Good afternoon and welcome to:How to Stay Relevant: Working w/o a full-time jobMy name is Stephanie Reed and I am the Assistant Director of Cooperative Education and Career Services at Cabrini CollegeThe goals of this session are as follows:
I’d like to start by telling you what qualifies me to present this info to you? Besides, my experience and training in career counseling, before I was hired by Cabrini College I had 2 long periods of unemployment during my career. In each instance I was unemployed for more than a year.To put this presentation into context for you, I’m going to share a little bit about my career path. So, throughout this presentation, I will mention some of the things I did during my own unemployment to hopefully make this presentation more realistic for you.
These are ways to sustain or develop your marketability:Provide examples for creating a personal brand:Create business cardsStart a professional Blog (If you are a good writer):A blog is specialized website that focuses on a particular subject. It can include news, analysis, commentary etc. A way to showcase your expertise and knowledge of your industry or profession.
--Gov’t and service jobs are the big places to get jobs these days.--The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has identified healthcare, gov’t and energy as growing industries!(USA Today 3/24/09; Cauchon, Dennis)One way to get into those industries is to Seek out professional organizations within government, non-profit and energy. There are “Green Jobs” being created within Food systems, Energy Production and energy conservation, as well as weatherization and sustainability. You should research those areas and be aware of those buzz words.A great Resource for finding work in the “green “ industry is: the Idiot’s Guide to Green Careers. It really breaks down where and the jobs are and what type of work it is.
Use this time to strategically plan the rest of your life!! It all might work out according to plan…or it could lead to something totally unexpected, but a great second career! Here are some successful careertransitioners:Ben Stein, Jerry Springer and John Grisham!
*****Our current job outlook Forces people to look harder at what they really want to do instead of following a standardizedpathBecause of an aging population and, the poor economic situation these jobs are forecasted for growth! *** Reported in Time magazine (May, 2009)It has also been reported in the last couple of quarters that start ups are on the rise! Gov’t funding is available, so this presents opportunity for job seekers, to either branch out on their own, or seek work for smaller start up ventures.
Remember: Operate as if you DO have a full-time job!!! Keep things in perspective and stay motivated! Tune out the outsiders….you know what your goal is so stay positive that you will achieve it!Start ASKING AUDIENCE QUESTIONS/ENGAGE THEM!--You should be logged on DAILY! Using LinkedIn and Facebook but professionally!!--Be proactive; operate as if you already have a job (Finding one)--During down time, read relevant literature (I spent time in Barnes and Noble, reading and writing)--Find ways to generate job leads and income simultaneously
