research and experiment -- testing the material for the non stick coating etc. The food
grade test for the pan was done by Tata Chemicals in Mumbai.
Mansukhbhai has sold more than 50,000 tavas. He had to make thousands of tavas before he made the
perfect one.
Gujarat Grassroots Innovation Network and professors at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and
47
49. the National Innovation Foundation, extended their help in the form of grant and guidance for getting the
patent, making the packing box and lab testing of products.
The idea behind Mitticool
During the 2001 earthquake, all earthen pots were broken. Some people told me the poor people's
refrigerators are broken. They referred to the 'matkas'(pots) as refrigerators.
It struck me then that I must try to make a fridge for those who cannot afford to buy a fridge. The patent
winning Mitticool has been the most challenging product for him. It needed a lot of experimenting. He started
work on it in 2001; the product was finally ready by 2004.
The Best of BiZdoM ParT 1 | 4/14/2011
It took him almost four years of hard labour and an investment of about Rs 10 lakh (Rs 1 million). An engineer
who saw the fridge asked him to make 100 units. This was a great morale booster. It takes 10 people to make
a fridge in one day. Made from clay, the refrigerator can store water, fruits, and vegetables for 8 days and milk
for one day.

portions of the rubber-like material in plastic eggs.
It can be stretched, rolled into a bouncing ball, or used to transfer colored ink from print. The original
discovery is made in 1943 by James Wright, who combined silicone oil and boric acid in the laboratories of
General Electric. He was researching methods of making synthetic rubber, but at the time no significant
application existed for the material. However, it was passed around as a curiosity. Hodgson saw a sample and
realized its potential simply for entertainment and coined its name for marketing it as a toy. Its popularity
made him a millionaire.

The Peter Principle
The Peter Principle: Why Things Always Go Wrong was a slim, 167-page management self-help book that
became a best seller.
It is a book by Laurence J. Peter (a former teacher) and Raymond Hull (a playwright). The root of the entire
book, the condition of incompetence that Peter called ―Final Placement Syndrome,‖ leads some to develop
―Abnormal Tabulology‖ (an ―unusual and highly significant arrangement of his desk‖). This pathology is
manifested, for example, in ―Tabulatory Gigantism‖ (an obsession with having a bigger desk than his
colleagues). The ―Teeter-Totter Syndrome‖ refers to ―a complete inability to make decisions‖ and ―Cachinatory
Inertia‖ means ―the habit of telling jokes instead of getting on with business‖. Later some aspects of the
theory were revived in the 1990s by the cynical business cartoon Dilbert by Scott Adams.

consists of a set of bellows attached to the hull of a ship just below the water line. On reaching a shallow
place, the bellows are filled with air and the vessel, thus buoyed, is expected to float clear.

59. Inventions & Inventors: Guglielmo Marconi
Italian physicist and inventor who is credited with the invention of radio or wireless telegraphy. Guglielmo
Marconi was born in a wealthy family of Bologna. In 1895 he was able to transmit wireless telegraph signals to
two kilometers, which is considered the birth of radio.
Son of an Italian father and Irish mother, he studied at Leghorn and later at the Universities of Bologna and
Florence, where he became interested in experiments on the airwaves.

By 1894 he began to investigate the transmission and reception of electromagnetic waves in his father's
house in Bologna, gradually increasing the distance between transmitter and receiver from 30 cm up to
hundreds of meters.
In 1895 he discovered that by placing a Hertz spark generator on top of a rod, the reception range could be
increased to several kilometers. He built a small device, whose range was 2.5 km, consisting of a transmitter, a

Hertz spark generator and a receiver based on the effect discovered by the French engineer Edouard Branly in
1890. After seeing not much response with the Italian authorities, Marconi decided to go to the UK. Soon after
arriving in London he received the support of the chief engineer of the Post Office, and in July 1896 after a
series of improvements, he manged to patented the invention, which caused a stir among scientists of the
time.
How doodling evolved at Google
Google doodlers are a small team of artists who create the decorative s for the company's home page, images
that celebrate events as varied as the 30th anniversary of Pac-Man and the 70th birthday of John Lennon to
the invention of the bar code and the landing of the Mars rover.
It all started with Dennis Hwang, who grew up in Korea and came to the United States in middle school, not
speaking a word of English. After doodling his way through school, Hwang graduated from Stanford with
degrees in art and computer science. In 2000, working as an intern, Hwang was asked by Google founders
Larry Page and Sergey Brin to do a doodle for Bastille Day.
The Best of BiZdoM ParT 1 | 4/14/2011
Hwang realized, "Something that used to be frowned upon -- my drawing -- turned out to be my greatest
asset."
Page and Brin had started the doodle tradition in the summer of 1998 as a way to alert users they were "out
of office," at the Burning Man festival. In case the site crashed, they wanted users to know why no one at
Google was answering the phone. Using clip art, Page and Brin created a small stickman figure placed behind
the second "O" in Google.
"Larry and Sergey had done some of these themselves," Hwang said of the first doodles. "And they used
freelance artists. The doodles didn't have any consistency, and they covered mainly the big U.S. holidays. So
when I joined, we started a slightly more formal process and looked at how to have more fun with it."
59
61. He continued: "Since early on, our users have been very passionate about the doodles. In 2003, we celebrated
the 50th anniversary of the understanding of DNA. I created something I thought was pretty aesthetically
exciting and proudly posted it. Within minutes, I started to get e-mails from around the world, with scientists
saying this is not a double helix. It was a couple of pixels off in terms of the crossover point."
Hwang, now a webmaster at Google who continues to consult with the doodle team, believes that the Google
home page, in essence, is the face of the company. "I think when users see the face changing to reflect the
holidays and occasions they too are celebrating with their families, it gives them a connection and reminds
them there are people working hard behind the scenes."

65. Holidoo: Zoo sells elephant poop in time for Christmas
Believe it or not, people who garden might actually want some elephant dung to spread around their flower
beds. From a zoo spokeswoman:
"Holidoo is the ideal present for garden enthusiasts or that person who seems to have everything! The
festively packaged Holidoo product is available exclusively during the holiday season only at the ZooStore in
jumbo-sized, 4-gallon containers. Traditional Zoo Doo compost is also available in 2-gallon buckets or pints
for stocking stuffers."
In that case, maybe the naughty kids really will get dung in their stockings.
Holidoo is a blend of elephant manure and bedding, "the biggest and richest composting materials at the
zoo," according to zoo officials. A four-gallon container costs $20.
The year-round Zoo Doo costs $12.95 for a two-gallon container and $4.95 for the pint-sized "stocking-
stuffer" container. Both blends are available at Woodland Park's two ZooStores. The Best of BiZdoM ParT 1 | 4/14/2011

67. Linda Himelstein: Smirnoff, rags to riches to rags
Chances are, when you take a shot of vodka, the last thing you think
about is the story behind the brand.
But there's a lot of history there, especially if the vodka is Smirnoff. In
"The King of Vodka," Linda Himelstein chronicles the history of Pyotr
Smirnov, the man who built and lost an alcohol empire.
"I became just completely enamored and passionate with the story of
this man who was a serf, who came from nothing in tsarist Russia to
become one of the richest and most powerful merchants there was,"
Himelstein says. "And his brand still exists today."
Himelstein fell into the story somewhat by accident, as Smirnov's The Best of BiZdoM ParT 1 | 4/14/2011
descendants began to sue for the trademarks and copyrights they had
lost under communism. The more Himelstein - then working as the
legal affairs editor at Business Week magazine - looked into the saga,
the more she became fascinated by the man behind the Smirnoff
name.
Part of what intrigued Himelstein was the way Smirnov's story mirrored Russian history. As he bought his
freedom from serfdom, Russia went through emancipation. And as the wealthy elite in Russia lost what they'd
accrued, Smirnov took a hard hit. "I was immediately fascinated by it," Himelstein says. "I never really thought
about what happened to those people, the haves in Russia, after the revolution."
66
68. THE BEST OF BIZDOM PART 1
Smirnov's story also intersects with those of many of his notable Russian contemporaries, which adds to the
book's rich historical context.
"Tolstoy was one of the great temperance advocates in the 19th century, and he fought hard against the
things Smirnov was doing," Himelstein says. "Chekhov wrote articles, and in some of the articles, he referred
to Smirnov and other vodka makers as peddlers of poison."
Chronicling the history was no easy feat for Himelstein, who notes that "The King of Vodka" was a daunting
undertaking. Even with a full-time translator working alongside her, the author confronted her fair share of
challenges. "I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, really," Himelstein says. "The language barrier obviously was
pretty difficult, and Russia's historical archives are not very much like America's archives, so finding
information can be very, very difficult." But her efforts were worthwhile: "The King of Vodka" is an impressive,
in-depth story of a man who might otherwise be forgotten. And while Himelstein still isn't a heavy drinker,
she does have a newfound appreciation for the Smirnoff brand. "Before I started the project, I had no idea
what the difference was between various vodka brands," she says. "But now I actually know how to taste them
and can taste the difference. And I like Smirnoff."

New Bond book "Carte Blanche" takes spy to Dubai
Carte Blanche is the name of the new James Bond novel, which has been set amid the skyscrapers and blue
waters of Dubai and is due for release in May.
The first James Bond novel to be written by Jeffery Deaver is to be titled Carte Blanche, with a release date of
26th May . Deaver has written more than 28 thrillers including The Bone Collector and Garden of Beasts, which
won the UK based CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger award for best thriller in 2004.
Deaver said: "In the world of espionage, giving an agent carte blanche on a mission comes with an enormous
amount of trust and constantly tests both personal and professional judgement. Part of the nonstop suspense
in the novel is the looming question of what is acceptable in matters of national and international security.
Unlike Sebastian Faulks' Bond novel Devil May Care, publisher Penguin's fastest-selling adult novel, Carte
Blanche will be set in the present day, including an updated version of Fleming's favourite car, a Bentley
Continental GT.
