In these slides I have explained the UX design process used during carpooling App. These slides have been sanitized to make shareable. Hope this will give a clear idea about the UX design process.
1. CAR Pooling App
Project Requirement
Commute has always been a problem in big cities including Bangalore. One of the solution to solve
this problem is carpooling. It’s a well-known solution but not a successful one.
Can design and technology help make carpooling a more desirable and viable option for commuters?
Success Factors: Using the mobile app, the user should be able to easily search for people interested
in carpool. The app should be user friendly, minimalistic and yet information rich.
Assignment Completion Time : 24 hrs
3. During user research I have noticed, in India personal
cars has a huge emotional attachment with car owners
& family members. It’s difficult to convince them
sharing there car with others without much value add.
Many carpooling app runs lack of active users. That is a
major reason behind it’s not being so successful. Also
need to conduct a lot of promotions to attract people
for car pooling.
By using OBD II tracking system we can easily track
fuel expense & calculate the exact profit per trip. That
can be a lot of value add to choose carpooling for extra
benefits while traveling to your destination. Also
people prefer carpooling for social and environment
cause. We can make car pooling a viable option by
understanding car owners & co-passengers likings,
behaviors, preferences etc…
Summary
We understand your concerns.
We value your comfort.
We care for our environment.

Attendees for user interview
To understand the current scenario and user mental model about carpooling. I would like to conduct user research on participants from different sectors. This will help me to
define a solution which can satisfy users need by making carpooling a feasible option for communication.
This user research will focus on how users think and act while travelling & their opinion about car pooling as a solution.
Users Male Female Total Participants
Car owners 1 1 2
Regular commuters ( Short distance ) 1 1 2
Regular commuters ( Long distance ) 1 1 2
Old commuters ( 50 + ) 1 1 2
Students 1 1 2
Total Participants 10

8. Car Owners
User Interview Findings
• People prefer travelling safely with known people
• People prefer travelling with similar mindset people
• People don’t like dependencies, waiting for someone
• It is more comfort, less expensive and feels good travelling with friends
• Short distance travelers /Bike owners prefer their own travel arrangements instead of carpooling.

Co-Passengers
• Lack of awareness & experience with carpooling
• Safety concerns while driving with unknown people specially for lady passengers
• Many people prefer car pooling for environmental cause to reduce traffic and pollution .
• Bikers don’t prefer car pooling especially if it there travelling nearby location.
• Most of the apps have very less active members. That makes difficult to find same mentality people.
• Some apps are boring like zify car polling app. It’s login process takes more than 5 min to login, also many functionalities don’t work properly.
• It’s annoying if co-passengers treat car owner as cab driver
• It’s irritating if someone asks for unscheduled stops without prior update.
• It’s an additional responsibility to update everyone about the carpooling
• It’s an additional responsibility for money collection. Don’t feel comfortable asking money for travels to their friends & colleagues
• Additional responsibility to pickup and drop all the passengers at door step.
• More passengers make car unclean , need more cleaning and maintenance expense.
• Difficult to get same mentality people
• Feels good travelling with friends

- Your profit = (Earning per km) - (Expense for km) = total profit on a particular ride
Fuel expense per km = 7 Rupees
Earning per km = 40 Rupees
Profit = (40-7) Rupees = 33 Rupees/Km
Total Earning = 22km x 33 Rupees = Rs. 726 (INR) profit on this ride
Maintenance expense = Rs. 30 (INR)
Total profit = You earning Rs. 696 (INR) on your ride to office by car pooling (critical driving factor)
Km/fuel expenses data and GPS location can be tracked from OBD II tracker in car

12. Competitive Benchmarking
Avijit Chinara
UX Designer
Competitive benchmarking is a process to set benchmark for your offerings by comparing successful
competitors who provides similar type of service or products.
* To understand the current offerings by current carpooling apps to set the benchmark, I did a competitive benchmarking on Zify, ePoolers, Bla Bla Car, Orahi
After conducting competitive benchmarking got to know. Most of the apps
face a big problem that is lack of active members. Also some apps like zify
carpool user interface is very slow and login process takes more than 3
min, which is not acceptable for a better user experience. But some apps like
orahi carpool added considerable user friendly feature to make car pooling
effortless.
To design a better solution than these apps needs to understand there
features and offerings and set a benchmark for our app functionalities and
offerings.
* Considering time provided for assignment. This is not a full fledge
competitive analysis but just to show as a part of design process .
