We described Dublin City University (DCU)'s participation in the Search sub-task of the Search and Hyperlinking Task at MediaEval 2014. Exploratory experiments were carried out to investigate the utility of prosodic prominence features in the task of retrieving relevant video segments from a collection of BBC videos. Normalised acoustic correlates of loudness, pitch, and duration were incorporated in a standard TF-IDF weighting scheme to increase weights for terms that were prominent in speech. Prosodic models outperformed a text-based TF-IDF baseline on the training set but failed to surpass the baseline on the test set.

Big data analysis relies on exploiting various handy tools to gain insight from data easily. In this talk, the speaker demonstrates a data mining flow for text classification using many Python tools. The flow consists of feature extraction/selection, model training/tuning and evaluation. Various tools are used in the flow, including: Pandas for feature processing, scikit-learn for classification, IPython, Notebook for fast sketching, matplotlib for visualization.

An electronic laboratory Notebook (ELN) can be characterized as a system that allows scientists to capture the data and resources used in performing scientific experiments. This allows users to easily organize and find their data however, little information about the scientific process is recorded. In this paper we highlight the current status of progress toward semantic representation of science in ELNs.

Despite its obvious success (largest knowledge base ever built, used in practice by companies and governments alike), we actually understand very little of the structure of the Web of Data. Its formal meaning is specified in logic, but with its scale, context dependency and dynamics, the Web of Data has outgrown its traditional model-theoretic semantics. Is the meaning of a logical statement (an edge in the graph) dependent on the cluster ("context") in which it appears? Does a more densely connected concept (node) contain more information? Is the path length between two nodes related to their semantic distance? Properties such as clustering, connectivity and path length are not described, much less explained by model-theoretic semantics. Do such properties contribute to the meaning of a knowledge graph? To properly understand the structure and meaning of knowledge graphs, we should no longer treat knowledge graphs as (only) a set of logical statements, but treat them properly as a graph. But how to do this is far from clear. In this talk, I report on some of our early results on some of these questions, but I ask many more questions for which we don't have answers yet.

The large-scale analysis of scholarly artifact usage is constrained primarily by current practices in usage data archiving, privacy issues concerned with the dissemination of usage data, and the lack of a practical ontology for modeling the usage domain. As a remedy to the third constraint, this article presents a scholarly ontology that was engineered to represent those classes for which large-scale bibliographic and usage data exists, supports usage research, and whose instantiation is scalable to the order of 50 million articles along with their associated artifacts (e.g. authors and journals) and an accompanying 1 billion usage events. The real world instantiation of the presented abstract ontology is a semantic network model of the scholarly community which lends the scholarly process to statistical analysis and computational support. We present the ontology, discuss its instantiation, and provide some example inference rules for calculating various scholarly artifact metrics.

This presentation demonstrates the functionality provided by the Logical Model Designer (LMD) and Snow Owl tools, which enables terminology to be bound to the Singapore Logical Information Model. Abstract: A critical enabler in the journey towards semantic interoperability in Singapore is the Singapore "˜Logical Information Model' (LIM). The LIM is a model of the healthcare information shared within Singapore, and is defined as a set of reusable "˜archetypes' for each clinical concept (e.g. Problem/Diagnosis, Pharmacy Order). These archetypes are then constrained and composed into "˜templates' to support specific use cases. The Singapore LIM harmonises the semantics of the information structures with the terminology, using multiple types of terminology bindings, including semantic, value domain and constraint bindings. Value domain bindings are defined to both national "˜reference terminology' (used for querying nationally-collated data), as well as to a variety of "˜interface terminologies' used within local clinical systems (required to enforce conformance-compliance rules over message specifications generated from the LIM). To support the diversity of pre-coordination captured in local interface terms, "˜design patterns' are included in the LIM, based on the SNOMED CT concept model. These design patterns represent a logical model of meaning for a specific concept, and allow more than one split between the information model and the terminology model to be represented in a semantically-consistent manner. This presentation will demonstrate the "˜Logical Model Designer' (LMD) - an Eclipse-based tool that is being used to maintain Singapore's Logical Information Model. A number of features of the LMD tooling will be demonstrated, with a specific focus on how the information structure is bound to the terminology via an interface to the Snow Owl platform. Value Domains are defined as reference sets within Snow Owl and then linked to the information structures defined in the LMD. Please see our website http://b2i.sg for further information.

Everyone talks about "data-centricity," but what does that mean in practical terms. It means that you have to have a well defined ontology that can capture the information needed to describe the architecture or system you work with or want to create. An ontology is simply the taxonomy of entity classes (bins of information) and how those classes are related to each other. In this webinar, we will discuss a relatively new ontology, the Lifecycle Modeling Language (LML). LML provides the basis for Innoslate's database schema. In this webinar, we will discuss each entity class and why it was developed. Dr. Steven Dam, who is the Secretary of the LML Steering Committee, will present the details of the language and how it relates to other ontologies/languages, such as the DoDAF MetaModel 2.0 and SysML. He will also discuss the ways to visualize this information to enhance understanding of the information and how to use that information to make decisions about the architecture or system.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.

When you’re building (micro)services, you have lots of framework options. Spring Boot is no doubt a popular choice. But there’s more! Take Quarkus, a framework that’s considered the rising star for Kubernetes-native Java. It always depends on what's best for your situation, but how to choose the best solution if you're comparing 2 frameworks? Both Spring Boot and Quarkus have their positives and negatives. Let us compare the two by live coding a couple of common use cases in Spring Boot and Quarkus. After this talk, you’ll be ready to get started with Quarkus yourself, and know when to select Quarkus or Spring Boot.
