Discussion of the 3rd chapter of 2nd peter by elder don ellis
1. 2Pet 1:1, "Through the righteousness of God."
God promised this faith through Habakkuk
(2:4). He was righteous and kept his promise.
All the elect does not receive this. This is
the faith in the blood of Christ.
2nd Pet 2:1-4, Peter writes to a people that
had a pure mind and needs to stir it up. We
get the pure mind of faith through the Holy
Ghost, which gave them this mind, purifying
their hearts through faith in Christ.
2nd Peter 3rd Chaper:
Verses 2-6: These people have forgotten
what was spoken to them by the apostles and
prophets. If God seems to be slow in
fulfilling his word, they, and we, begin to
doubt, scoff, looking at the way it is and has
been that way a long time. We become
willingly ignorant of the past things that have
happened that God brought about. Nobody
believed Noah as he preached about the sins
of the people of God and the flood came as
promised and the world of created flesh
perished and the earth was not destroyed but
was changed.
2. Verse 7: "But the heavens and the earth
wh ich are new, by the same word are kept in
store, reserved unto fire against the Day of
Judgment and perdition of ungodly men." As
we have now the promise of God that a day of
judgment is approaching, it is God's merciful
way to always warn and teach h is people
sending out men to labor. Many of those
servants of God became martyrs. Before the
captivity in Babylon, many years passed
through to the prophecies of Isaiah and
Jeremiah as they pleaded with God's people
and were persecuted for preaching. The
longsuffering of God becomes apparent as the
passing of time before the judgment came.
Mathew 23:37-38 reads, "Oh Jerusalem,
Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and
stonest them that are sent unto thee, how
often would I have gathered thy children
together, even as a hen gathereth her
chickens under her wings, and ye wOLild not!
Behold, YOLir house is left unto you desolate."
This explains the one-day or a thousand years
in God's sight and his love for his people and i.
also recognizing that by our stubborn nature,
3. he is willing to labor and not willing any should
perish. Now some men count this as slackness
and take advantage of his longsuffering and
count it as salvation. "God though is long
suffering toward usward not willing any
should perish" - in my words, perish from his
gospel kingdom - "but come to repentance."
God is not pleased with us in his church with
its many factions, long standing grudges, etc.
but would desire for us to come to him for
protection from Satan, the cause of all these
splits.
Verse 10: "But the day of the Lord will come
as a thief in the night..." Those that doubt his
coming in Spirit, he will seem as a thief in the
night. His children that watch, listen and
obey, they will detect his presence coming
near. 2Pet 1:16, "For we have not followed
cunningly devised fables, when we made known
unto you the power and coming of our Lord
Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his
majesty." Now Jesus did not complete a
journey to arrive there. He was already
there but he appeared in a different form
r~-
4. and with great power and things immediately
changed. So it is in the 3rd chapter.
Now the heavens and earth, what are
they according to the bible? Isaiah 1:2,
"Hear, 0 heavens, and give ear, 0 earth:
for the Lord hath spoken, I hath
spoken, I have nourished and brought up
children, and they have rebelled against
me." Deut. 32:1, "Give ear, 0 ye
heavens, and I will speak; and hear, 0
earth, the words of my mouth." Here it
is obvious that the heaven and earth is
God's elect disobedient people that he is
being longsuffering with and is going to
change to a new heaven and earth. The
heaven is their attitude and thinking and
the earth is their arrogant, self
righteous walk in their lives. Much like
the Israelites who appeared beautiful
on the outside but inside they filled
with extortion and excess. Today we
hear influential men saying that if you
don't believe like I do you can't be a
Primitive Baptist. Isaiah 55:7, "Let the
J
I
wicked forsake his way," - this is the
5. earth - "and the unrighteous man his
thoughts:" - this is the heaven part
"and let him return unto the Lord, and
he will have mercy upon him; and to our
God, for he will abundantly pardon."
Their repentance would change both the
attitude and walk in this life. It would
be like Steven told the eunuch at his
baptism. "If you believe with all your
heart thou mayest" - all the way is what
God requires. Isaiah 34:5 speaks of God
bathing his sword in heaven. This is
powerful preaching that affects our
very being with deep remorse and
understanding. This preaching is the
great no ise that causes the heavens to
pass away. Gal. '4:9 now speaks of us as
after we have known God, or rather are
known of God. Why do we turn again to
the weak and beggarly element? If we
do that, we go back unto the bondage
from which God brought us out by
condemning or writing his lawn in our
heart. This is the burning heat. Col. 2:8
gives the same Greek word for element,
the meaning of rudiments of this world
6. and not after Christ. 2nd Pet. 2: 20
proves this and we are just like dogs
that return back to that which made
them sick to start with.
Verse 11-15: "Seeing then that all these
things shall be dissolved, what manner of
persons ought we to be in all holy
conversation and godliness, Looking for and
hasting unto the coming of the day of God,
wherein the heavens being on fire shall be
dissolved, and the elements shall melt with
fervent heat." Now if we look for a loving
better day look forward for this to happen.
I
Hasting means we look forward to this as just
what we need even though it is a great trial,
and the unbelievers will be destroyed from
God's kingdom here on earth. Here the
heavens are on fire (our attitude) and
thinking will change, and elements of worldly
walks and acts will melt away in our lives.
"Nevertheless we, according to his promise,
look for new heavens and a new earth,
wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore,
beloved, seeing that ye look for such things,
be diligent that ye may be found of him in
7. peace, without spot, and blameless. And
account that the longsuffering of our Lord is
salvation;"
To the people that don't believe and don't
fear or give a different meaning to arr this, he
will come as a thief. If this is eternal, then
the 14th verse is works for us to make
ourselves acceptable at the end of time. God
be thanked this is not so. So be warned that
we can't take advantage of God's slowness.
He will not tarry, and this day I feel is on its
way to God's church.
