Notas do Editor

  1. What app store. What keywords you used to find apps for your industry.Apple/iTunes app store.“tourist attractions”Provide a screenshot of the results for your industry’s app search (to show the app icons)Select two apps to analyze, provide the names of the 2 appsThe first two results were “Roadside America” ($2.99) and “City Maps and Walks” (Free). The 2.99 app has been updated far more frequently than the free app (11/10/12 vs. 09/07/12)
  2. Analyze the titles, icons, screenshots and descriptions of these two apps. Why did you choose these two out of all the results given?Titles: “City Maps and Walks (470+ Cities) is a free app with a very straight forward name. While the other app focused more on attractions that may fall along a highway, this app directs its users on to walking tours of cities. The “470+ Cities” is included to establish credibility in order to distinguish itself from other free apps. Icons:City Maps and Walks: The icon for this app shows a shadow of an average guy in a baseball cap using his phone to navigate to an eventual destination (which is shown on the app in the background). Underneath the image are the words “City Walks”. This image is not as playful as “Roadside America”; however, it focuses more on getting the main point of the app across to the consumer. There are an abundance of free apps in every category. In order to be successful, an app must be straightforward or extremely different and captivating. Screenshots:City Maps and Walks: Each screenshot is laid out in the order of use. Both apps do a great job of showing the simplicity of using the application. Neither app has any sort of difficult technological features (unlike the running app we saw in class). Description: City Maps and Walks: The first sentence of this description is very explanatory, but rather dry. The description is sure to cover what this app is all about, but is just not very captivating. It is a free app, so they probably spent less time trying to convince the consumer to choose their product in the description. Describe each app, its revenue model, features and benefits. Analyze.City Maps and Walks includes a basic, but extensive list of routes and turn by turn walking directions that guide the user through major city attractions. The app is free and has a couple of great tools, such as custom tours and the audio narration option. It has basic and reasonable tools for a free app, but not nearly as much time and consideration went into this app’s features as did “Roadside America”. Read the reviews on the apps. What did you learn? How does that help you form ideas for your app?City Maps and Walks: This app’s reviews have indicated that it is pretty 50/50 in terms of the app even working. Once it is working, people are highly enthused about how useful the app is (and left 5 star reviews). However, the people who couldn’t get it to work were very angry and left 1 star reviews. This app is a good indication that free apps need to be useful, but also simple enough for the technology used. Find the accompanying online assets (website, youtube, facebook, twitter, etc) that that supports these apps. Describe and analyze. http://www.gpsmycity.comThis website is an extensive list of self-guided city walks. In this case, the website is made in support of “City Maps and Walks” as well as their other similar apps. The website is convenient in the sense that you could probably upload pictures and write reviews of certain places a lot faster than you would via phone.
  3. Analyze the titles, icons, screenshots and descriptions of these two apps. Why did you choose these two out of all the results given?Titles: “Roadside America” indicates that this will be all about roadside attractions. Icons:Roadside America: A playful and wacky take on a road sign. The car is driving off of the sign in mid air. The picture is used to illustrate and capture the fun and weird loving adventure seekers who make the most out of their road trips. Screenshots:Roadside America: The screenshots of the app are very informative and illustrative of how easy the app is to use. Description: Roadside America: The initial/above the fold description is very captivating – “Never miss another giant twine ball, crazy museum or hilarious statue.” In this first sentence alone, the whole app is pretty much summed up. There is plenty of other information, mainly boasting about the app with some useful descriptions of the extra features.Describe each app, its revenue model, features and benefits. Analyze.Roadside America is a great app to find all the famous and lesser known weird roadside attractions in the US and Canada. The app costs 2.99 and has a great variety of features. It not only has a huge database of roadside attractions, but you can search by category, location, read field reports from travel gurus, view photo galleries, and even get a “sunset alert” which reminds you of your last daylight photo opportunity. This app has really gone above and beyond what any standard roadside enthusiast would expect. Read the reviews on the apps. What did you learn? How does that help you form ideas for your app?Roadside America: This app had far more reviews than “City Maps and Walks”. However, it was still pretty hit or miss. There are more 4 star and 5 star reviews, but the 1 star reviews still make up for about 36% of the total. Everyone was pretty much pleased with the app, except for those who were angered by the hidden yearly fee. It seems that the maker of this app keeps trying to work in some sort of extra fee, whether it is in the form of full map access fee, or a yearly membership fee. If I am to charge for my app, this experience has taught me to be honest and accurate about the total price for the app.Find the accompanying online assets (website, youtube, facebook, twitter, etc) that that supports these apps. Describe and analyze. http://www.roadsideamerica.com/It appears that this website has existed before the app. Therefore, the app supports the website. It’s funny, the app seems easier to navigate than the actual website. The website it extremely cluttered.
  4. List and briefly describe 3 ideas for 3 different apps that you had for your app before selecting the final one.I want to do a free app, so I decided to choose the following:FriendsFlix: A recommendation/social network app that connects you with your friends so you can share movies that you’ve recently watched. The movie would come with an imdb link, Wikipedia link, a youtube trailer, and a Hulu or Netflix link (if available).Hike-ercise: A weight loss plan based on solely hiking. Would include hiking maps, various trails with the ability to calculate calorie loss w/weight inputted. Devil’s Teeth – Ready Bake: For local residents and snack hungry tourists, this application provides the consumer information on oven fresh goods.
  5. Which app you picked, your App name and why you selected it.Devil’s Teeth – ReadyBake: For local residents and snack hungry tourists, this application provides a map to navigate the consumer from their location to the store. The primary purpose would be to send alerts and updates for fresh batches of baked goods. This bakery is extremely popular and in a great location by the beach. Unfortunately, they always run out of their best items fast. This app could help keep customers aware of what is available, as well as help the bakery track demand. I believe this app would be very useful for a business like a bakery, especially one that keeps growing its impeccable reputation. Target audience and the need your app will fulfill.Target: Moms and children, young adults, connoisseurs of cakes and baked breakfast goods. Usually a good amount of families. People out for a special breakfast treat, or individuals on the goThis app will ensure their satisfaction with every purchase visit, due to all the ready-fresh information provided. No longer will they be disappointed on the family outing, or have to rethink and settle on a new order while you’re already in a hustle on the go. Category your app will be placed in (e.g. productivity, games, etc).Food and drinks. The bakery also has exceptional coffee.Describe your app’s features and benefits. The app will feature categories for the different baked goods. Each one will indicate updates on the next fresh batch, as well as pictures. Special of the day: A special recipe baked good will be highlighted on the app with a full description of the treat and detailed pictures. This app will ensure a greater sense of convenience for Devil’s Teeth customers. They can expect to get exactly what they wanted or planned each time. The pictures and specials will also provoke hungry morning people to make a stop. People who are in a rush can come in to the store knowing exactly what they want, instead of standing and staring at the board and display case. Describe the revenue model you’ve selected for your app and why it is appropriate. The app will be free in order to best promote and expand the business. We are hoping to build loyalty in the customer base, and keeping this application free will greatly assist this goal.Create an icon for branding your app. You can do this by actually designing an icon yourself or by showing images you’ve found online and describing the icon.My icon is a picture of a plate of the bakery’s cinnamon rolls with the logo floating atop it. I believe that this picture will help rope consumers in with the popular breakfast treat displayed. It also very simple and easy to digest upon first glance. There is nothing confusing about it, and it is very straightforward.
  6. Write a description for your app of 2-3 sentences. This must be ORIGINAL writing. Fans of the famous “Devil’s Teeth Baking Company” can now rejoice with their new convenient app. Get oven fresh updates on the latest donuts, rolls, cakes and various treats as well as daily specials. Plan your morning right with the hot and fresh goodies that you’re craving.I couldn’t get any recording to work on my computer, but was able to make screen shots of all my pages and activity.
