In a tragedy many of the main characters die.
“Romeo & Juliet”
Introduction
Written in 1599,
Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy
written early in the career of
William Shakespeare about two
young lovers whose deaths Shakespear
ultimately unite their feuding
families. It was among
Shakespeare's most popular
plays during his lifetime and,
along with Hamlet, is one of his
most frequently performed
plays. Today, the title characters
are regarded as archetypal
young lovers.
Romeo and Juliet tells the
story of two young lovers
who fall deeply in love and
do everything
they can to be together.
Prologu
The Chorus setse the
                 up
  mood by telling the
 audience in the form of
a sonnet that there is a
 feud between two
 families in Verona, a
 town in Italy. Amidst the
 warring sides, two "star-
 cross'd lovers" will die
 for love of one another,
 and it is only their
 deaths that will bring
 peace to Verona.

                                          Summary

Long ago in the city of Verona, lived two noble families, the
Capulets and the Montagues. For as long as anyone could
remember, there was much hatred between the two families.
Romeo, the son of Montague, was the only one who wanted to
make peace.
Romeo reveals that he is in love with a woman named
Rosaline.
One day, Romeo heard there
was going to be a feast at the
 house of Capulet. He decided
to go, but in disguise so that no
one would know who he was.
 When Romeo arrived there, he
 looked around the room, and
caught sight of a girl so
beautiful that he could think of
 nothing else. When he found
 out that she was Juliet,
 Capulet's daughter, he was
stunned. Juliet also fell in love
with the young man. When she When Romeo and Juliet
meet, they fall in love and
heard that he was Romeo, the
had their first kiss behind the
only son of Montague, she curtain near the candles.
could hardly believe her Later, Juliet's mom takes her
 misfortune. "My only love away.
sprung from my only hate!" she
 said.
Later that night, Romeo
was walking past the
Capulets’ garden when he
suddenly stopped. "Can I
go forward when my love is
here?" He decided to climb
over the wall and meet
Juliet. Then he saw her
standing on the balcony.
Juliet had not seen him.
"Romeo, Romeo!" she said
to herself. "Why are you
Romeo? Refuse your
name and I'll no longer be
a Capulet". Romeo was
filled with joy.
The Balcony Scene

“Romeo, Romeo,
  Wherefore art thou
  Romeo?” Remember: Wherefore means
                           “Why”
Romeo and Juliet confessed their love to each other.
The next day, Romeo and Juliet are married by Friar
Lawrence; an event witnessed by Juliet’s Nurse and
Romeo’s loyal servant, Balthasar. They plan to meet
  in Juliet’s chambers that night.
While Romeo was coming back from the
secret wedding, he came across Tybalt,
Juliet's cousin, who had been arguing with
Romeo's friend Mercutio.
In the fight that followed, Tybalt killed
Mercutio and then fell dead from Romeo's
sword. Romeo had to escape from the city
of Verona.
Friar Lawrence informs Romeo that he has been
banished from Verona and will be killed if he stays.
The Friar suggests Romeo spend the night with
Juliet, then leave for Mantua in the morning. He tells
Romeo that he will attempt to settle the Capulet and
Montague dispute so Romeo can later return to a
united family. Romeo takes his advice, spending one
night with Juliet before fleeing Verona.
• Juliet’s mother, completely
  unaware of her daughter's
  secret marriage to Romeo,
  informs Juliet that she will
  marry a man named Paris
  in a few days.
• Juliet, outraged, refuses to
  comply.
• She asks Friar Lawrence
  for advice, insisting she
  would rather die than marry
  Paris. Fr. Lawrence gives
  Juliet a poison which will
  make her appear dead and
tells her to take it the night
  before the wedding. He
  promises to send word to
  Romeo - intending the two
  lovers be reunited.
Juliet drinks the poison and
everybody assumes that she is
dead — including Balthasar, who
immediately tells Romeo. Friar
Lawrence’s letter fails to reach
Romeo, so he assumes that his
wife is dead.
The next day, Juliet was found lifeless in her
bedroom. When Romeo heard the bad news,
he believed Juliet was really dead because
the priest’s letter had not reached him by an
  unfortunate accident.
He could not live without her. The
only thing he wanted was to die next
to Juliet. He rushes to Juliet’stomb
and, in deep grief, drinks a vial of
poison.
A few minutes later, Juliet woke up and
realised what had happened. She took Romeo’s
dagger and stabbed herself. When the true
story of Romeo and Juliet was made known,
their families decided to put an end to their
hatred.
Moments later, Juliet wakes to find
Romeo dead and kills herself due to grief.
Once the families discover what happened, they finally end
their bitter feud. Thus the youngsters' deaths bring the
families together. Romeo And Juliet is a true tragedy in the
literary sense because the families gather sufficient self-
knowledge to correct their behavior but not until it is too
            late to save the situation.

Fate Marriage Love
Fate  Romeo and Juliet are ―star-crossed‖—that is to say
that fate ontrols them). This sense of fate permeates
the play, and not just for the audience. The characters
also are quite aware of it: Romeo and Juliet constantly
         see omens.
 The mechanism of fate works in all of the events
         surrounding the lovers:
 The feud between their families (it is worth noting that
this hatred is never explained; rather, the reader must
accept it as an undeniable aspect of the world of the
         play);
 The tragic timing of Romeo’s suicide and Juliet’s
         awakening.
 These events are not mere coincidences, but rather
manifestations of fate that help bring about the
unavoidable outcome of the young lovers’ deaths.

It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers.

  • 11. Romeo • At the beginning of the play he is in love with a lady named Rosaline, but once he sees Juliet he falls in love with her and forgets about Rosaline. • Nothing else besides being with Juliet matters to Romeo, especially the family feud. • He will stop at nothing to be with her for eternity.

  • 14. Romeo and Juliet Summary Long ago in the city of Verona, lived two noble families, the Capulets and the Montagues. For as long as anyone could remember, there was much hatred between the two families. Romeo, the son of Montague, was the only one who wanted to make peace. Romeo reveals that he is in love with a woman named Rosaline.
  • 15. One day, Romeo heard there was going to be a feast at the house of Capulet. He decided to go, but in disguise so that no one would know who he was. When Romeo arrived there, he looked around the room, and caught sight of a girl so beautiful that he could think of nothing else. When he found out that she was Juliet, Capulet's daughter, he was stunned. Juliet also fell in love with the young man. "My only love away. sprung from my only hate!" she said.
  • 16. Later that night, Romeo was walking past the Capulets’ garden when he suddenly stopped. "Can I go forward when my love is here?" He decided to climb over the wall and meet Juliet. Then he saw her standing on the balcony. Juliet had not seen him. "Romeo, Romeo!" she said to herself. "Why are you Romeo? Refuse your name and I'll no longer be a Capulet". Romeo was filled with joy.
  • 17. The Balcony Scene “Romeo, Romeo, Wherefore art thou Romeo?” Remember: Wherefore means “Why”
  • 18. Romeo and Juliet confessed their love to each other.
  • 19. The next day, Romeo and Juliet are married by Friar Lawrence; an event witnessed by Juliet’s Nurse and Romeo’s loyal servant, Balthasar. They plan to meet in Juliet’s chambers that night.
  • 20. While Romeo was coming back from the secret wedding, he came across Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, who had been arguing with Romeo's friend Mercutio. In the fight that followed, Tybalt killed Mercutio and then fell dead from Romeo's sword. Romeo had to escape from the city of Verona.
  • 21. Friar Lawrence informs Romeo that he has been banished from Verona and will be killed if he stays. The Friar suggests Romeo spend the night with Juliet, then leave for Mantua in the morning. He tells Romeo that he will attempt to settle the Capulet and Montague dispute so Romeo can later return to a united family. Romeo takes his advice, spending one night with Juliet before fleeing Verona.
  • 22. • Juliet’s mother, completely unaware of her daughter's secret marriage to Romeo, informs Juliet that she will marry a man named Paris in a few days. • Juliet, outraged, refuses to comply. • She asks Friar Lawrence for advice, insisting she would rather die than marry Paris. Fr. Lawrence gives Juliet a poison which will make her appear dead and tells her to take it the night before the wedding. He promises to send word to Romeo - intending the two lovers be reunited.
  • 23.
  • 24. Juliet drinks the poison and everybody assumes that she is dead — including Balthasar, who immediately tells Romeo. Friar Lawrence’s letter fails to reach Romeo, so he assumes that his wife is dead.
  • 25. The next day, Juliet was found lifeless in her bedroom. When Romeo heard the bad news, he believed Juliet was really dead because the priest’s letter had not reached him by an unfortunate accident.
  • 26. He could not live without her. The only thing he wanted was to die next to Juliet. He rushes to Juliet’stomb and, in deep grief, drinks a vial of poison.
  • 27. A few minutes later, Juliet woke up and realised what had happened. She took Romeo’s dagger and stabbed herself. When the true story of Romeo and Juliet was made known, their families decided to put an end to their hatred.
  • 28. Moments later, Juliet wakes to find Romeo dead and kills herself due to grief.
  • 29. Once the families discover what happened, they finally end their bitter feud. Thus the youngsters' deaths bring the families together. Romeo And Juliet is a true tragedy in the literary sense because the families gather sufficient self- knowledge to correct their behavior but not until it is too late to save the situation. • 32. Fate  Romeo and Juliet are ―star-crossed‖—that is to say that fate ontrols them). This sense of fate permeates the play, and not just for the audience. The characters also are quite aware of it: Romeo and Juliet constantly see omens.  The mechanism of fate works in all of the events surrounding the lovers:  The feud between their families (it is worth noting that this hatred is never explained; rather, the reader must accept it as an undeniable aspect of the world of the play);  The tragic timing of Romeo’s suicide and Juliet’s awakening.  These events are not mere coincidences, but rather manifestations of fate that help bring about the unavoidable outcome of the young lovers’ deaths.
