PAST SIMPLE
Use the Simple Past to express the idea that an action started and finished at a specific time in the past.
Sometimes, the speaker may not actually mention the specific time, but they do have one specific time in
mind.
Examples:
*I saw a movie yesterday.
* I didn't see a play yesterday.
*Last year, I traveled to Japan.
*Last year, I didn't travel to Korea.
*Did you have dinner last night?
*She washed her car.
* He didn't wash his car.
Kinds of Verbs in Past Simple
Verb To be:
This Verb is totally independent of others because it has its own structure and use in Simple Past
Tense.

Irregular Verbs

4. Negative Statements:
When you use negative statements in Past Simple it is necessary to use an auxiliary DID + NOT when
you use regular and irregular verbs and the principal verb in the infinitive way but if you use verbs To
Be it is not necessary to use it, you just write NOT.
Example:
Verb To Be:
Rip was confused. ………….. Rip was not (wasn’t) confused.
The children were friendly. ………… The children were not (weren’t) friendly.
Irregular verbs:
Rip went to the Catskills Mountains. ……….. Rip did not (didn’t) go to the Catskills Mountains.
Regular Verbs:
Ichabod arrived to Van Tassel’s house. …….. Ichabod did not (didn’t) arrive to Van Tassel’s house.

Questions
In Past Simple you use auxiliary DID to make questions when you use regular and irregular verbs. But if
you use Verb To Be it is not necessary to use auxiliary you just need to organize the sentence.
