Socrates believed that knowledge should be held in high esteem. He developed the "Triple Filter Test" to determine whether information passed three important filters - truth, goodness, and usefulness - before being shared. When an acquaintance approached Socrates with gossip about a friend, Socrates applied the three filters, and the acquaintance admitted that what they had heard failed all three tests. Socrates concluded there was no reason to share information that was untrue, unkind, or unhelpful. The visitor was impressed by the lesson of only spreading information that passed the Triple Filter Test.
2. In ancient Greece, Socrates was reputed to hold
knowledge in high esteem.
One day an acquaintance met the great
philosopher and said, "Do you know what I just
heard about your friend?”
3. "Hold on a minute, before telling me anything I'd like
you to pass a little test. It's called the Triple Filter Test.“
Socrates replied.
"Triple filter? What’s that? “ asked the visitor.
“I have set of three filters, I shall take in your views
only if passes thru these filters..”
Explained Socrates.
4. The first filter is of Truthfulness...
“Have you made absolutely sure that what
you are about to tell me is true?"
Socrates applied the first filter.
"No..actually I just heard about it and...“
The man said. He was feeling he got caught
on the wrong foot….
5. The second filter is of Goodness…
Is what you are about to tell me about my friend
something good?"
Socrates applied the second filter…
"No, on the contrary...“
The man was getting nervous…
6. The filter of Usefulness.
You may still pass the test though, because
there's one filter left.
“Is what you want to tell me about my friend
going to be useful ?"
Socrates applied the final filter…
"No, not really“
The man replied after thinking for a while and he
was almost apologetic…
7. "Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want
to tell me is neither true nor good nor even
useful, why tell it to me at all?"
The visitor not only learned the lesson of
His life, but also became a better human
being…
This is why Socrates was a great philosopher &
is still held in such high esteem.
8. Applying right knowledge is
generating right experience…
Can we mentally filter what we are going to
talk thru these three filters?
Can we prevent getting caught in gossips and
end up spoiling relationships by actually
applying these three filters when any loose
talker gossips ?
9. Filter of TRUTHFULNESS
Filter of USEFULNESS
Filter of GOODNESS
Talk only what gets passed thru these three filters.
Listen only what gets passed thru these three filters.
TRIPLE FILTER TEST OF SOCRATES
Can we ACTUALLY USE these filters and move
From being knowledgeable to becoming wise ?
