3. INTRODUCTION
Health care is delivered in dynamic, complex , and
ever environment.
Changes in medical treatment, regulations for federal
and state reimbursement and public knowledge create
growing demands for information.
On average medical/surgical nurse spent 34% of their
time handling information.
4. DEFINITION
Nursing Informatics is a combination of computer science,
information science and nursing science designed to assist in
the management and processing of nursing data, information
and knowledge to support the practice of nursing and the
delivery of nursing care
- Graves & Corcoran, 1989
5. CONT…..
“ The use of computer technology to
support nursing including clinical
practice, administration, education and
research.”
- according to Hebda

INFORMATICS
DATA
INFORMATION
KNOWLEDGE
7. CONT….
Data:-
include direct observations that do not need
interpretation.
e.g. patients name, age, vital signs.
Information:-
Information is data that has been interpreted.
e.g. prevalence of hospital acquired infections by care unit.
8. CONT…
Knowledge:-
It is the Amalgam of information to identify
relationships that provide further observation to an issue.
e.g. The effect of nurse- patient relations and patient outcomes.
The three concepts are also stored in computer
programs and software to assist health care providers across the
continuum to provide high-quality, safe patient care.
9. TECHNOLOGIES EVOLVED DUE TO NURSING
INFORMATICS
Computerized provider order entry (CPOE)
Electronic Medical Records (EMRs)
- Test Results
- Progress Notes
- Nursing Notes
- Medication Records

11. CONT..
Clinical Practice-
Work lists to remind staff of planned nursing interventions.
Computer generated client documentation.
Electronic Medical Record (EMR) - Computer Based Patient
Record (CPR)
-monitoring devices that record vital signs and
other measurement directly into the
client record.
12. Nursing Administration-
Health Care Information System
Automated staff scheduling
Email for improved communication
Cost analysis and finding trends for
budget proposes.
Quality assurance and outcome analysis
13. Nursing Education-
Computerized record keeping
Computerized assisted instruction
Distance learning – web based courses and degree
programs
Presentation Software for preparing slides and
handouts
14. Nursing Research-
Computerized literature searching- CINAHL, Medicine and
web source.
The adoption of standardized language related to Nursing
Terms – NANDA etc.
16. NURSE INFORMATICS RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Assessing and analyzing health care technology needs.
Designing systems technology
Testing systems technology
Implementing the technology which also include
- staff training
- trouble shooting
Evaluating the success of implementation receiving as needed
Serving as project manager
Serving as a resource to staff
17. SUMMARY
Till now we discussed about the Introduction of Nursing
informatics, Definition, Frame work of Nursing Informatics,
Technologies evolved due to Nursing Informatics, scope of
Nursing Informatics, Nursing career in informatics, Nurse
informatics responsibilities and duties.
18. CONCLUSION
Nursing informatics provides the solution to many of the
challenges that health care is facing, from easing the
strain from nursing shortage to improving patient safety.
Nurses of all ages (senior nurses) must embrace
technology and integrate it into their Nursing Practice
therefore senior nurses should take up the challenge to use
computer technology which would lead to informatics.
