How can we
understand the Bible?
Two types of Biblical
criticism
Why don’t we just read it?
• The many different kinds of texts have different
purposes:
– History records facts
– Poetry expresses emotions
– Parables teach lessons

• Texts were written at a different time
– People had different knowledge and values
– People had different lifestyles

This means we need to learn other information
to inform our reading of the Bible
Two different types of Biblical criticism

• Form Criticism: understanding the type
of writing
• Narrative Criticism: understanding the
elements of the story
Form Criticism
• Form Critics ask:
– What type of text is this ?
– What are the features of this text type?

• They look for:
– Structure of the text
– Rules and Conventions of the text type
– Features of the text type
Narrative Criticism
• Narrative Critics ask:
– What is the world like within this text?
– How do the parts go together to tell the story?

• They look for:
– Author’s purpose and audience
– Characters and Setting
– Plot and themes
Example: The Lost Son
• Read story: Luke 15: 11-32

11Jesus

continued: “There was a man who had two sons. 12The younger one said to his father, ‘Father,
give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.
13“Not

long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there
squandered his wealth in wild living. 14After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in
that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of
that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that
the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.
17“When

he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father's hired men have food to spare,
and here I am starving to death! 18I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I
have sinned against heaven and against you. 19I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make
me like one of your hired men.’ 20So he got up and went to his father.
“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he
ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.
21“The

son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy
to be called your son’
22“But

the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his
finger and sandals on his feet. 23Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate.
24For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to
celebrate.
25“Meanwhile, the older son was in
dancing. 26So he called one of the

the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and
servants and asked him what was going on. 27‘Your brother has
come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and
sound.’
28“The older brother became angry and
him. 29But he answered his father, ‘Look!

refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with
All these years I've been slaving for you and never
disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my
friends. 30But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home,
you kill the fattened calf for him!’
31“

‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to
celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and
has been found.'"

★
Form Criticism
• What kind of text is this?
– Parable: a story told to teach a lesson

• What are the features of this text type?
– a story, not historical fact
– a comparison; right and wrong responses are shown

– contains a crisis; in which someone learns something

• How does this affect my understanding of the text?
– When I read the story I will try to identify the comparisons (the
different responses and which is right and which is wrong) and the
crisis (what lessons were learnt).
Narrative Criticism
• What is the world like in this story?
– Set in New Testament times
– Importance of the Elder son
– Attitudes towards forgiveness: cultural focus on justice, rather
than mercy
– Values about masculinity: men are not emotional and pride is
very important

• How do the parts go together?
– Son asks for something that isn’t his; wastes it living a life of which
his father wouldn’t approve; goes back home when he has no
other option; father forgives him and welcomes him home; other
son is upset

• How does this affect my understanding of the text?
– When I read the story I will try to identify how the world of the story
is different to the world I live in and see if the meaning could be
different because of this
Putting it all together
• The major issue is repentance before God and God's
willingness to forgive

• In this parable the father breaks with accepted cultural
codes by initiating the reconciliation with his son
• In Jewish thinking a father should not divide the estate too
early. Nevertheless, in this parable the father grants the son's
request
• The note of joy about the son's return is crucial in the
passage, as is the father's restoration of sonship privileges. The
son has come from destitution to complete restoration. That is
what God's grace does
• The parable has two major points:
– First, repentance means an absolute reversal of status. The lost
son has become a family member again
– Second, others should have joy when the remorseful person
returns
