IntroductionAbout meAbout presentation
Born out of the need to engage students more and the need for studyNot making revision a drag, but something to look forward toWalking out of school on a Friday
Making revisionachievable for all students – not just top students.Caters to multiple intelligences theory for the different learning needs of studentsHopefully used in all KLAsMuch of this was done with Year 12, but can be adapted to suit all year groups
If we expect creativity and critical thinking– then we really need to model thatAlways need to be showcasing new ways of learning, and thinking and doing
The first thing that I had great success with is colour coding the units/notes that we taught.Printing on coloured paper, students used highlighters for these coloursHelped significantly with student organization and filing
Film. Two wordsFirst word.Using aspects of drama as a tool –Charades with film techniques, characters – what possibilities can you see in your subject area for the physicality of performance?
Demonstration of understanding of the unitComingup with a song/parody of what they have learntDoes it have the academic rigiour of an essay? Well maybe not, but it is still a valid tool to show learning,Students really connect with the structure
Group work and stations - often teacher selected and mixed ability – opportunity for different students to work together.
Don’t under estimate the power of:Drawsomething/pictionaryGreat for higher order thinkingSymbolism/representation and introductory tasks
Technique/vocab bingoKey wordsSyllabus dot points – the possibilities are endless – students are continually familiarizing themselves with important skills and ideas, just in new forms and ways.
Belonigngbrunch – once a fortnight – sometimes I would provide food – an important time for teenagers physically – always come back to thinking – what more can we do to meet them where they are at?
Students teach the class – give them a little independence and they will run and run and run
Brainstormcreative and different ways to study How can they best use their technology for goodWhat study skills have you intentioanllly been sharing with them?
Why it has worked for me – disengaged boys, mixed ability, has saved me from the “end of term nothing to do, need to keep students in seats”
Students will take advantage of boundariesSo it is really important to be clear and firm in your expectations and ideas around these sorts of things.
They will go crazy for the rewardsBe resourceful with your rewards
Making and valuing class time, show them that this is a priority, and again, model it.
Journeying with them –social media fast
For a lot of students, its about bringing them over the line – they are so close – how can we help them access the diamonds?
And if all else fails, tell the students you are doing an advantage for them…
