As a result, students are piling on debt and recent graduates are struggling under the weight of loans they wouldn't have needed 10 to 20 years ago. The Cougars Affordable Learning Materials Project (CALM) is part of the CSU Affordable Learning Solutions initiative started in 2010. CALM aims to aid faculty in replacing costly textbooks with lower cost alternatives by using high-quality open educational resources (OER), library resources, digital or customized textbooks, and/or faculty-authored materials.

Hoe gaaf zou het niet zijn als je ten overstaan van een volledig willekeurig (OK, lokaal verbonden) publiek je idee kan vertellen (pitchen) aan een groep mensen, en dat jij na 5 minuten aan het woord, er 115 minuten over jouw verhaal wordt meegedacht en gesproken. Dit concept heet Gave Dingen Doen, en ik was op 1 april met VoxVote de pitcher van de avond, op een mooie dinsdag tijdens het WK2014 in Brazilië in Coffee Lounge bar Inspire te Breda was ik de pitcher van de avond. "Bedenk zo veel mogelijk gave, onverwachte, extreme, rare toepassingen voor VoxVote". Dat was mijn stelling aan het einde van de introductie.

Accurate models of user interest are valuable in personalizing the presentation of the often large quantity of information relevant to a query or other form of information requests. A user often interacts with multiple applications while working on a task. User models can be developed individually at each of the individual applications, but there is no easy way to come up with a more complete user model based on the distributed activity of the user. In this talk, I will introduce a novel unification framework for relevance feedback in adaptive information access; practically these models provide context for user interactions with everyday applications for user interest modeling. To tackle the cold-start problem in personalization, I will show how we can take advantage of many existing interactions combining various implicit and explicit relevance feedback indicators in a multi-application environment. I will also present a framework expanding the use of human eye movements as a source of implicit relevance feedback for user interest modeling.

In social networks, where users send messages to each other, the issue of what triggers communication between unrelated users arises: does communication between previously unrelated users depend on friend-of-a-friend type of relationships, common interests, or other factors? In this work, we study the problem of predicting directed communication intention between two users. Link prediction is similar to communication intention in that it uses network structure for prediction. However, these two problems exhibit fundamental differences that originate from their focus. Link prediction uses evidence to predict network structure evolution, whereas our focal point is directed communication initiation between users who are previously not structurally connected. To address this problem, we employ topological evidence in conjunction to transactional information in order to predict communication intention. It is not intuitive whether methods that work well for link prediction would work well in this case. In fact, we show in this work that network or content evidence, when considered separately, are not sufficiently accurate predictors. Our novel approach, which jointly considers local structural properties of users in a social network, in conjunction with their generated content, captures numerous interactions, direct and indirect, social and contextual, which have up to date been considered independently. We performed an empirical study to evaluate our method using an extracted network of directed @-messages sent between users of a corporate microblogging service, which resembles Twitter. We find that our method outperforms state of the art techniques for link prediction. Our findings have implications for a wide range of social web applications, such as contextual expert recommendation for Q&A, new friendship relationships creation, and targeted content delivery.

Social applications implemented on a peer-to-peer (P2P) architecture mine the social graph of their users for improved performance in search, recommendations, resource sharing and others. In such applications, the social graph that connects their users is distributed on the peer-to-peer system: the traversal of the social graph translates to a socially-informed routing in the peer-to-peer layer. In this work we introduce the model of a projection graph that is the result of mapping a social graph onto a peer-to-peer network. We analytically formulate the relation between metrics in the social graph and in the projection graph. We focus on three such graph metrics: degree centrality, node betweenness centrality, and edge betweenness centrality. We evaluate experimentally the feasibility of estimating these metrics in the projection graph from the metrics of the social graph. Our experiments on real networks show that when mapping communities of 50-150 users on a peer, there is an optimal organization of the projection graph with respect to degree and node betweenness centrality. In this range, the association between the properties of the social graph and the projection graph is the highest, and thus the properties of the (dynamic) projection graph can be inferred from the properties of the (slower changing) social graph. We discuss the applicability of our findings to aspects of peer-to-peer systems such as data dissemination, social search, peer vulnerability, and data placement and caching.
