What was your perception when we
said we haven’t prepared anything?

               ABS 22
When you change
the way you look
  at things, the
 things you look
   at change.

           ABS 33
What is Perception?
 A process by which individuals organize and
interpret their sensory impressions in order to
  give meaning to their environment.
 People’s behavior is based on their perception
of what reality is, not on reality itself.
 The world as it is perceived is the world that is
  behaviorally important.

                        ABS 44
Perception
 What is Perception?
 How we view and interpret the events
and situations in the world about us.

 Why is it Important?
 Because people’s behavior is based on
their perception of what reality is, not
    on reality itself.

                     ABS 55

Causes of Behavior

 Internal factors –
  Personal
  characteristics that
  cause behavior
  (e.g., ability, effort)
 External factors –
  Environmental
  characteristics that
  cause behavior
  (e.g., task
  difficulty, good/bad
  luck) 99
Frequently Used Shortcuts in Judging Others

 Selective Perception - People selectively interpret what
they see on the basis of their
   interests, background, experience, and attitudes

 Halo Effect- Drawing a general impression about an
individual on the basis of a single characteristic

  Contrast Effects - Evaluation of a person’s characteristics
that are affected by comparisons with other people recently
encountered who rank higher or lower on the same
   characteristics

                                                              10
Frequently Used Shortcuts in Judging
              Others
 Projection: The tendency to attribute
     one’s own characteristics to other
     people.

 Stereotyping - Judging someone on
the basis of one’s perception of the
group to which that person belongs –
a prevalent and often useful, if not
     always accurate, generalization

                                             11
