Shows # of 2-Core Packs Needed
Based on # of Cores per Processor
8 or Fewer Cores per CPU = Same Price
Cost increases when >1 CPU with >8 cores each

5. What It Really Means
Minimum Cost is 8 of the 2-Core Packs
16 total cores
Same Cost to License:
1U server with single quad-core CPU
2U server with dual 8-core CPUs

6. Example Comparison
Dell PowerEdge R310
Single quad-core CPU = 8 x 2-core packs
Dell PowerEdge R720
Dual 8-core CPUs = 8 x 2-core packs
Dell PowerEdge R730
Dual 12-core CPUs = 12 x 2-core packs

7. Virtualization Licensing
Datacenter = Unlimited VMs
Standard = Up to 2 VMs
Need more?
• License as if additional server per 2 VMs
R730 Example with 4 VMs
Dual 12-core CPUs
Need 24 total 2-core packs
• 12 for physical server and first 2 VMs
• 12 for additional 2 VMs

Hello and welcome to, "Answers to Your IT Nightmares - Windows Server 2016 Licensing Tips"
Many of our customers are concerned about the new licensing structure for Windows Server 2016 and how much it will cost them.
In this short webinar, we’ll put your minds at ease and breakdown how this new licensing structure works so you can make the best informed decisions for your organization.

I for one find this new structure to be intimidating. Where do we get started, Chad?
Well, let’s start by reviewing the general changes.
It’s important to note the licensing really hasn’t changed as much as most think at first glance.
First, the Standard and Datacenter have moved to core-based licensing.
Other editions of Windows Server 2016 like Essentials and MultiPoint Server, are still using a processor licensing scheme.
This chart shows how many 2-core packs you’ll need based on the number of cores per processor for Standard and Datacenter licensing.
As you can see, the pricing is the same unless you have 2 or more CPUs with more than 8 cores per processor.
The cost of licensing goes up when you have more than one processor and each of the processors has more than 8 cores.
That means no matter what, the minimum cost to license a server is 8 2-core packs for 16 total cores.
For instance, a 1U single-socket server with 4 total cores will cost the same to license as a server with dual 8-core CPUs.

Interesting. Could you show a side-by-side comparison, Chad?
Sure, Amber.
In this example we have a Dell PowerEdge R310, R720, and R730.
The R310 has a single 4-core CPU so it will need 8 of the 2-core packs.
The R720 has dual 8-core CPUs so it will also need 8 of the 2-core packs.
The R730 has dual 12-core CPUs so it will need 12 of the 2-core packs.

Thank you, That comparison was very helpful, Chad. Do you have any other key information for us about Windows Server 2016 licensing?
Yeah, Amber. I want to point out how the licensing works for virtualization.
Datacenter licensing still provides an unlimited number of VMs.
With Standard, you receive licensing for up to 2 VMs when you license a physical server.
To spin up more than 2 VMs with Standard, you’re required to license them as if they’re an additional physical server.
So that means if you want 4 VMs hosted on the R730 we just showed, you’d need 24 of the 2-core packs;
12 for the physical server and first 2 VMs then 12 more for an additional 2 VMs.
Thank you, Chad!
