2. Loving new technology, programs and
services is the end of a process. In this
session we will walk through the five steps
of experimentation spending time on each
of the steps: discovery, exploration, playing,
learning and loving (or hating). We will
focus on technology tools that improve
services to our library members, but this
session will apply equally for face-to-face
interactions as well as virtual interactions.

Why do I think this is important?\nI believe that libraries are at a tipping point.\nWe can go the way of borders book stores; or we can become what I think we were destine to.\n

Yes, I’m telling you to be a kid again. Look at the world with fresh eyes. Make connections between different tools and your those you serve.\n
\n
The first step in discovering new ideas or tools is to open your mind. Beck provided several awesome tips this morning to aid in that.\nFind solititude\nPractice your morning pages\n
Step two is unlocking your heart. Over time, some of our hearts have become jaded and hardened. \nOthers have unjustly criticized us.\nNo body wants to get heart, so we seal our heart and stop trying.\n
The best method to discover new ideas and tools is to engage the conversation that occurs all around you. Talk to friends and coworkers. Talk to awesome librarians. Talk to people outside of the library community. Many of these tools are born out there.\n
Read about cool technology\n
Scan the horizon. What are your kids playing with? What do people walking in your doors use at home?\nDo you know that all tools aren’t created equal? Twitter is used by more 30-somethings.\n

Again, get outside of the library.\nApple Store\n
Sometimes, you just have to stop consuming information.\nDissertation example.\n
\n
There is a wonderful new book out. It equates healthy information consumption to healthy dieting.\nWhile it focuses on consumption, \nI would like to remind us that a healthy lifestyle includes exercise.\nInformation exercise is the creation process.\n

Exploring something is done in your mind. It’s a thinking endeavor. \n

Start a technology committee and talk about stuff you are hearing about.\nBeck mentioned a pinnup wall, I would encourage you and your tech committee to use a pinup wall or pinterest to capture all the ideas and tools you want to explore.\n
This is the best part.\nPlay with the tools.\nExpect to fail! \n
When you are playing with new technology do it away from your desk.\nWhy do so many people try stuff out at the Apple store?\nIt’s a space designed to encourage play.\n
You don’t learn a foreign language without trying it.\nThe same is true with technology tools.\n
Play is also about trying something that failed miserably. \nDon’t ever say we tried it and it didn’t work, try again.\nLearn from failure don’t hide from it.\n
Yes, I’m telling you to schedule a play date.\nBeck mentioned handholding as part of the learning process. Sometimes you need someone to help you see how to play with a certain tool\n
