Pteridophytes are vascular plants and have leaves (known as fronds), roots and sometimes true stems, and tree ferns have full trunks. Examples include ferns, horsetails and club-mosses. Fronds in the largest species of ferns can reach some six metres in length! Many ferns from tropical rain forests are epiphytes, which means they only grow on other plant species; their water comes from the damp air or from rainfall running down branches and tree trunks. There are also some purely aquatic ferns such as water fern or water velvet (Salvinia molesta) and mosquito ferns (Azolla species). Pteridophytes do not have seeds or flowers either, instead they also reproduce via spores. There are around 13,000 species of Pteridophytes.

• Biosystematics is simply known as “the study of biodiversity and its origins”. In a broader sense, it is a science through which organisms are discovered, identified, named and classified with their diversity, phylogeny, spatial and geographical distributions. • Biosystematics is a synthetic branch which uses the characters and data from many disciplines like morphology, anatomy, cytology, genetics, palynology, embryology, ecology, plant geography, phylogeny, physiology, phytochemistry, evaluation and paleobotany. Hence, biosystematics is an integrative and unifying science.

ABSTRACT: Species of the Centrospermeae occurring at different altitudes were analyzed for δ13C values and assigned for graphical representation. The aridity of the study area was evident as defined using the Klimadiagramm. Climatic data was studied and represented on graphs for interpretation. The frequency ofδ 13C values of the species at different altitudes, namely 500m a.s.l., 1000m a.s.l., 1500m a.s.l., 2000m a.s.l., 2500m a.s.l., 3000m a.s.l., 3500m a.s.l. and 4000m a.s.l., are presented on graphs. The data show thatδ13C values is a good predictor of spatial diversity and shift of the species along the altitudinal gradient of environmental factors. There is phenomenal trend such that δ13C values distribution along altitudinal differentiation the values of -10.60‰, to -16.65‰, -17.75‰ to -18.87‰, and -18.89‰ to -32.42‰ correspond to the species at low altitudes (0m a.s.l. – 1500m a.s.l.), intermediate altitude (1,550m a.s.l.-1,700m a.s.l.) and high altitude (1,800m a.s.l. – 4200m a.s.l.0, respectively. The inverse correlation between temperature and rainfall defines the causal climatic factors affecting C3 and C4 species along the altitudinal gradient. The occurrence of the transition zone between temperature and rainfall mirror that between the relative abundance of the C3 and C4 species along the altitude. This floristic data predict NAD-ME, NADP-ME AND PEP-CK types of monocot-dicot transition along the altitude with respect to bioproductivity in the tropics.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
