Investment in UCD Pays off
Bringing the users into every stage of the design process is an investment of effort and other resources of the design team, which makes understanding the benefits of a user-centered design approach relevant (IDF - www.interaction-design.org)

3. It is an iterative design framework that
develops solutions to problems by
focusing on users needs and
requirements, and by applying human
factors/ergonomics, usability knowledge,
and techniques in each phase of the
design.
4.
5. What is Ergonomics?
the study of people's efficiency in their working environment.
What is Usability?
Usability is the degree to which a - software, hardware or anything
else - is easy to use and a good fit for the people who use it.
• It is a quality or characteristic of a product.
• It is whether a product is efficient, effective and satisfying for
those who use it.
Guided by ISO 9241-11

6. This framework involves users throughout
the design process and helps to enhance
effectiveness and efficiency, improves
human well-being, user satisfaction,
accessibility and sustainability by
employing both qualitative and quantitative
research methods to understand user
needs.
9. • Specify the context of use: Identify the
people who will use the product, what they
will use it for, and under what conditions will
they be used. (i.e personas, user journey)
• Specify requirements: Identify any business
requirements or user goals that must be met
for the product to be successful.
10. • Create design solutions: This part of the
process may be done in stages, by building
prototypes followed by complete design.
• Evaluate designs: by allowing real users to
use the prototypes or beta version of same
product helps to integrate quality testing into
software development.
11.
12. Designs are based on thorough understanding of
users, tasks and environments.
UCD wholly targets user experience and as
such involves researchers from various
background such as ethnographers,
psychologists, software and hardware
engineers, domain experts, stakeholders
and users
