Data providers: cultural institutions that provide metadata and links to
digitized content
Aggregators: organizations or
projects that gather data from a
specific country or domain (music,
fashion, archaeology)

CC BY-SACC BY-SA
● We have adapted our data ingestion to recognize and
specifically process IIIF resources
● With a specific IIIF extension of our Europeana Data

New metadata aggregation channels
Europeana Essentials
CC BY-SACC BY-SA
● Goal: finding viable alternatives to metadata
aggregation via OAI-PMH, which is now perceived as
old, not easy to implement and limiting metadata
richness
● Versatile technologies that present low barriers for
adoption by data providers (Cultural Heritage
institutions): IIIF, Linked data and Schema.org
● For IIIF: starting from IIIF resources and then get
metadata

New metadata aggregation channels
Europeana Essentials
CC BY-SACC BY-SA
● First feasibility study with providers of the Europeana
Network: National Library of Wales & University
College Dublin
● Crawling IIIF services via IIIF Collections or Sitemaps
● Applying these technologies was straightforward for
providers, the main challenge is to choose among the
several possibilities and establishing a standard (or
best practice) within the community
● So we got involved in the IIIF Discovery work

Come back to metadata
formats and models!
Europeana Essentials
CC BY-SACC BY-SA
● Metadata element in IIIF Manifest are not meant for aggregation
● So we depend on suitable seeAlsos references
● EDM is ideal, but we have experimented with regular Dublin Core
and especially Schema.org, with North Carolina State
Universities, University of Illinois, National Library of the
Netherlands
● Generally Schema.org is suitable for Europeana, but it requires
adaptation work

Europeana Essentials

● Finishing and promoting implementation of IIIF
Discovery specs will help
● But we need more work on the seeAlsos!
