When Grandpa Got Sick
Heidi Jacobson
My Grandpa is the nicest man in the whole world. He always lets me do whatever I want.
Sometimes he takes me down to the lake so we can fish. He helps me put my bait on the
hook and then we wait for a bite. We've caught some pretty big fish, once I caught a striped
bass. Sometimes we'll go walking together and he will tell me about when he was just a kid
like me. They sure did some silly things back in his day, like play hide and seek and kick the
can.
I guess they didn't have computers back then. Grandpa understands the computer, sort of...,
sometimes we play games on it. I always win. He's pretty slow..... Lately Grandpa hasn't
been feeling so well. We don't play outside anymore. He stays inside the house and
watches TV all day long in his favorite loveseat, the one with the hole worn out on the arm.
I sit and watch with him and sometimes we eat popcorn and stuff, he knows how to use the
microwave to pop it up really good.
The other night I went to find Grandpa but he wasn't at home. My Mom told me that they had
to take him to the hospital to run some tests on him. I asked my Mother if we could go and
visit him and she said yes. We drove to the hospital and Mom was crying a bit.
Once we got inside there were people being wheeled around on stretchers and in
wheelchairs. It smelled funny in there too, like cleaning stuff or something. We rode the
elevator to Grandpa’s floor. There were lot of Nurses and Doctors there, carrying charts. We
stopped and asked where Grandpa’s room was. We found it and opened the door. Grandpa
was there, lying in the hospital bed covered in a white sheet. His feet were sticking out of the
sheet and he had some black socks on.
Grandpa smiled when he saw me and I ran over to the side of the bed to give him a kiss. My
Mother told me to be careful. Grandpa is always glad to see me! He smiled and hugged me
hard. I held his hand, it felt fragile.
He had an IV stuck in him and I asked him if it hurt. He said "no it didn't."
It felt good to have my Grandpa back again. I told him about school and about Fluffy the cat.
Grandpa didn't really like the cat, but I told him anyway.
I told him that Fluffy was waiting for him, in his truck, to come back home again. He said the
next time he sees that cat he is going to whoop him.
A pretty nurse came in and brought Grandpa his dinner on a tray.
It looked pretty yucky. He ate some of it and gave me his milk and some strawberry Jello. My
Mom was there, all weepy and worried, I guess that's what Moms do, worry all the time. She
doesn't know about all the brave things that Grandpa and I do together like climb trees, race
trucks and chase raccoons out of the yard with my BB gun.
We stayed with him for a few hours. He fell asleep for a while so I walked around in the
hallway looking into the other rooms. The people sure did look sick. Then the nurse came in
and told us that visiting hours were over and we had to go. I hugged Grandpa tight and told
him that I loved him.
That was all that I could do, he said that he loved me too.
I felt better knowing that we had brightened his day. I went home that night and prayed that
Grandpa would be feeling better soon. He will. I know it.

Bumble Learns To Buzz
Donald V Mitchell
Once upon a time there was a little bee called Bumble who had no buzz.
This wasn't noticed at first, when there are lots of bees flying around, it's hard to tell who's
buzzing and who's not.
It was only when Bumble was sent on an errand by the Queen bee that this came to light.
"A bee without a buzz is like a flower without a petal," buzzed the Queen.
"Or a teapot without a kettle," droned a drone.
"Bumble must go to school and learn to buzz," the Queen said in a stinging voice.
All the royal attendants started buzzing around in confusion, each one trying to outdo the
others in carrying out the Queen's wishes.
By the time they had all settled down again, Bumble was enrolled in a school at the bottom of
the garden.
"Now, for your first lesson I want you all to say - b. Listen to me, then try it yourselves," the
old teacher said to his new class. "B - b - b."
There followed a lot of cheek puffing by the pupils, but no one could master the sound.
"Oh dear! Oh dear! Learning the bee alphabet is not going to be easy for you lot," the old
teacher sighed. "Let's see how you do with the last letter. Now listen to me carefully, z - z -
z."
The bee children tried again.
This time they used their tongues against their teeth, "Sl - . Sli - sli," some managed to say,
but not quite getting it right.
"Well, I suppose this calls for patience. After all, a rose garden wasn't cultivated in a day," the
kindly old teacher said. "We'll try again tomorrow. Now buzz off home - um - I mean, class
dismissed."
As the bee weeks passed by Bumble and his classmates began to master the letters B and
Z, all of them flying around the playground shouting out, "Bz - bz - bz."
"Now for the middle letter of the alphabet," the old teacher said one morning.
Bumble wondered if he'd master the whole alphabet.
"U - u - u," buzzed the old teacher.
"I - i - i," buzzed the pupils.
It took the rest of the school term for the pupils to master the bee alphabet.
Did Bumble pass the exam? Well, go down to the bottom of the garden with your parents and
see the little bees feeding from the flowers. Listen! Can you hear the buzz - buzz - buzz?
One of those bees is Bumble. He has learned to buzz.
Now he can take his place in service to the Queen... Buzzing happily forever more.

Toodles The Pink Poodle
Beth Roose
I couldn't believe what I was seeing, yes it was Elva Mae Ryan walking Toodles the Pink
Poodle, and behind them were 6 Dalmatians, their spots were pink. What a funny sight.
Shop owners came out for a look as Elva Mae, Toodles, and 6 Dalmatians passed by.
Everyone standing on the sidewalk pointed, and many held their tummies laughing, as Elva
Mae, Toodles, and 6 Dalmatians walked by, blowing big bubbles with their pink bubble gum.
Elva Mae stopped at the Pink Belle outdoor café. I could not hear what she said to the man
at the booth. Toodles and the 6 Dalmatians sat quietly as Elva Mae spoke softly to the man
in the booth.
The man at the booth escorted Elva Mae, Toodles, and the 6 Dalmatians to the table next to
the big iron gate. They all sat down at the table. The sun shone very brightly at their table.
Elva Mae put on her big pink sunglasses.
Elva Mae took out seven pairs of pink sunglasses just like hers and put one pair on each
dog. They all looked so funny in their big pink sunglasses.
It seemed like only a few minutes had gone by when several waiters came from behind the
big tree next to the door. They had the biggest pink cake you have ever seen. It had tiny
white marshmallows and 2 large pink candles on it.
One of the waiters had on a pink bow tie and started singing happy birthday. Soon all the
waiters joined in. The waiter with the pink bow tie set the pink cake down in front of Toodles.
Everyone in the Pink Belle outdoor café sang along. As they finished singing, everyone
clapped. As I listened to the clapping, I noticed everyone had on pink gloves. I looked over at
Toodles, blowing out her candles. She was so happy.
I turned as I heard Elva Mae laugh loudly. I followed where she was looking. It was Toodles;
she had pink birthday cake all over her face with a white marshmallow stuck to her nose.
Elva Mae, Toodles, and her 6 Dalmatian friends had fun that day. They left the Pink Belle
outdoor café, each with a pink balloon tied to a pink sparkle bracelet. As they passed each
shop, everyone said, "Happy Pink Birthday, Toodles"!
