16. Burden of neonatal mortality The greatest burden of global neonatal deaths occurs in South East Asia. India alone contributes 21% of the global burden. 90% of births occur in developing countries. 99% of neonatal deaths occur in developing countries, notably Sub-Saharan Africa (21%) and South East Asia (37%). The NMR is higher in sub-Saharan Africa, but South East Asia contributes a higher proportion of total neonatal deaths due to higher population and birth rates.
