4. Past Perfect Continuous Tense
Usage:
•To talk about an event which started in the past and continued for some specific
time in the past. However, not continued till present moment.
Note:
•The event is over in the past and was in action for some time.
•Puts emphasis on duration of completion.
•Use to show action in progress in past until another event occurred.
5. Past Perfect Continuous Tense Syntax
Positive
Subject + had been + verb(ing)
Negative:
Subject + had not been + verb(ing)
6. Past Perfect Continuous Tense Examples
Positive sentences:
•They had been talking for over an hour before Tony arrived
•The boys had been quarreling for half an hour when we arrived home.
•The road was wet because it had been raining.
•She said she knew Charlie had been lying to her.
•I had been running for an hour before I twisted my ankle.
•For how many hours had Fred been painting the house when the ladder fell?
•How long had the player been playing before he scored?
7. Past Perfect Continuous Tense Examples
Negative Sentences:
•Mary hadn't been waiting for longer than 10 minutes.
•He said he wasn't tired because he hadn't been working that day.
•If it hadn't been raining, we would have played football.
•If I hadn't been studying all night, I would have problems with this test now.
•I had not been crying for such a silly reason.
•She had not been working
8. Past Perfect Continuous Tense Notes:
•Apply all rules and exceptions to convert a simple verb into ‘ing’ form (which we
learned in class of present continuous and present perfect continuous tense)
9. Past Perfect Tense Usage
Usage:
•To talk about an event which happened in the past. It ended with another past
action.
Note:
•Puts emphasis on event instead of duration.
•It can be used interchangeably with Past Perfect Continuous Tense.

Positive
Subject + had + Verb(-ed)/ Irregular Verb Past Participle
Negative:
Subject + had +not + Verb(-ed)/ Irregular Verb Past Participle
Subject + had +never+ Verb(-ed)/ Irregular Verb Past Participle
11. Past Perfect Tense Examples
Positive sentences:
•She had just left the scene when the ambulance arrived.
•I thought I had met her before, but I was wrong.
•Had you had your dinner?
•Had she withdrawn her money?
•If we had called ahead, we would not have needed to wait so long for a table.
•We had just called home when my mom texted us about returning the car.
•She had visited several doctors before she found out what the problem was with her hand.
12. Past Perfect Tense Examples
Negative Sentences:
•They had not eaten for five hours.
•I didn't know who he was. I had never seen him before.
•I had never seen such a beautiful sunset before I went to the island.
•We were not able to stay overnight at the hotel since we had not reserved a room in advance.
•She had never been to the symphony before last night.
•She had never got so much cold before.
•They had not submitted their applications.
