- September 7, 2011 Online events – who has been to one? Good? Bad? Did you stay the whole time? Did you sneak a few emails? With falling attendances and rising costs, JISC RSC YH, who run a lot of events had to find another way. I will show you how we looked at the key differences between online and F2F – etiquette, interaction, technical issues and learning styles And how we planned it out and what happened And then you can have a play We ended up by saying – it’s online unless……
- September 7, 2011 No food no accommodation (but what about the presenter and the delegates…….) no travel (but we had one person turn up at the office….) No invoices (you guessed it, someone sent us a bill for presenting!) no equipment (get the picture?) So there are a lot of similarities. We found the key differences we had to cope with were:- practice – the need for trial sessions to check out connectivity (java and flash!) and to train up presenters staffing – you need at least three staff to check the chat pane, help with connections and not panic! continuity – pre and post event activities make it a better experience (maybe with F2F too?)
- September 7, 2011 mikes and headphones are the work of the devil! Check every time they work – for everybody. don’t be alarmed if the first 5 minutes are spent getting everyone connected, play some music, keep calm and keep everyone informed use an intro session – we will show ours later – and get the delegates to have a play answer questions in chat, but keep the flow One mike at a time or it is chaos as much interaction as you can where appropriate, but isn’t that good teaching? make sure material is available after – or ideally before
- September 7, 2011 practice session is vital, but don’t expect anyone to attend….. make sure presenters can connect and know the tools. And their mike works be wired in for presenters if possible. Presenters need admin rights on Windows Presentations must be uploaded record presentations in case of problems? don’t panic
- September 7, 2011 use the tools to encourage interaction use breakouts to encourage delegate interaction, but have a facilitator in each room to report back use videos, webtours and application sharing lots of breaks from powerpoint!

- September 7, 2011 It’s the future, get used to it! Learners like the flexibility, our delegates like not having to travel. Good for the planet – beats waiting in traffic or for a bus Won’t save any time but maybe some money
