2. Feminism vs. post-feminism
Firstwave feminism focused mainly on
suffrage and gender equality
Second wave broadened the debate to
wide range of issues (sexuality, family etc.)
Radical feminism is more anti-men
whereas post feminism focuses on being
pro-women without being anti-men
3. Radical feminism aims to overthrow
patriarchy whereas post feminism may
say equality is achieved.
Post feminist, feminism has achieved its
goals and now its time to distance
ourselves from the movement.
4. Radical feminism on sex & the
media
Women are victims of male desire, their
sexuality is exploited to fulfill male desires.
5. Post feminism on sex and the
media
Women are proud of sexuality, celebrate
their own desires. Women can use their
sexuality to exploit males – desire is
weakening.
6. Example
Radical
Post feminist:
feminist :
women are
women
empowered
objectified &
as they are
sexuality is
in control
exploited
7. Government concerns
Young girls copying sexy dress
and behavior.
Marketing of skimpy clothes.
Make-up, sexualising young
girls.
“Using bodies not minds to
achieve status”
8. David Cameron believes that
sexually suggestive videos by the
likes of Rihanna and Lady GaGa are
leading to a “greater sexualisation of
childhood”. The government say
that children are exposed to
„inappropriate content‟. Parents
believe that these „sexy music
videos‟ are influencing the behavior
of boys towards girls.
9. Why does it matter?
This
then leads to social problems – teen
pregnancy, sexual abuse, prostitution,
rape etc.
10. …
Cameron primarily focuses on sexual content
in music videos after the industry’s negative
reaction to a report he commissioned from
Church Of England pressure group ‘Mothers
Union’ head Reg Bailey. The report, titled ‘Let
Children Be Children’, said: ”Concerns
focused on sexual and violent nature of song
lyrics; highly sexualised, verging on explicit,
dance routines; and the stereotyped gender
roles portrayed.
11. What will the government do?
Ifmusic industry bosses come to
an agreement with Cameron it
would mean that music videos
deemed ‘sexually suggestive’
would be brandished with an 18
certificate, meaning any
persons under the age of 18
purchasing it or viewing it would
technically be breaking the law
