set-top media player lineup, and it looks like that leaked WD TV-2 has

Windows Phone commercial is
confusing for a variety of
reasons

Okay, so we understand Microsoft is trying hard to rebrand Windows
Mobile as Windows Phone with the launch of WinMo 6.5, but this
commercial — labeled with AT&T logos in the US but also running
unlabeled worldwide — doesn’t seem to do a good job of pointing out
that Windows Phone is a platform and not a device. In fact, if we didn’t
know better, we’d think that the HTC Pure is, in fact, the “Windows
Phone” — even though the dude in the spot is holding a totally different
generic device. See how that could be weird for people? It’s almost
confusing enough to distract from the jubilant anthropomorphic app
icons in tights. Video after the break.

Silicone skins for the Storm 2 are starting to find their way into
shipments destined to Best Buy stores around the country, another solid
signal that RIM’s second touchscreen effort is hitting retail sooner rather
than later. What we found amusing about this first batch is that the
packaging seems conflicted about what to call the thing — 9550, Storm II
(as opposed to Storm2 or Storm 2, interestingly), and even the phone’s
codename Odin all make appearances front and center. We suppose
they’re just trying to make it crystal clear what phone the skin’s intended
for, and with leaks going back a solid year, you’ve got to cover all your
bases.

Sidekick failure rumors point
fingers at outsourcing, lack of

Backing up your personal PC to external media might still be a novel
concept for some, but any IT manager fresh out of school can tell you
that regularly backing up mission-critical servers — and storing those
backups in multiple physical locations — isn’t merely important, it’s
practically non-negotiable, and it only becomes that much more critical
before undertaking hardware maintenance. Alleged details on the events
leading up to Danger’s doomsday scenario are starting to come out of the
woodwork, and it all paints a truly embarrassing picture: Microsoft,
possibly trying to compensate for lost and / or laid-off Danger
employees, outsources an upgrade of its Sidekick SAN to Hitachi, which
— for reasons unknown — fails to make a backup before starting. Long
story short, the upgrade runs into complications, data is lost, and
without a backup to revert to, untold thousands of Sidekick users get
shafted in an epic way rarely seen in an age of well-defined, well-
understood IT strategies.
The coming weeks are going to be trying times for both Microsoft and T-
Mobile, a sideline player in this carnage that ultimately still shoulders
responsibility for taking users’ cash month after month and keeping tabs
on the robustness of its partners’ workflows. We’re betting that heads are
going to roll at both of these companies, formal investigations are going
to be waged, users are going to be compensated in big ways, lawsuits are
going to be filed, and textbooks could very well be modified to make sure
that lessons are learned for the next generation of college grads tasked
with keeping clouds running. Why there weren’t any backups — even
older ones — that could’ve been used as a restore point is totally unclear,
so we’re hoping Microsoft has the stones to come clean for the benefit of
an entire industry that wants to understand how to make sure this never
happens again.

We’ve seen NES mods that incorporate a screen and controls into a
cartridge in the past, but this example from Airz in BenHeck’s forums is
just so clean and well-polished that we had to give it some love. Inside
Airz says it’s just a generic Chinese media player that can play NES,
Gameboy, and Gameboy Color ROMs, along with the relevant controller
bits, a 2.8-inch LCD, 4GB of storage, and a rechargeable battery. Oh, and
if you’re feeling particularly retro, you can hook it up over TV-out and
play on the big screen. Not bad — and it’s for sale if you’re as in love as

chair. Today’s featured workspace is a standing desk with ample space
and well-managed cables.
Lifehacker reader Timothy Bohen built his standing desk out of MDF
sheets with some simple pine trim and painted the whole thing black.
Once paints and assembled you’d never guess that it wasn’t purchased as
is. The cables are all routed through the legs of the desk, the power strip
is actually under the floor, attached to one of the rafters directly below
the desk—a rather clever solution for banishing cable clutter.

Wow, judging by our tips jar we’d say you’re all pretty darn excited about
Geohot’s Blackra1n jailbreak, which lets you open up iPhone OS 3.1.2
devices including the iPod touch 3G and new iPhone 3GSs — but you
can’t unlock yet, so don’t get any big ideas about switching carriers.
Windows-only at the moment, but with this level of enthusiasm out there
we can’t imagine a Mac version is far behind.

Create a Ceiling Fiber-Optic

Stick-on glow-in-the-dark stars have nothing on the lighting installation
in this nursery. Check out the video inside to see how a DIYer dad turned
his child’s nursery ceiling into a glowing starscape.
This is one of those projects that is mechanically simple but oh so time
consuming. He purchased an LED illumination box—the engine that
powers the whole affair—and bundles of fiber optic cable. From there it
was a matter of mapping out the star pattern he wanted, drilling holes,
and stuffing a fiber-optic strand into each one. The end result definitely
seems more than worth the labor. We think you’d be hard pressed to find
any child—or adult!—who wouldn’t love a ceiling of stars that actually
twinkle.

Fix a Dented Beer Pong Ball

Investing too much in replacement beer pong balls? Refurbish your
banged-up balls with this easy fix.
We could have titled this one “fix a dented ping-pong ball”, but most
people can play a round of ping pong without unleashing their Godzilla
stomp on the poor ball. Beer pong is a different beast altogether. If, after
a night of beer pong and bad steps, you’ve got a cup full of dented ping
pong balls, you can bring them back to life with a couple simple tricks.
The first trick, pictured above, is to boil a pot of water and place the balls
into the boiling water for about 10 seconds to pop the dents out. The
other version of the trick involves a lighter. Since, as Wired points out,
ping pong balls are made of nitrocellulose which burns easily we’re going
to suggest sticking with the boiling version for the sake of safety.

It’s a perfect time of year to try your hand at turning some apple cider
into hard cider, apple cider’s rabble-rousing older brother. With just a
few supplies and a jug of cider, you can brew your own at home.
Armed with a jug or two of apple cider and some easily acquired
homebrew gear like a vapor lock and a packet of yeast, you’ll be ready to
start the brewing process. Your total cash outlay should be under $10 to
get started, though you can certainly obtain higher-spec brewing
supplies.
The Instructables tutorial covers making your own apple brew using both
fresh, unpasteurized cider, and using commercially available pasteurized
cider like you’d find at your local grocer. If you skip the make-your-own-
cider step and buy a jug from the local cider mill, the whole process
should take you only a matter of minutes to set up. Let your jugs sit tight
in a cool and dark place for a few weeks and you’ll have some home-
made hard cider to help you ride out the winter months.

Do you love Lenovo laptops, but at a distance? We thought so. That’s
why we’re happy to report that a variation of the company’s SL400 and
SL500 laptops have been announced for non-US markets. The devices,
creatively dubbed the SL410 and SL510, will be offered with a choice of a
Core 2 Duo T5870, T6670, P7570 or Celeron 900, T3000, or T3100
CPUs, a 16:9, 14- or 15.6-inch LED display, GMA 4500MH, 4500MHD
or AMD M92-S2 XT GPUs, a range of hard drives up to 500GB, 1GB to
4GB of RAM, and both contain multitouch trackpads. The laptops are
said to be retailing starting at 5600 Yuan (or around $820) for the SL410
— we haven’t heard a price on the SL510 yet. No word on when these
models will be headed stateside, but we’re certainly going to do our best
to find out.

eye onwhat your computer’s up to. If you want to go beyond the built-in
tool and get a closer look, check out today’s offerings.
Last week we asked you to share your favorite alternative to the
Windows Task Manager and now we’re back to share the five most
popular nominees. Read over the entries below, and don’t forget to cast

Process Hacker (Windows, Free)

Process Hacker is the only open-source offering in today’s Hive. When
using Process Hacker you’re not just able to view your applications and
services in more detail but to interact with them in a variety of
ways—many well beyond the scope of the standard task manager, like
hex editing the contents of a process’ virtual memory. Process Hacker
allows you to alter process security levels, terminate, suspend, resume,
and restart them. For those “What is this?” moments, you can right click
to search online for the identity of a given process and what it might be
up to.
Anvir Task Manager (Windows, Basic: Free, Premium: $39.95)
Anvir Task Manger is available in a range of editions ranging in cost
from free to $89.95 for a full security suite. The free edition, however,
has quite an array of features that make it more than satisfactory as an
alternative to the default Windows tool. From within Anvir Task Manger
you can manager your startup applications and delay their startup to
improve your boot time, and check processes against a virus database. In
addition to common features like the ability to alter the priority of a
process you can also right click on any process and hide the window it is
running in within the system tray. Although you have to install it to
unpack it, once installed you can turn Anvir Task Manager into a
portable application.
Process Explorer (Windows, Free)
Process Explorer is the free and portable offering from Microsoft.
Process Explorer is like the standard task manager on steroids. You still
get a list of processes, you still see charts of your usage, but both give you
significantly more information and control over the information. Unlike
the default manager, Process Explorer makes it easy to track down which
file is being held by which program and get to the bottom of computer
mysteries like why a certain DLL or DOC file simply cannot be deleted. It
also shows which service is performing which function so you’ll never
look at a long and repetitive list of Windows system executables that are
indistinguishable from each other—every one will be associated with its
function.
Extended Task Manager (Windows, Free)
If you want more than the default task manager can offer but you’re not
sure if you need some of the advanced featured offered by other
nominees in this week’s Hive Five, Extended Task Manager is a great
compromise. Extended Task Manger can display locked files and which
process is locking them, help you terminate specific processes to free
files, provides a summary overview of your resource usage, and allows
you to pause and resume processes. Note: we ended up having to test
Extended Task Manager on one of our Windows XP machines after it
failed to launch in Windows 7 64-bit. Whether this is a result of being
launched in Windows 7 or in a 64-bit environment is unknown.

System Explorer (Windows, Free)
System Explorer lived up to its name by not only allowing you to explore
system processes but which applications autorun on startup, system add-
ons, drivers, services, and more. It doesn’t have the most elegant
interface we’ve seen so far, but it does pack in an enormous amount of
information and functionality. You can manipulate processes, search for
additional information online, check them against virus databases, and
hunt down which process is locking which file or causing system
instability.

Documentaries for Your
Viewing Pleasure [Movies]

If you’re looking for something a bit meatier than YouTube fare for
weekend watching, check out SnagFilms and enjoy documentaries on a
wide range of topics.
You’ll find all sorts of content on SnagFilms, ranging from well-known
documentaries like Super Size Me to lesser- known but interesting works
like The Times of Harvey Milk, about the assassination of San
Fransisco’s first openly gay mayor, and Hell on Wheels, about the origins
of modern women-only roller derbies.
The films are almost all full length and of a high quality—no grainy
webcam political rants here. Watching the videos is free and requires no
login, though there are brief 10-15 second ads sprinkled throughout the
videos—one appeared during out test run of Super Size Me every 15
minutes or so.

David Hockney paints with his
iPhone, results not typical

Artist David Hockney isn’t afraid of picking up new media — over the
years, he’s used Polaroids, photocollages, and even fax machines to
create his art — in addition to regular, old-fashioned painting. Now, he’s
taken to using his iPhone to create new works of art. The resultant
“paintings” have been exhibited at the Tate Gallery and Royal Academy
in London, as well as galleries in Los Angeles and Germany. Like artist
Jorge Colombo (whose iPhone fingerpainting was featured on the cover
of The New Yorker), Hockney uses the iPhone app Brushes to create his
works. In an interview with the New York Review of Books, Hockney
notes that he prefers and still uses the original version of the app, not the
more recent updates. Hmm... maybe the reason our own Brushes
paintings stink is because we’re using the update!

Cheap netbook sales bringing
down laptop revenues, no
brainers require no brains

Hey, this is probably surprising to no one, but here we go. A new market
research report from DisplaySearch says that the overall mobile PC
market is down about 5 percent over last year. The main reason cited for
this decline? The increasing popularity of netbooks, which average
around $300, and are much, much cheaper than traditional laptops.
Netbook revenue is up 264 percent from last year, and have contributed
to an overall lowering of the average PC cost by 19 percent. While this is
certainly bad news for the PC industry itself, hooray for all of us, right?!

HTC’s HD2 gets sized up to the
competition

We’ve already seen (and written) plenty on the HD2, and we’ve enjoyed
our initial experiences with the device — but now someone has finally
sized up the massive, Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone with its
touchscreen contemporaries... and the differences are downright
shocking. Just take a look at this beast next to Apple’s iPod touch (above)
or the company’s own Hero — the displays on the older devices seem
dwarfed by the HD2’s 4.3-inch, 800 x 480 WVGA screen. There are lots
of other revealing pictures in the writeup, but it’s the side-by-side shots
that seem most telling to us — this is certainly the direction we’re headed

Ultra-limited edition Nokia N97

Nokia’s teamed up with fashion house RAOUL for a special, limited
edition N97 mini. The leather-heavy pack will contain a stripe-
emblazoned N97 mini with a custom designed Fashion Asia widget and a
calf-skin leather case. The whole shebang will come in a leather bound
RAOUL box. The production will be limited to just 1000 units (sort of
good news for the calves, we suppose), so if you live in Singapore and
want to get one, we’d suggest getting a move on: they’re up for pre-order
right now for 400 euro — about $589.

Physicist wants to test
Hyperdrive Propulsion in Large
Hadron Collider

How come news can never come out of the Large Hadron Collider that
doesn’t remind us of our planet’s impending SciFi Techno-
Apocalypse(tm)? When not busy being called a doomsday machine,
being bedeviled by hackers and Chuck Norris (yuck!), or just plain
failing, the facility could be used to test “hyperdrive” spacecraft
propulsion. Seriously! And you know what that means — someone is
planning on escaping the planet, and fast. A physicist named Franklin
Felber has been musing over a little known German paper from the
1920s (“The Foundations of Physics” by David Hilbert) which states, in
part, that under certain conditions a stationary mass should repel a
relativistic particle. If this is true, Felber, concludes, then shouldn’t a
relativistic particle repel a stationary mass? According to MIT’s
Technology Review, the LHC would be the perfect place to test this idea:
Felber could “set up a test mass next to the beam line and measure the
forces on it as the particles whiz past.” The experiment could be run in
tandem with the collider’s other work — and who knows? Mankind may
soon be on its way to the starts at near-light speeds. Let’s just hope we
figure this out before the robots take over.
