2. LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of this topic, students should be able to: 1. Discuss the history and development of video technology; 2. Identify some of the basic components that produce video; and 3. Identify the various hardware components of a digital video editing system.

INTRODUCTION For those unfamiliar with Digital Video (DV) technology, the prospect of working with cameras and editing suites is daunting enough, without the added complication of teaching a whole range of complex processes to students ofdifferentages and abilities. Therefore it might be useful to start with something which offers an introduction to the language of moving image, with none of the problems associated with delicate and expensive hardware associated with digital film making and editing.
