3. Tiger Woods
In 2008, the professional golfer tore the
anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left
knee and had to undergo surgery. Woods
initially tore his ACL in 2007 while running
at home. Doctors debated if Woods made
the correct decision to keep playing
despite his injury or should have sought
treatment sooner. ACL reconstruction is a
common procedure, performed by
physicians more than 100,000 times each
year with approximately a 90 percent
success rate.

4. Gwyneth Paltrow
In 2010, the actress was diagnosed with osteopenia, a
condition that indicates increased likelihood of
developing osteoporosis. Bone health depends largely
on the intake of calcium, a nutrient known to be lacking
in Paltrow’s diet. Although physicians could not
definitively tie her condition to diet, they raised
questions about it after discovering osteopenia in a
bone scan confirming a tibial plateau fracture. Paltrow
increased her intake of Vitamin D following the
diagnosis.
5. Donovan McNabb
The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback incurred a sports
hernia in 2005, bringing the condition to public
awareness. Technically referred to as a pubalgia, a
sports hernia is a painful condition resulting from
muscle tearing from the pubic bone. This injury causes
limited mobility as to the body attempts to heal itself.
Recovery and subsequent athletic performance
depends on the severity of the injury and
treatment, which generally consists of surgery.
