IDEA Engineering Workshop Explained
1. Serious about innovation? Want to create
competitive advantage out of your ideas? Need to
ensure your leaders have the skills of the future
(today)? Then, we can help.
Read on to learn more.
2. DO YOU WANT PEOPLE WHO KNOW INNOVATION
OR PEOPLE WHO DO INNOVATION?
We know that future competitive advantage depends on your ability to harness the creative problem
solving of your people and applying new ideas and thinking to your challenges. This takes leaders who
both understand innovation as well as apply it in every situation.
It is not just us who are saying this. A survey by IBM of over 1,400 CEOs and business leaders
worldwide found that the ability to apply creative problem solving and dealing with complexity are the
two most needed skills to lead in the rapidly changing face of business today. In the same survey they
defined the business of tomorrow as one of constant change and where the organizations ability to “innovation
innovate will determine success or failure. distinguishes
This ability to harness innovation and rapidly create new ideas in the form of services, products, between a leader and
systems and business models is what we believe will be most needed in your leaders. The world of
business is about to go through dramatic changes. Being able to simply make analytical decisions and a follower.”
execute plans will not be sufficient. Your leaders will need to be able to lead the organization through
change, be comfortable with the chaotic and fast paced business cycles that are to come and develop -Steve Jobs
and advocate for the new ideas that produce new value.
We have been helping companies prepare leaders for just this kind of business environment by
improving innovation capabilities through our results oriented workshop. What we impart goes well
beyond simply teaching brainstorming skills and is a far cry from the theory-based with no application
trainings given by traditional consultants. In fact, what we teach will change the way your people work
all together.
3. OUR APPROACH
Our Design Driven Approach.
(or, the method to our madness)
I D E A engineering ™
We bring this mix of elements together in facilitated creative problem solving meetings that we call
InnovationMissions(™) as well as provide training to those who need to develop the new ideas your organization
needs. We use our innovation methodology called I.D.E.A. Engineering. which brings together the best of
foundation processes in Innovation like Osborn-Parnes CPS, PDCA, AcceleratedInnovation,ThinkX as well as
Design Thinking principles. The key steps in our method are what drive innovation at some of the most
recognized innovative companies like Herman Miller, Apple, Fellows, Google, Motorola and GE. This process
promotes collaboration and guides teams from discovering the roots of the problems right through
commercialization of solutions.

Within the four stages we have eight critical steps that build one to the other. Think of these as deliverables that help us push forward.
Our approach is based on truths we have discovered through real world trial and error. They help guide the way we apply I.D.E.A
Engineering and assure that your innovation efforts don’t fail. They challenge the way most organizations do business and are part of
the keys that make our approach work in the real world. Here are just a few of them:
•Rubber Band Effect - Sometimes we find we need to take a step backwards as we discover new things.
•Doing over planning - Planning sounds good but it depends on making assumptions. Doing is about going out and trying
something to learn first hand what works and what doesn’t. If you want to know how a solution might work prototype it and learn before
you invest in a complete roll out.
•Human Centric - Thinking more along the lines of anthropologists where observation leads to better insights and to empathy with
the consumer. Solutions are often found when we simple stop to observe what is going on and understand it from a users peerspective.
•Storytelling and visuals over spreadsheets - This means that numbers alone cannot tell the human side of the story. During
our sessions we collect visual data in the form of pictures and video so they better translate our learnings and conclusions into stories
that direct our thinking in more concrete and real ways.
•Radical Collaboration - Where possible we like to source ideas from beyond just those people on the team. This can mean
partners, non-related departments and even customers.
6. TRAINING IN OUR APPROACH
Applied I.D.E.A. Engineering™ is a 2 day immersion into our design driven
approach to innovation and collaborative creative problem solving and includes learning
the theory and applying it to an actual goal challenge or problem. In a two day session
we apply this training against a real world challenge your team is facing so that they get
real world experience with I.D.E.A. Engineering and the tips and techniques that make
innovation happen. In a two day session workshop and facilitation of an actual session
come together.
I.D.E.A. Engineering™ is an intensive 1 day workshop in the process and
techniques that lead to this design thinking approach. It is learn by doing, quick intense
and fun.
