4. Lessons Learned
4.1. Knowledge
Know more working tools for translation, information connection, and team
work to support for future jobs, specifically:
SDL Trados 2014: This is the main CAT COOLS that we were being
trained to use
Trello: This is an application that helps the leader to distribute work easily
to the interns
Slack: It creates an online professional forum for the interns to discuss and
put their question for the Project manager
Skype: this application helps us hold weekly meeting easily.
Zalo: this is a chatting forum, where interns can share their experience and
help each other with simple problems.
Gmail: it is the official way for the intern’s leader to communicate with
the project manager, and to submit weekly reports.
Know how to apply knowledge of English learned at work; apply knowledge
of vocabulary and grammar to translation.
4.2. Skills
Learn teamwork skills: Through the internship, I understand that it is
difficult for me to complete successfully my work without a team spirit or
without the help of the team. Teamwork is important for the success of all
individuals and businesses. In order to have a meaningful and lifelong career, I
think I need to work well with others because good teamwork will bring many
new ideas to work and help problems to be solved well. What I especially
noticed is that members of a team feel a strong sense of belonging and deep
commitment to each other and the common goal by working together.
17. Page 13 of 22
Learn how to solve problem: From what I have been through the internship, I
realize that the ability to solve problems is a basic life skill and is essential to our
day-to-day lives, at work and at home. As I mentioned in performance part, I
felt crestfallen and negative at first. I did not know what to do and how to behave
appropriately, especially when working online with unfamiliar people. However,
I was able to overcome my difficulties and complete all the assigned tasks then
thanks to problem solving skills, which I was taught by the project manager. For
me, problem solving can be used to develop practical and creative solutions and
to show independence and initiative to employers. In order to solve the problem,
I think each person will have their own approach to solve their problems, to me I
draw out the four steps to take to solve the problems I encountered in the
internship and may face in future:
The first step is to define the problem: I myself will not be able to solve
the problem I encounter without knowing or determining what problems
we are having. Therefore, I think this is the first thing I need to do.
The second step is to brainstorm alternatives: This is one of the most
important stages of problem-solving because it requires a careful balance
of creativity and logical thinking about all possible alternatives to support
problem-solving
The third step is to choose the best strategy: After carefully reviewing all
my options, I think I should make the decision to choose the best strategy
for my problem and be consistent with my choices.
The last one is to implement my solution: I think the implementation is an
important peak of the problem-solving process. No matter how good the
preparation is, if I do not take action to solve the problem, I can never
solve it. I should draw up an action plan, share it with the appropriate
personnel, and follow through with my chosen approach.
18. Page 14 of 22
Learn adaptability Skills: For me, this skill supports a lot in work. This is the
first time to be close to the real environment, so I was at first embarrassed at
everything assigned and did not know how to face it. After learning how to
adapt, I find that it helps me to work independently or work well with a group
Learn communication skills: Through the internship, I see that
communication plays an important role in the success of individuals and
businesses. Being able to communicate effectively is one of the most
important life skills to learn and it is a most important skill. The ability to
communicate effectively with people is essential, no matter what industry I may
work in. Good communication skills are essential to allow others and myself to
understand information more accurately and quickly. To do my job effectively, I
have to discuss problems, request information, interact with others, and have
good human relations skill – these are all part of having good communication
skills that I have drawn from my internship.
Learn time management skills: Since I had never had the opportunity to
work in a real environment, I had difficulty in completing the assigned tasks on
time, and this greatly affected my workflow of the project at the first stage of my
internship. In order to overcome this problem, I was instructed by the Project
manager and leader to manage time so that I could always complete the work
with the assigned time. After learning, I realized that good time management
enables me to work smarter and get more things done in less time, even when
time is tight and pressures are high. In order to manage time well, I need to
delegate tasks, prioritize work to focus on those that are more important,
schedule tasks through making lists thing need to do, set up deadlines and stick
to it, start early to gives me time to sit, think and plan my day.
Learn how to do effective research: Research skills will help me find
important information. People always have new ideas with new things and I
19. Page 15 of 22
think I also need to research the ideas in order to have a better preparation in the
future plan that it may be applied.
Learn computer skills: During the internship, I realized that most of my
work was done on computers, so I have to master the necessary computer skills,
such as typing, scanning and printing, using software programs such as
Microsoft Office and using internet browsers or using management,
communication and translation tools. Good computer skills will help me perform
everyday tasks more quickly and efficiently. According to my research,
advanced computer skills can also count toward my gain when I apply for a job.
4.3. Qualities, attitudes and practices of trainees
Learn patience, hard work, overcome difficulties and listen to learn.
This internship gives me a lot of valuable experience and lessons. I believe
that the students themselves while still in the school should look for their own
internship opportunities to gain these experiences and lessons. Specifically, learn
that I should be confidence and initiative. Proactive is the biggest lesson and also
the first lesson that most students learn internships. Proactively getting
acquainted with people, actively learning about work at the internship,
proactively proposing and working with everyone, etc., all help me to integrate
myself faster in the new environment. Although this study is small, it will be a
valuable luggage for me to stand firm when I leave the University lecture to
really come to my chosen career. I also understand that, no matter how difficult
the job is, the trainees themselves take a serious attitude, always try to learn and
cultivate, they will always complete well the assigned work.
20. Page 16 of 22
III. SELF-ASSESSMENT AND SUGGESTIONS
1. Self-assessment
1.1. Knowledge
I feel very lucky and thankful when having the great opportunity to
practice at Computational Linguistics Center (CLC) of Vietnam National
University Ho Chi Minh City - University Of Science. Through the learning
process, I am very happy because the knowledge I have learned now has been
experienced in a very practical way, from which I also have a deeper
understanding of the work I will do in the near future. Specifically,
In term of English Language, I had a chance to practice my English, which
I only learn in theory at school. I realized that knowing English is
important because it helps a lot in work and in life. If you have English,
you can be more proactive in your work and can get higher wages. In
addition, I also found that employees who know English are more
confident in dealing with information resources in English.
I had a chance to understand more about the useful translation tools and
how they work.
More importantly, I had a chance to work as a translator and this gives me
a chance to understand more deeply about my career, about what I should
do to be a great translator in near future.
1.2. Skills
Thanks to the internship chance, I have an opportunity to learn many practical
skills far from my original intentions
I learned skills to work in group, especially asking question and listening
others.
21. Page 17 of 22
Besides that, I also learned more necessary skills to support for my future
career as excellent communication, people skills, an aptitude for problem
solving, .
Finally, being proactive in preventing possible problems and solving them
effectively are useful skills that i can use to apply for my job.
1.3. Qualities, attitudes and practices of trainees
As mentioned above, I myself encountered a lot of difficulties when I started
practicing as new about the assigned jobs, how to work via the internet or to
work with people I did not know. However, I have successfully completed the
assignments thanks to my serious, positive, professional working attitude and
thanks to a lot of perseverance, hard work and always trying my own.
2. Suggestions
2.1. About the training program
I feel very happy about my recent internship because I got to know more
friends and learned a lot of useful knowledge; however, I myself find that just
practicing through the online form is not effective. Many because face-to-face
contact is always the best choice for professional learning and helps students
manage themselves better, because without the observation of people around,
maybe some Trainees will neglect, not manage the time well and affect the other
members of the group
2.2. About organizing internships
Through my practical experience after the internship, I realized that the
knowledge of the school is very useful, but that knowledge is also much more
theoretical. The school should create many opportunities for students to be
exposed to a realistic environment so that students can observe, learn more and
22. Page 18 of 22
can see more clearly in themselves to be able to prepare necessary skills before
graduate, especially communication skills to work in groups, time management,
and English communication skills.
2.3. Other suggestions
I myself have been an intern and learned a lot of valuable experience after
internship, so I think students should look for their internship opportunities as soon as
possible, because it helps students develop knowledge, have a look at practical
environment, understand themselves, and know the strengths and weaknesses from
which to have more time to prepare for the future.
In addition, during the internship, students are familiar with the theoretical
knowledge of the school, so when walking out of the real environment, they will face
many difficulties and challenges, students should work smart and hard, ask questions,
open your heart to people for their help and do not give up though difficult to complete
the internship as well as learn valuable lessons
