Hi I’m Arielle, and I get really excited about awkward situations, I think you should too! So here’s a quick marketer’s guide to awkward moments.
awkward situations are universal. Most of us deal with awkward situations in different ways. some people get really anxious and freaked out, some talk quickly like I’m doing now, but there's a talented few who can take awkward situations and learn from them.
There’s an even more talented group of people who know how to make awkward moments magical. So today, I’d like to talk to you about how these talented group of people - marketers - take seemingly negative experiences - awkward moments - and make them magical.
First we all must realize that an awkward moment is simply the gap between what you expect from others and what they expect from you. In that gap, lives a little monster called the awkward turtle and he’s the one who provides you with all the discomfort you will need. Before we figure out why this happens, let’s go through some awkward moments for kicks.

Maybe it’s your child, maybe it’s a niece or nephew, but a great awkward moment is when a little angel points out the one embarrassing thing about you no one else wanted to mention. So number one is kids insults.
This may happen to you if you’re overly friendly like me. You go in for the handshake and they give you a hug. Or vice versa is just as bad. That’s number two for you: the beast that is the handshake/hug
We’re busy people and we like to move. Number three is when the person in front of you is moving too slowly, so you have to walk uncomfortably fast to pass them up and get a good cushion between you.
Six makes me very uncomfortable for some reason. Whether it’s hispanic or latino, asian or asian american, white, black, african american, etc. In an effort to be as PC as possible you never know what to say. Which leads you to … you guessed it… an awkward moment.

As marketers we have to understand communication. And awkwardity is a area of communication that has thousands of hidden treats, but is overlooked by professionals and academics alike. And it’s easy - we just learn from it through observation. And personal experience.
