Chapter 3 Perception and the Self in Interpersonal Communication
The Self in Interpersonal Communication Self Concept- your self image, or the view you have of who you are. Your self-concept develops from 4 sources: Others’ Images-How significant others see you. Social Comparisons- How you compare to your peers Cultural Teachings- How you fulfill the teachings of your culture. Self Evaluation- How you evaluate your own feelings and behaviors.
The Self in Interpersonal Communication ,[object Object]
This is explained by a model called the Johari Window, which consists of 4 basic areas, that represents a different part of yourself.
Open self- Information about yourself that you and others know
Hidden self- Information about yourself that you know but others don’t know.
Blind self- Information about yourself that you don’t know but others do know.
Unknown self- Information about yourself that neither you nor others know.,[object Object]
There are 5 Techniques for increasing your self esteem.
Attack Self-Destructive Beliefs
Seek out Nourishing People
Work on projects that will result in successes
Remind yourself of your successes
Secure Affirmation,[object Object]
Perception in Interpersonal Communication Perception- The process by which you become aware of objects, events, and people through your senses.  Interpersonal perception can be separated into 5 stages: ,[object Object]

  • 17.
  • 18. Assignment #2 Go to the class discussion board and answer the following questions on blackboard What do you think is the most important stage in perception and why? Describe a time when you used the Interpretation-Evaluation stage to stereotype someone or something. Comment on another classmate’s post.
  • 19. Impression Formation Impression Formation- The process by which you perceive another person and ultimately come to some kind of evaluation or interpretation of this person. There are 6 significant processes that influence the way you perceive another person and come to some kind of interpretation of him/her.
  • 20. Impression Formation 6 Processes: Self-fulfilling Prophecy- a prediction that comes true because you act on it as if it were true. Implicit Personality Theory- the system of rules that tells you which characteristics go together. Perceptual Accentuation- Leads you to see what you expect or want to see Primacy-Recency- We give more importance to the person’s first impression (Primacy) or the impression that is most recent (Recency) Consistency- Maintaining balance among attitudes. Example: I expect someone I like to like me. Attribution- the process of assigning causation or motivation to a person’s behavior.
