LTMS 510: Learning Technologies and Solutions is a course in the Learning Technologies Master of Science (LTMS) program at Harrisburg University of Science & Technology
Note: Agenda – Display as students enter the room Review Learning Technology Selection Presentations ePortfolio Assignment Reflection Course/Instructor Evaluation Topic 1: The Future of Learning Technologies We’re going to skip around through all of these tonight
Note: Review (10 minutes) 6:00-6:10PM Any question or any additional thoughts on devices? LT Presentation, Podcasts and LT Encyclopedia feedback has been discussed in the forums since the last class Learning Technology Presentation Positives; What did you like? What did you get out of the project? Deeper learning about the topic Storyboarding Different presentation environment (Wimba, PPT, Wiki) Found new resources Presentation practice Negatives; What did you not like? What would you do differently? More interaction More use of the technology Topic selection Podcasts I had not stopped to think about the types before. I know it was easier to listen to instructional podcasts that had a show flair. Just listening to the same voice will cause people to stop paying attention eventually - mixing in music and sound effects is a great way to keep the attention. Now when I listen I am aware of the format, the choices of music, fade-ins and fade-outs and sound effects. Summary: Thinking about how media has an impact on learning (motivation and cognition) Consider the quality of media as part of your learning solution Learning Technology Encyclopedia navigating the editing process and then understanding who does what, proved the most troubling Lisa - This is the second time I have been frustrated by a large wiki project. Please describe the other. – LTMS 600? Kathy - I was surprised at the lack of communication, except at the very beginning. Needed more feedback for the project. – class discussion time Who will be able to access it? Will there by any links to it from within the LTMS program, the Ning group, or somewhere? Will it be of use? It will be of use . . . Formatting and plagiarism are a concern. However, it was a good experience to learn to collaborate with people widely dispearsed. Wiki editor = bad Summary: Wiki implementation is usually just one person putting content together or wiki without an implementation plan. Hopefully, this project served to identify some of the potential and challenges in using social/collaborative tools. As instructors we decided on less structure with a goal of increasing the learning impact. Those of you that added only minor elements to the wiki were within the goals of the project. You can see how a large number of people working together can create a great resource without a huge effort from any one individual. As we move forward we need to reconsider how this project/resource evolves. You’ve provided some really good suggestions for doing that. I do think an important consideration that needs to be addressed in plagiarism. Really an experimental project that did have educational merit.
Note: Review (5 minutes) 6:10-6:15PM Future of learning technologies . . . We’ve been talking about the future of learning technologies the entire semester. In most categories, we’ve considered where the technology and the application of that technology might be going. But, what we’re going to focus on tonight when we consider the future of learning technologies is combined categories and potentially new categories of learning technologies that might have an impact in the future.
Note: Review (20 minutes) 6:15-6:35PM Geo Everything (2009) The Horizon report article on Geolocation and geocaching is relative to the other articles on data mashups, semantic aware applications and augmented reality. So, we’ll explore and discuss geo everything as part of our discussion about the other topics. Unless you have some specific questions about the geo everything article. Data Mashups (2008) The power of mashups for education lies in the way they help us reach new conclusions or discern new relationships by uniting large amounts of data in a manageable way. Read Horizon Report 2008 (pgs. 20-22) . Can you think of ways in which a data mashup could be used in your learning environment? Note: Review (16 minutes) 7:44-8PM Mindmap (show everyone’s third mindmap. Ask them what changed the most regarding how they think about learning technologies) We didn’t really talk about mind mapping when we discussed assessment technologies. It’s not a widely accepted practice for assessment, but I think it’s a good tool for self-reflection, group evaluation and also assessing prior knowledge. Hopefully it’s a way for you to interconnect everything we’ve explored this semester and look at learning technologies from a wholistic approach. Think about and compare your mind map at the beginning of the semester with the one you have now. Games & Simulations Olympics (Need to play games to be a good game designer . . . Note: Break (10 minutes) 8:10-8:20PM (Can’t show all of the demos within this time) Take a look at predictions in this section as well . . . Many of these technologies may not seem to have a direct connection to learning at this time. But, many of the tools that we use for learning today, did not start with that intention. We must survey the industries and developments outside, as well as inside, learning to be aware of future developments that might impact teaching and learning. Note: Review (5 minutes) 8:36-8:41PM Learning Technologies blog You all took different approaches and got varying degrees of feedback from your blog posts. For those of you who had never blogged before, what do you think you got out of the assignment?
Note: 8:41-8:50 Link to selection report from your ePortfolio Link to your final mind map from your ePortfolio Create a blog post in your ePortfolio summarizing your experience in LTMS this summer. What did you learn (in general) and how will it impact your future use of technology? How will you approach learning about and teaching other people about technology in the future?
Continue to learn.
Grades in by Tuesday, May 11. I’ll email you with your grades before I submit them so you can get back to me with any questions. If you were me, what would you do to improve the course? (If there’s any time left.)
