2. Fort Sumter The Battle at Fort Sumter was the first time the South indicated they were willing to fight for federal property. While there were no casualties it was a definite threat to the North who surrendered Fort Sumter. Both sides began to see that the conflict would not be solved without bloodshed. 3. First Battle of Bull Run Also known as First Manassas Location: Manassas, Virginia Victory: Confederates Date: July 21, 1861 Total Casualties: 4,878 The First battle of bull run was caused when the Union army went offensive and attacked the confederates. Despite General-in-Chief Winfield Scotts argument that his troops were not adequately trained, public pressure was finally getting to him. On July 21st, 1861, he commanded General Irvin McDowell to attack the confederates leading to a Confederate victory. The Civil War had begun!
4. Battle of Shiloh The battle of shiloh was the first major battle of the Civil War. Up to this time, it became the bloodiest day and the bloodiest two days in American history. While there was a Union victory, both sides realized how bloody the war was going to be. 5. Battle of Antietam More Americans died on September 17, 1862, than on any other day in the nation's military history. McClellan’s performance was looked down upon by many and many blamed him for such a big confederate loss. He was eventually moved from command. The victory gave Lincoln confidence and soon after he established the emancipation proclamation. 6. Siege of Vicksburg The Union attacked Vicksburg in attempts to gain control of ports it had along the Mississippi River. Not only did the Union army pull off a victory, the Confederates also surrendered the city to the Union. 7. Battle of Gettysburg Led by George Meade, the Battle of Gettysburg was the largest and most costly battle in American history. It is now known as the turning point of the Civil War for the Union Army. Despite the numerous casualties, the Union was finally able to see a close end to the war.
