Nine things you need to know about Social Selling
Right now, your prospects are reading about your products and services on blogs and in forums. They
are scanning YouTube videos, your LinkedIn profile, Focus forums, Tweets and searching on Google
for information about what they want to buy and from whom; they are ignoring the text on your
website.
For the past several decades, the traditional B2B sales funnel has worked pretty well. Salespeople
followed a process that went something like this… they identified the prospects they wanted to
contact. If they were smart, they did as much homework as they could to learn about their prospect.
Next, they picked up the phone (or sent an email) to try to secure a meeting. Once the meeting was
booked, said salesperson showed up for the meeting, asked questions to determine problems their
prospect was facing and finally jumped into an educational pitch about their products and services. At
that point, hopefully interest was captured and the salesperson moved in to close the deal.
But now that social media has arrived on the scene, this classic formula has been disrupted. Buyer 2.0
doesn’t need you to educate them. Using the web and social tools, they are well educated on the
features, functionality and pricing of available solutions long before they have their first conversation
with sales.

#1: The Sales Landscape Has Changed
Just a few short years ago, a majority of the sales executives we
talked to believed that social media had no relevance to the
sales process. Many, if not all, thought that social media was not
only a passing fad but they couldn’t grasp why anyone would
bother wasting time with social networking. Even today, it is
surprising that many sales managers are still slow to recognize
social media’s potential and that’s a mistake. Your social
customer demands a new approach from sales organizations
and your sales playbook needs to change!
Consider these facts:
Studies by Experian Marketing Services indicate that social networking now accounts for 15% of
internet visits in the United States.
LinkedIn, the most professionally oriented of the major sites, now has over 150 million users and
they are adding close to a million new users each week.
The micro-blogging platform Twitter has more than 100 million active users with more than 200
million tweets being cranked out each day.
Google+ has now passed 65 million members.
Facebook, while having less B2B networking relevance, should still be leveraged as a way to
engage customers on the company fan page.

#1: The Sales Landscape Has Changed
86% of business buyers engage
in web research independent of
the sales cycle
FORRESTER 2011 B2B SOCIAL
TECHNOGRAPHICS
For sales organizations to succeed in today’s social business
environment, they must first accept that buyer behavior has
changed! Buyer 2.0 is web savvy, informed and probably knows
more about you than you know about them. In this new world,
buyers start the sales process without you, which means that
sellers must shift from a transactional approach to the sales
process to a solution oriented, value focused, and socially
connected approach.
These days, most buying decisions now start, move forward,
and are very often closed online or over the phone without a
single face-to-face meeting. That’s a frightening thought for the
sales professional who has long believed that the only way to
“close a deal” is to be sitting across the table from the prospect.
Salespeople must also recognize and leverage the emphasis
that buyers now place on recommendations, comments and the
referrals of others.
In addition to great people and sales skills, salespeople must also demonstrate that they are social
media savvy and have strong business acumen. In Selling to the C-Suite, authors Stephen J. Bistritz,
Ed.D. and Nicholas A.C. Read conducted extensive research on what buyers want salespeople to
know. The question posed was:
What has to happen in meetings with salespeople for the executive to feel it was effective?
http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 6
#2: What Buyers Want You to Know
With the buying process now
looser and more dependent on
peer input, the data suggests
solution providers will need to
connect with prospects outside
of the traditional sales funnel,
in an ongoing dialog built on
relevant content and real-time
response
BREAKING OUT OF THE FUNNEL
The answer:
1. Demonstrated responsibility
2. Understood my business goals
3. Listened before proposing a solution
4. Displayed knowledge of my industry
Your prospect expects you to understand their business and with social networking tools like LinkedIn
and Twitter and business intelligence tools like InsideView, there is just no excuse for not having done
your homework. We’ll get into that in more detail, but for now what you need to understand is that the
days of walking in the door blind to your prospect’s issues are over. During the meeting is not the time
to ask questions that you should already know the answers to. Meeting preparation is not optional.

#2: What Buyers Want You to Know
There is often confusion about the difference between LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook and how each
applies to the sales process. In a nutshell, here is how the three platforms fit.
LinkedIn is your business networking tool and aids salespeople on the front end of the sales cycle.
Networking, lead generation, and opportunity qualification, securing referrals and establishing
business credibility in your field are just a few of the ways that you can use LinkedIn to your advantage.
Facebook is more casual, conversational and personal in nature. For business, a Facebook fan page
is often used by marketers to create customer loyalty and retention on the back end of the sales cycle.
By cultivating loyal fans, marketing helps to ensure that your company brand remains front and center
in people’s minds.
Twitter is a micro-blogging tool, which means that you share messages with the people in your Twitter
network that are short and concise because you only have 140 characters to use to craft your
message. The real-time nature of the information being shared is a gold mine of business intelligence.
You can follow your competitors to see what kinds of messages they are sending out. Or, follow the
company that your prospect works for and stay on top of what kind of information they are sharing,
what questions they are asking and the vendors they may be recommending.

#3: Understand the Technology
Social selling has risks, but sitting on the sidelines is the greatest risk of all!
You’ve been selling successfully for a long time, so you may be saying to yourself, why do I need to
worry about social media? The answer, by now, should be obvious. Your prospects are there! They are
checking out what you offer and what your competitors offer. Who do you want them to choose?
Einstein was famously quoted as saying that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and
over again expecting a different result. Sales approaches that worked five or ten years ago are just not
effective; it’s time to let them go. Yes, it will take a little up front work to establish your foundation, but
it isn’t as complicated as you may think.
Positioning yourself to succeed in a social selling world includes these elements:
http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 9
#4: The Social Selling Approach
Having a plan
Defining your audience
Crafting your message
Picking the right tools
Implementing actionable tactics consistently
Measuring and tracking
AND…investing in training!
In addition to being relationship oriented and committed to serving the customer, the social
salesperson is well…social. They understand that in this world, a pay-it-forward, give-first-before-
expecting-an-immediate-return mindset is what sets them apart from the majority of their
competitors.
People still buy from people and they need to trust you. Trust takes time. Just because you have
connected with someone on LinkedIn, does not mean that you’ve earned trust in the eyes of that
individual. Creating a perception of trust doesn’t have to be difficult thanks to social media. Using
LinkedIn or Twitter, you can share content that has value, like white papers, case studies,
presentations, industry information and more. You can showcase industry experts who give credence
to your business without you actually having to sell it yourself. The more you give, you more you stand
to receive.
Social salespeople listen before engaging. Their goal is to help to solve problems rather than pitching
what they have to sell. Impatient salespeople have found out the hard way what happens when they
use social media to sell. For example, you connect with someone on LinkedIn and then turn right
around and send them a sales spam email. In the mildest of repercussions, you are merely removed as
a connection. But annoy the wrong person and you just might find that ill-conceived sales spam is
blasted to the online world for everyone to see.

#5: Traits of a Social Salesperson
Remember that buyers are doing their homework and looking for solutions to their business problems.
They search Google, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and anything else that they can find. If your ideal
buyer lands on your LinkedIn page, you need to stand out. Your profile must be compelling enough for
your prospect to want to know more. Make the time to clean up your profile and then commit to
keeping it fresh with content that you update on a regular basis. You may have only one shot at
capturing the attention of your prospect, so make the content on your profile count. Follow some
basics to ensure that your profile rocks!
LinkedIn
Name. Your LinkedIn profile is branding you as a professional salesperson. Use your name and not the
name of your company.
Picture. LinkedIn’s policy is that you include a professional headshot on your profile. Engage a
professional photographer or have co-workers help you by using their camera to grab the shot.
Keywords. You need to rely on keywords to drive traffic to your LinkedIn profile. This may well be one
of the most important fields on your profile. You have 120 characters to leverage. Think about what
your prospects will search for when they have a problem. They do not search on “titles.” They might
search for cloud computing, mobile applications, cell phone technology, but they do not search for
account rep of anything.
http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 11
#6: Your Online Presence Must Rock!
Web sites. LinkedIn lets you showcase three websites on your profile. Do not use the generic labels
such as “My Company” or “My Blog.” Always click “Other” and change the words to describe what
you offer. Interested in showcasing a particular product or service on your website? Customize the
URL with the name and then copy the page URL to direct your prospect to the appropriate page.
Customize Your Public Profile URL. Social selling is all about personal branding and visibility. You
want to secure your “name” as your profile URL if you can. For example:
http://www.linkedin.com/in/barbaragiamanco
Summary. This is the place to really shine! Rather than just a boring bio talking about you, focus your
attention on communicating the results that customers achieve when working with you. Do you help
them increase their sales by 50%? Do your services increase their efficiency and thereby reduce time
spent on non-revenue producing tasks? Think about what is most important to your prospect and
focus on communicating that message.
Specialties. Keywords, as noted earlier, count. It means that the better your keywords are the more
times your LinkedIn profile shows up in search results both inside the LinkedIn platform and external
on the web. Use as many of the keywords and keyword phrases that describe what you do as you can
fit in this section.
Recommendations. Recommendations count, and in order to have a 100% complete profile, you
must have at least three. Secure those recommendations from customers and partners.
http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 12
#6: Your Online Presence Must Rock!
Content Rules! When you add visual POP to your profile, people naturally want to know more. They
may not read the text on the page, but they will scroll through your PowerPoint presentation. All the
applications available in the free version can be found under the “More” tab on the navigation bar. Add
an Amazon Book Reading List, Slideshare to share video, presentations and white papers or share
your blog posts if you have one.
Status Update. Each day update your status so you show up in the news feed of your connections
and appear active on LinkedIn. Use the LinkedIn Today “News” feature to quickly find information
relevant to your industry that you can share. You can also share approved white papers, press
releases, case studies and more. Always include a little bit of text and the link back to the relevant
article. Do this daily and people will review you as a thought leader in your field. You can showcase
events and more!
Join Groups. Participation in LinkedIn groups can not only give you insights into current topics and
trends based on the discussions that are happening, but real-time sales opportunities reveal
themselves here. People are asking what to buy and from whom. Group participation provides an
opportunity to demonstrate expertise WITHOUT selling! Choose relevant groups and think about
where your prospect is likely to be hanging out also.
Twitter
If you have a Twitter account, use the headline space to let a little of your personality shine through.
Oh, and be sure to include your phone number. Make it easy for your prospect to contact you.

#6: Your Online Presence Must Rock!
As we use tools like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, the number
of people that we maintain some degree of one-to-one contact
and connection with via peer networks and groups has
dramatically increased in the past few years. Social sales
people will use these tools to become more adept at
successfully navigating the first few critical phases of the sales
process: investigate and early qualify. Better information leads
to better qualification of sales opportunities. And, used
effectively, social networking shrinks the physical time it takes
to move the opportunity to close.
Social selling is about recognizing that the buying process is controlled by a better informed and more
connected customer. While sales remain a relationship-driven business, the power of "who you know"
is trumped by "what you know about who you know." The new social customer is demanding
relevance from sales people, expecting them to know about them, their companies, and their needs
before engaging. This has heightened the requirement for comprehensive sales intelligence that
brings together both traditional data and social media. It is imperative that sales professionals
leverage the social web to actively listen, engage, and add value to the customer conversation.
Before you decide to engage with your prospect, do your homework and leverage the information in a
way that leads to building rapport. How you leverage the information makes the difference between
being perceived as someone who is paying attention and one who is stalking people.

#7: Intelligence is Key
Who you know is trumped by
what you know about who you
know!
Use social media to research, target, and connect with your ideal (pre-qualified, most likely to buy)
prospects. Then track social interactions along with phone and email. Using social media in conjunction
with phone and email can increase sales cycle conversion metrics such as the critical connect rate.
Busy people (a category that almost unanimously includes every business executive) are less likely to
respond to and engage with salespeople than ever before. According to InsideView, 92% of executives
said they would not respond to a cold call or email from someone that they did not know. Create a
target list of the right companies and the right prospects for you. Know which companies and titles your
offering is most likely to entice, and then connect with them through personal, customized, and relevant
messages rather than generic scripts. Social technology tools can make this very easy to do.
In a great example, by using this approach, our colleagues at simulation technology company PAKRA
gets 17 out of 20 people to accept LinkedIn invitations within 36 hours of sending them out. After their
LinkedIn invitation, PAKRA prospects receive a short, personalized follow-up message that includes a
link to their website. Ten out of 20 recipients respond to those personalized follow-up messages.
PAKRA has tracked prospect engagement back to mentions of:
Something work-related (85% of the time)
A book they are reading (5% of the time)
Other personal information (2% of the time)
Content provided in discussion groups (1% of the time)
http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 15
#8: The ROI
Social Selling also goes beyond reaching out to prospects with
relevant information to leverage personal and company social
graphs. You can take advantage of the connections to which
your social networks expose you.
It is time for sales organizations to get on board. Industry data,
metrics, and success stories prove that prospects use social
media to educate themselves, connect with sellers, and make
buying decisions. Leading companies figure out how to
appropriately use, track, and measure their social selling
initiatives and incorporate them into existing processes.
http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 16
#8: The ROI
“Network Hardware Resale
(NHR) also uses social media in
conjunction with email and
phone to generate meeting with
the right prospects. They have
quadrupled meeting acceptance
rates from 15% to 60%.”
Feeling overwhelmed by trying to keep up with posting to multiple social networks or tracking who
sees your posts? There are lots of tools available for managing your social networks but HootSuite is
our favorite! With HootSuite you can monitor and post to multiple social networks, including
Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, from a single dashboard. You can also schedule messages to reach
your followers when they're most likely to be logged in.
Best of all, the basic version of HootSuite is FREE! Additional features, such as batch scheduling for
up to 50 messages and customized reports to track follower growth and engagement are available
with the Pro version, which sells for just $5.99 per month. An Enterprise version is also available for
larger teams.

#9: Managing Time
We are sales people with more than 25 years sales, sales
management, marketing and technology experience with $1
billion in products and services sold. Before hiring any company
who promises to help you improve your sales, shouldn’t they
actually understand what it’s like to walk in your shoes? We
think so.

  • 3. In this white paper, we outline the nine things that salespeople need to know in order to use social media to increase referrals, prospect- plus generate leads, and shrink sales cycles and increase revenue. 1. The sales landscape has changed 2. What buyers want you to know 3. Understand the technology 4. The social selling approach 5. Traits of a social salesperson 6. Your online presence needs to rock! 7. Intelligence is key 8. The ROI 9. Managing your time and conversations http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 3 Nine things you need to know about Social Selling
  • 4. Right now, your prospects are reading about your products and services on blogs and in forums. They are scanning YouTube videos, your LinkedIn profile, Focus forums, Tweets and searching on Google for information about what they want to buy and from whom; they are ignoring the text on your website. For the past several decades, the traditional B2B sales funnel has worked pretty well. Salespeople followed a process that went something like this… they identified the prospects they wanted to contact. If they were smart, they did as much homework as they could to learn about their prospect. Next, they picked up the phone (or sent an email) to try to secure a meeting. Once the meeting was booked, said salesperson showed up for the meeting, asked questions to determine problems their prospect was facing and finally jumped into an educational pitch about their products and services. At that point, hopefully interest was captured and the salesperson moved in to close the deal. But now that social media has arrived on the scene, this classic formula has been disrupted. Buyer 2.0 doesn’t need you to educate them. Using the web and social tools, they are well educated on the features, functionality and pricing of available solutions long before they have their first conversation with sales. http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 4 #1: The Sales Landscape Has Changed
  • 5. Just a few short years ago, a majority of the sales executives we talked to believed that social media had no relevance to the sales process. Many, if not all, thought that social media was not only a passing fad but they couldn’t grasp why anyone would bother wasting time with social networking. Even today, it is surprising that many sales managers are still slow to recognize social media’s potential and that’s a mistake. Your social customer demands a new approach from sales organizations and your sales playbook needs to change! Consider these facts: Studies by Experian Marketing Services indicate that social networking now accounts for 15% of internet visits in the United States. LinkedIn, the most professionally oriented of the major sites, now has over 150 million users and they are adding close to a million new users each week. The micro-blogging platform Twitter has more than 100 million active users with more than 200 million tweets being cranked out each day. Google+ has now passed 65 million members. Facebook, while having less B2B networking relevance, should still be leveraged as a way to engage customers on the company fan page. http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 5 #1: The Sales Landscape Has Changed 86% of business buyers engage in web research independent of the sales cycle FORRESTER 2011 B2B SOCIAL TECHNOGRAPHICS
  • 6. For sales organizations to succeed in today’s social business environment, they must first accept that buyer behavior has changed! Buyer 2.0 is web savvy, informed and probably knows more about you than you know about them. In this new world, buyers start the sales process without you, which means that sellers must shift from a transactional approach to the sales process to a solution oriented, value focused, and socially connected approach. These days, most buying decisions now start, move forward, and are very often closed online or over the phone without a single face-to-face meeting. That’s a frightening thought for the sales professional who has long believed that the only way to “close a deal” is to be sitting across the table from the prospect. Salespeople must also recognize and leverage the emphasis that buyers now place on recommendations, comments and the referrals of others. In addition to great people and sales skills, salespeople must also demonstrate that they are social media savvy and have strong business acumen. In Selling to the C-Suite, authors Stephen J. Bistritz, Ed.D. and Nicholas A.C. Read conducted extensive research on what buyers want salespeople to know. The question posed was: What has to happen in meetings with salespeople for the executive to feel it was effective? http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 6 #2: What Buyers Want You to Know With the buying process now looser and more dependent on peer input, the data suggests solution providers will need to connect with prospects outside of the traditional sales funnel, in an ongoing dialog built on relevant content and real-time response BREAKING OUT OF THE FUNNEL
  • 7. The answer: 1. Demonstrated responsibility 2. Understood my business goals 3. Listened before proposing a solution 4. Displayed knowledge of my industry Your prospect expects you to understand their business and with social networking tools like LinkedIn and Twitter and business intelligence tools like InsideView, there is just no excuse for not having done your homework. We’ll get into that in more detail, but for now what you need to understand is that the days of walking in the door blind to your prospect’s issues are over. During the meeting is not the time to ask questions that you should already know the answers to. Meeting preparation is not optional. http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 7 #2: What Buyers Want You to Know
  • 8. There is often confusion about the difference between LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook and how each applies to the sales process. In a nutshell, here is how the three platforms fit. LinkedIn is your business networking tool and aids salespeople on the front end of the sales cycle. Networking, lead generation, and opportunity qualification, securing referrals and establishing business credibility in your field are just a few of the ways that you can use LinkedIn to your advantage. Facebook is more casual, conversational and personal in nature. For business, a Facebook fan page is often used by marketers to create customer loyalty and retention on the back end of the sales cycle. By cultivating loyal fans, marketing helps to ensure that your company brand remains front and center in people’s minds. Twitter is a micro-blogging tool, which means that you share messages with the people in your Twitter network that are short and concise because you only have 140 characters to use to craft your message. The real-time nature of the information being shared is a gold mine of business intelligence. You can follow your competitors to see what kinds of messages they are sending out. Or, follow the company that your prospect works for and stay on top of what kind of information they are sharing, what questions they are asking and the vendors they may be recommending. http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 8 #3: Understand the Technology
  • 9. Social selling has risks, but sitting on the sidelines is the greatest risk of all! You’ve been selling successfully for a long time, so you may be saying to yourself, why do I need to worry about social media? The answer, by now, should be obvious. Your prospects are there! They are checking out what you offer and what your competitors offer. Who do you want them to choose? Einstein was famously quoted as saying that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. Sales approaches that worked five or ten years ago are just not effective; it’s time to let them go. Yes, it will take a little up front work to establish your foundation, but it isn’t as complicated as you may think. Positioning yourself to succeed in a social selling world includes these elements: http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 9 #4: The Social Selling Approach Having a plan Defining your audience Crafting your message Picking the right tools Implementing actionable tactics consistently Measuring and tracking AND…investing in training!
  • 10. In addition to being relationship oriented and committed to serving the customer, the social salesperson is well…social. They understand that in this world, a pay-it-forward, give-first-before- expecting-an-immediate-return mindset is what sets them apart from the majority of their competitors. People still buy from people and they need to trust you. Trust takes time. Just because you have connected with someone on LinkedIn, does not mean that you’ve earned trust in the eyes of that individual. Creating a perception of trust doesn’t have to be difficult thanks to social media. Using LinkedIn or Twitter, you can share content that has value, like white papers, case studies, presentations, industry information and more. You can showcase industry experts who give credence to your business without you actually having to sell it yourself. The more you give, you more you stand to receive. Social salespeople listen before engaging. Their goal is to help to solve problems rather than pitching what they have to sell. Impatient salespeople have found out the hard way what happens when they use social media to sell. For example, you connect with someone on LinkedIn and then turn right around and send them a sales spam email. In the mildest of repercussions, you are merely removed as a connection. But annoy the wrong person and you just might find that ill-conceived sales spam is blasted to the online world for everyone to see. http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 10 #5: Traits of a Social Salesperson
  • 11. Remember that buyers are doing their homework and looking for solutions to their business problems. They search Google, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and anything else that they can find. If your ideal buyer lands on your LinkedIn page, you need to stand out. Your profile must be compelling enough for your prospect to want to know more. Make the time to clean up your profile and then commit to keeping it fresh with content that you update on a regular basis. You may have only one shot at capturing the attention of your prospect, so make the content on your profile count. Follow some basics to ensure that your profile rocks! LinkedIn Name. Your LinkedIn profile is branding you as a professional salesperson. Use your name and not the name of your company. Picture. LinkedIn’s policy is that you include a professional headshot on your profile. Engage a professional photographer or have co-workers help you by using their camera to grab the shot. Keywords. You need to rely on keywords to drive traffic to your LinkedIn profile. This may well be one of the most important fields on your profile. You have 120 characters to leverage. Think about what your prospects will search for when they have a problem. They do not search on “titles.” They might search for cloud computing, mobile applications, cell phone technology, but they do not search for account rep of anything. http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 11 #6: Your Online Presence Must Rock!
  • 12. Web sites. LinkedIn lets you showcase three websites on your profile. Do not use the generic labels such as “My Company” or “My Blog.” Always click “Other” and change the words to describe what you offer. Interested in showcasing a particular product or service on your website? Customize the URL with the name and then copy the page URL to direct your prospect to the appropriate page. Customize Your Public Profile URL. Social selling is all about personal branding and visibility. You want to secure your “name” as your profile URL if you can. For example: http://www.linkedin.com/in/barbaragiamanco Summary. This is the place to really shine! Rather than just a boring bio talking about you, focus your attention on communicating the results that customers achieve when working with you. Do you help them increase their sales by 50%? Do your services increase their efficiency and thereby reduce time spent on non-revenue producing tasks? Think about what is most important to your prospect and focus on communicating that message. Specialties. Keywords, as noted earlier, count. It means that the better your keywords are the more times your LinkedIn profile shows up in search results both inside the LinkedIn platform and external on the web. Use as many of the keywords and keyword phrases that describe what you do as you can fit in this section. Recommendations. Recommendations count, and in order to have a 100% complete profile, you must have at least three. Secure those recommendations from customers and partners. http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 12 #6: Your Online Presence Must Rock!
  • 13. Content Rules! When you add visual POP to your profile, people naturally want to know more. They may not read the text on the page, but they will scroll through your PowerPoint presentation. All the applications available in the free version can be found under the “More” tab on the navigation bar. Add an Amazon Book Reading List, Slideshare to share video, presentations and white papers or share your blog posts if you have one. Status Update. Each day update your status so you show up in the news feed of your connections and appear active on LinkedIn. Use the LinkedIn Today “News” feature to quickly find information relevant to your industry that you can share. You can also share approved white papers, press releases, case studies and more. Always include a little bit of text and the link back to the relevant article. Do this daily and people will review you as a thought leader in your field. You can showcase events and more! Join Groups. Participation in LinkedIn groups can not only give you insights into current topics and trends based on the discussions that are happening, but real-time sales opportunities reveal themselves here. People are asking what to buy and from whom. Group participation provides an opportunity to demonstrate expertise WITHOUT selling! Choose relevant groups and think about where your prospect is likely to be hanging out also. Twitter If you have a Twitter account, use the headline space to let a little of your personality shine through. Oh, and be sure to include your phone number. Make it easy for your prospect to contact you. http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 13 #6: Your Online Presence Must Rock!
  • 14. As we use tools like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, the number of people that we maintain some degree of one-to-one contact and connection with via peer networks and groups has dramatically increased in the past few years. Social sales people will use these tools to become more adept at successfully navigating the first few critical phases of the sales process: investigate and early qualify. Better information leads to better qualification of sales opportunities. And, used effectively, social networking shrinks the physical time it takes to move the opportunity to close. Social selling is about recognizing that the buying process is controlled by a better informed and more connected customer. While sales remain a relationship-driven business, the power of "who you know" is trumped by "what you know about who you know." The new social customer is demanding relevance from sales people, expecting them to know about them, their companies, and their needs before engaging. This has heightened the requirement for comprehensive sales intelligence that brings together both traditional data and social media. It is imperative that sales professionals leverage the social web to actively listen, engage, and add value to the customer conversation. Before you decide to engage with your prospect, do your homework and leverage the information in a way that leads to building rapport. How you leverage the information makes the difference between being perceived as someone who is paying attention and one who is stalking people. http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 14 #7: Intelligence is Key Who you know is trumped by what you know about who you know!
  • 15. Use social media to research, target, and connect with your ideal (pre-qualified, most likely to buy) prospects. Then track social interactions along with phone and email. Using social media in conjunction with phone and email can increase sales cycle conversion metrics such as the critical connect rate. Busy people (a category that almost unanimously includes every business executive) are less likely to respond to and engage with salespeople than ever before. According to InsideView, 92% of executives said they would not respond to a cold call or email from someone that they did not know. Create a target list of the right companies and the right prospects for you. Know which companies and titles your offering is most likely to entice, and then connect with them through personal, customized, and relevant messages rather than generic scripts. Social technology tools can make this very easy to do. In a great example, by using this approach, our colleagues at simulation technology company PAKRA gets 17 out of 20 people to accept LinkedIn invitations within 36 hours of sending them out. After their LinkedIn invitation, PAKRA prospects receive a short, personalized follow-up message that includes a link to their website. Ten out of 20 recipients respond to those personalized follow-up messages. PAKRA has tracked prospect engagement back to mentions of: Something work-related (85% of the time) A book they are reading (5% of the time) Other personal information (2% of the time) Content provided in discussion groups (1% of the time) http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 15 #8: The ROI
  • 16. Social Selling also goes beyond reaching out to prospects with relevant information to leverage personal and company social graphs. You can take advantage of the connections to which your social networks expose you. It is time for sales organizations to get on board. Industry data, metrics, and success stories prove that prospects use social media to educate themselves, connect with sellers, and make buying decisions. Leading companies figure out how to appropriately use, track, and measure their social selling initiatives and incorporate them into existing processes. http://scs-connect.com/ 227 Sandy Springs Place #D333 Atlanta, GA 30328 404-647-4925 16 #8: The ROI “Network Hardware Resale (NHR) also uses social media in conjunction with email and phone to generate meeting with the right prospects. They have quadrupled meeting acceptance rates from 15% to 60%.”
