2. How Defibrillator Training Can Prepare
You for an Emergency
• Cardiac arrest is known to kill more than one thousand people every day and
more than one million people every year globally. Sudden cardiac arrest can
happen anywhere and to anyone. It is possible that you will find yourself in a
situation where the person next to you experiences cardiac arrest, and this is
where time and defibrillator training matter most. Early defibrillation is the
only cure to help a person regain consciousness after he or she has
experienced cardiac arrest. Unfortunately, more than two third of the
population do not know how to use an automated external defibrillator since
they have never had any sort of basic life support training, defibrillator
training or resuscitation training.

3. How Defibrillator Training Can Prepare
You for an Emergency
• It is said that if you find yourself in a situation where a person near you is
experiencing a heart attack you need to call for an ambulance, keep the
casualty calm and ask him or her to rest in the “W” position, and use an
external automated defibrillator (AED) if his or her heart stops beating. When
a person experiences sudden cardiac arrest, it means that there has been a
blockage in his or her heart that interrupts the flow of oxygenated blood to it.
When this happens, the heart muscles can no longer function since there is no
oxygen, and it stops beating. What keeps it beating are small cells called
pacemakers that send electric signals to the heart to beat. When it stops
beating you can use an AED and your defibrillator training to shock the
casualty. This sends electric signals to the pacemakers to start the heartbeat
again.

4. How Defibrillator Training Can Prepare
You for an Emergency
• Using an AED is not that hard since most of them come with easy
instructions, helpful light indicators and user friendly manuals. However, there
are certain things that you must and must not do while using one and in an
emergency situation, it is quite impossible to read the instructions since there
is usually no time to do so. This is why defibrillator training is highly
recommended in every basic life support program.
• You can find a defibrillator in any place that has mass gatherings such as
shopping malls, airports, football grounds, train and bus stations and office
complexes. There are many times when a casualty can be saved since there is
an AED at hand, but unfortunately, most casualties cannot be saved because
no one in the area knows how to use one. This is why basic life support
training such as defibrillator training and even resuscitation training is
extremely important.
