Analysis of film posters
The top of the poster is filled with reviews, from different institutions. It has been specifically been positioned and sized in this way so that it attracts their intended audience. It is relying on word to mouth. The biggest quotes states ‘ possibly the scariest movie ever made’ this may encourage members of the public to challenge this quote. The image is grainy and looks like a CCTV image, they are pointing at something that is not visible in the poster. This conveys to the audience that the villain in this film is something supernatural because it is not visible to the audience. Also the camera angle gives a real life effect, impacting the audience emotions even further. The title font is very simple as not to steal attention from the main image but it still stands out because it is all in capitals and the white stands out against the fire in the background. A rhetorical question has been placed on top of the film name. It creates realism and incorporates it into the horror genre, which creates suspense and makes the public want to watch this film. It may also evoke fear or paranoia on the public, which would make them emotionally involve. Under the name of the film it states ‘Don’t see it alone’, this suggests that the film is very scary which would appeal to but it is also a marketing technique to encourage more people to view the film in cinemas together. The release date is at the bottom of the poster, is red in color which contrasts with the background, this makes it more noticeable.
The tag line used on the poster firstly gives a background to the story and gives an overview of the narrative. This shows to the audience that the film is a zombie horror. The tag line could also have religious connotations as it sounds like a bible passage that could be describing the apocalypse. http://www.scribd.com/doc/45139534/Dawn-Of-The-Dead-%E2%80%93-Poster-Analysis The image takes up the left three quarters of the poster. The crooked posture of the people immediately establishes the genre of the film is horror, as it is an image of the sun rising at dawn and the people are not portrayed as human but as zombies. The credit block, which blends into the bottom half of the background, acknowledges the cast and crew involved in the production so the target audience can see whether a reputable actor or director etc are involved with the film. The names of the production and distribution companies are shown so that they can stake their claim in the films revenue as well as advertise their company on the official media products. The official website for the film is stated under the credit block. This is so that the film can generate more interest through other media technologies. The zombies bodies are stretched which could have connotations of blood dripping. It could also be symbolic of the horror genre, and suggests that the audience this is aimed at enjoy blood and gore. This teaser poster states an official release date, which is at the bottom of the poster; making it the last thing the target audience look at and remember. This indicates that the audience will have to be proactive to find out more information about the film and look out for more information or media, such as the trailer of the film.
It is clear from the poster that the character shown is the main character is also the victim in this storyline. The film has followed the stereotypical horror convention of having a female victim as they are seen as weaker than men and therefore powerless against the villain. Her facial expression coveys pain, like the hands are torturing her and also a sense that she is possessed. These elements attract the target audience of a horror film because some of the most iconic horror films. The female character seems to come across as an average individual by her dress code, makeup; which creates further realism, to the extent that they put themselves in her position, The hands are the component that conveys to the target audience that the villain in this film is something paranormal because they appear inhuman. They are grasping at the female and pulling her down into the fire, which emphasises hellfire and pain. The orange and red tones of the fire are a contrast to the other dark colours and therefore the fire becomes one of the main focuses of the poster. The tagline reads ‘Christine Brown has a good job.....she’s going to hell.’ This is a hook for the target audience because it already supplies them with lots of questions such as ‘Why is she going to hell?’. This makes the audience becomes more involved as they are beginning to find out more about her just by the poster. The setting in the background is an average suburban home which once again heightens the target audience’s fear as it is another reminder of how average the victim is. This means that the audience can relate to this character and thus they become more involved in her situation and feel more empathy for her. The house is surrounded by darkness which suggests that it is the victims house as darkness signifies evil and the unknown that is lurking which you cannot see the The title font is very simple as not to steal attention from the main image but it still stands out because it is all in capitals and the white stands out against the fire in the background. The credit block acknowledges the cast and crew involved in the production so the target audience can see whether a reputable actor or director etc are involved with the film. This is a teaser poster as it says ‘coming soon’ rather than stating an official release date. This indicates that the audience will have to be proactive to find out more information about the film and look out for more information or media, such as official posters and trailers, of the film.
