31. SWEDEN – UPPSALA UNIVERSITY
∗ Project
∗ Subsidiary of the Uppsala university the Angstrom solar
center laboratory is doing research on different solar cells and
how to improve their efficiency
∗ In order to fulfill their goals they implement several projects
∗ Process development

∗ Results that are achieved are reported in scientific journals
and conferences
31 12/27/2011
LIEPĀJAS PILSĒTAS DOME
32. Sweden – Uppsala University #2
∗ Motivation
∗ The long-term goal of their activities is to develop the
thin-film solar-cell technology so that it can provide
renewable electricity in large scale. This requires that
the solar cells become considerably more cost effective
than they are today.

33. Sweden – Uppsala University #3
∗ Initiator
∗ Two associate professors, Mr. Uwe Zimmermann and
Ms. Marika Edoff
∗ Lessons learned
∗ In the lab scale, CIGS solar cells approach the 20%
efficiency limit. But to scale up from a few cm2 cells to
large volume production of m2 modules without loosing
too much in efficiency is a big challenge. Success
requires development of robust, up-scalable and
potentially low cost production processes.
