2. ALTERNATIVE MUSICHISTORYO
“Indie”, meaning individual, is often the phrase used
to refer to the genre of alternative music. First
created in 1950/60s, the popularity of the genre did
not grow until the 1980s and still today it very much
sticks to it’s roots of bands playing intimate
underground style gigs. It has a small fan base and
many influential artists who are known by all within
the genre.

4. The Libertines are a British band formed in 1997 and the are
extremely well known with their work influencing other music from
bands such as Arctic Monkeys. There is a lot of controversy
surrounding this band due to their reputation of being heavy drug
users and bad people. Front man Peter is very heavily featured in
the media due to his previous relationship with Kate Moss and his
criminal record. This constant coverage has caused a lot of
exposure for the band so they are extremely recognisable and a
band of high interest as you never now what may have happened.
They also have a large fan base and lot of interest due to their
recent comeback after a 10 year hiatus from 2004.
5. Jamie T is one of the most appreciated artists in the alternative
genre. His original style music and recent return to the genre has
caused a huge growth in popularity and he is now extremely
recognised and admired by any. He is representative of fans of the
genre and their stereotypical lifestyle due to the fact they admire
and look up to him. Throughout music videos, magazine images
and interviews he is portrayed as quite scruffy yet always veery
happy. He regularly has deep sunken eye, portraying tiredness
which represents the lifestyle of the genre. He also has teeth
missing and is portrayed as a stereotypical drug user or previous
drug user which is how fans and artists of this genre are
represented. He creates a very strong brand and is recognised by
the majority.
6. ALTERNATI
E
IN THE UK
CHARTSAfter looking through the UK Official Top 40 and the UK album
charts it became apparent to me that my chosen genre of
Indie/Alternative music is certainly not prominent, intact it does not
occur through these charts once. This shows the fact there is a very
small niche market and its’ levels of popularity are very minor in
comparison to the pop genre. Although there is a very small market,
this could be used to my advantage as due to this there are few
magazines of this genre currently available so fans would
appreciate my new publication targeting them and catering to their
desires.
