PAST SIMPLE
Use the Simple Past to express the idea that an action started and finished at a specific time in the past.
Sometimes, the speaker may not actually mention the specific time, but they do have one specific time in
mind.
Examples:
*I saw a movie yesterday.
* I didn't see a play yesterday.
*Last year, I traveled to Japan.
*Last year, I didn't travel to Korea.
*Did you have dinner last night?
*She washed her car.
* He didn't wash his car.
Kinds of Verbs in Past Simple
 Verb To be:
This Verb is totally independent of others because it has its own structure and use in Simple Past
Tense.

1. Rewrite the following sentences in Simple Past by using Verb To Be in your
folder.
0. Rip Van Winkle is a simple, kind man: Rip Van Winkle was a simple, kind man.
1. People in the Village are friendly with him
2. The book is about two different stories
3. His wife is unhappy
4. Children in the village are glad to play with Rip
5. Rip Van Winkle is lazy.
* Add two more sentences in Simple Past and using verb to be.
 Regular Verbs:
Most of the verbs end in ED when you use them in Past Simple, so it’s important to know how to use
them
Present Simple Past Simple
Study (ends with Y after a consonant) Studied (you change Y for an i.)
Play (ends in Y after a vowel) Played (you don’t change Y.)
Stop ( Stopped (you add another consonant before ED.)
Like (ends already in E) Liked (you just add D.)
Talk (others) Talked (You add ED)

 Irregular Verbs
These verbs are the ones that change their form when they are used in Past Simple but there are some
of them that don’t change. Here you can find some of the Verbs that we are going to use in Sixth
Grade.

 Negative Statements:
When you use negative statements in Past Simple it is necessary to use an auxiliary DID + NOT when
you use regular and irregular verbs and the principal verb in the infinitive way but if you use verbs To
Be it is not necessary to use it, you just write NOT.
Example:
Verb To Be:
Rip was confused. ………….. Rip was not (wasn’t) confused.
The children were friendly. ………… The children were not (weren’t) friendly.
Irregular verbs:
Rip went to the Catskills Mountains. ……….. Rip did not (didn’t) go to the Catskills Mountains.
Regular Verbs:
Ichabod arrived to Van Tassel’s house. …….. Ichabod did not (didn’t) arrive to Van Tassel’s house.

sentences in Past Simple underline them using a red color, then write their

 Questions
In Past Simple you use auxiliary DID to make questions when you use regular and irregular verbs. But if
you use Verb To Be it is not necessary to use auxiliary you just need to organize the sentence.
Examples
Verb To Be:
Was Rip a friendly and Kind person?
Irregular Verbs:
Did Rip go to the mountains?
Regular Verbs:
Did he like talking and drink in the Inn?

  • 4.  Negative Statements: When you use negative statements in Past Simple it is necessary to use an auxiliary DID + NOT when you use regular and irregular verbs and the principal verb in the infinitive way but if you use verbs To Be it is not necessary to use it, you just write NOT. Example: Verb To Be: Rip was confused. ………….. Rip was not (wasn’t) confused. The children were friendly. ………… The children were not (weren’t) friendly. Irregular verbs: Rip went to the Catskills Mountains. ……….. Rip did not (didn’t) go to the Catskills Mountains. Regular Verbs: Ichabod arrived to Van Tassel’s house. …….. Ichabod did not (didn’t) arrive to Van Tassel’s house. Practice: 6. Open your book on pages 16 and 17, chapter two “A Strange Afternoon” find 5 sentences in Past Simple underline them using a red color, then write their negative sentence in the following space. a. _______________________________________________________________________ b. _______________________________________________________________________ c. _______________________________________________________________________ d. _______________________________________________________________________ e. _______________________________________________________________________ f. _______________________________________________________________________ 7. But if you use Verb To Be it is not necessary to use auxiliary you just need to organize the sentence. Examples Verb To Be: Was Rip a friendly and Kind person? Irregular Verbs: Did Rip go to the mountains? Regular Verbs: Did he like talking and drink in the Inn?
